Dear Parents, Alumni, and Friends, 

I am truly honored to be a part of the Bishop O’Connell community at such an exciting 

time. I am inspired by the legacy left by the dedicated men and women of our six 

founding parishes, who sought an option of Catholic education for their children and 

parishioners more than fifty years ago. This rich history compels us to work even 

harder toward ensuring a bright future for generations of “Knights” to come. 

In my many conversations over the past four months with our alumni community, 

I am reminded that school spirit has never been something taken lightly at DJO! This 

same school spirit experienced by our alumni is alive and well today in the hallways of 

O’Connell and in the hearts of over 1,200 young men and women from over 80 schools 

across two states and the District of Columbia who make up our current student body. 

In these challenging times, it is more important than ever for parents to choose 

Catholic education for their child. Pope John Paul II speaks of community as the heart 

of all Catholic education. At O’Connell, students learn and understand the value of 

community as they experience the unique environment and educational programs that 

are the hallmarks of Bishop O’Connell. As Dr. Vorbach and I make admissions visits 

to local elementary schools, we listen in awe to our own students’ narratives on what 

makes Bishop O’Connell special. Over and over we hear the words that speak to our 

school spirit, sense of community, opportunities for spiritual growth, and challenging 

curriculum. With much emphasis they proclaim, “Our teachers really care; they will go 

out of their way to help you be successful.” 

President’s 

Message 

To ensure that this special gift of an O’Connell education continues to thrive, we are 

engaged in an intense effort to identify the current and future needs of our students. 

Our goal is to take an in-depth look at how best to guarantee the continuing excellence 

of O’Connell and build a vision based on the best of who we are and what we aspire to 

become. We are closely examining our facility needs focused on building renovations 

and repairs (including already planned green initiatives), technology integration in 

the curriculum, science lab refurbishments, and theater and auditorium needs. At the 

same time we are in the final design phase of our Athletic Fields Renovation Project, 

which is slated to begin this school year. In reality, all of these projects are considered 

top priorities, though our partnership with Marymount University in the Athletic 

Fields Renovation Project has help launch this particular project as the next major 

improvement designed to unequivocally position Bishop O’Connell as the best option 

for Catholic education in the Washington metropolitan area. 

I am looking forward to working closely with our community to build on the 53-year 

tradition of service, spirit, and excellence that has defined Bishop O’Connell High School.

Dear Parents, Alumni, and Friends, 

These are exciting times at Bishop Denis J. O’Connell High School. As parents and fellow 

alumni of this fine school, you share with me a strong belief in the values of Catholic 

education and the qualities that Bishop O’Connell imparts on its students. Despite the tough 

economic period through which we have now emerged, Bishop O’Connell has charted a 

course for growth and improvements that will enhance our academic, athletic and other 

extra-curricular programs. 

Chairman’s 

Message 

We have achieved a number of milestones during the past school year, including, most importantly, 

celebrating our 50th commencement exercise. We have also managed to continue 

to set records for our fundraising efforts, including more than $440,000 for our Annual 

Fund giving, an order of magnitude increase from just six years ago. We also set a record for 

our leadership giving to our President’s Club, with a 30 percent increase in membership. All 

told, among our Advancement efforts and fundraising by our various boosters clubs, Bishop 

O’Connell is raising over $1 million annually toward our needs! 

But our work has only just begun. The coming year will be filled with excitement. First, we 

welcome our new president, Kathleen Ryan Prebble, who assumed her duties on July 1. 

Katy comes to us after a tremendous eight-year record of achievement with Mount de Sales 

Academy in Macon, Georgia. She has nearly 30 years experience as a teacher and school 

administrator, all in Catholic education. After four years of planning, we are excited to begin 

our athletic complex renovation, a multi-year three-phase campaign which is described in 

greater detail elsewhere in this report. Additionally, we will be developing and implementing 

several significant new academic initiatives, including our Global Initiative, academic partnerships 

with a local university, plans for technology additions to our classrooms, renovation 

of our science labs, and the continued upgrade and greening of our physical plant. 

The challenges facing Catholic education in the 21st century are daunting. You are an 

integral part of our ability to meet these challenges. We began the 2010-11 school year with 

an enrollment of more than 1,200 students and aggressive marketing plans to increase that 

enrollment over time. We remain committed to our mission, which is to provide students 

an education rooted in the life of Christ and to foster the pursuit of excellence in the whole 

person, and to meet our continuing objective of offering the finest Catholic educational 

experience in the country. And we need your continued support. 

The Board of Governors is keenly aware of our need to remain focused on long-term strategic 

planning and our duty for sound fiscal management of our programs and facilities. We 

cannot achieve this without you—our current families, our alumni, and all of the greater 

DJO community. 

We hope that when you read our President’s Report, you will be excited by the accomplishments 

and the momentum that you feel arising from this spirit-filled community. And we 

hope you will ask yourself what you can do to help us achieve our objectives in this year and 

the years to come. The Bishop O’Connell community has always been known for its heart 

and its giving nature. Now more than ever we hope that we can count on you to join us, 

because big things are happening on Little Falls Road every day.

Athletic Fields Renovation 

Becoming a Reality 

Bishop O’Connell is concluding the design 

phase of the long awaited renovation of its 

outdoor athletic complex. The renovation 

is the first part of a series of initiatives that 

the school is launching to build on our 

53-year tradition of excellence in serving 

our students and our community. It is 

envisioned that the renovated fields will 

benefit students and athletic teams from 

Bishop O’Connell, nearby Marymount 

University, and the Arlington community. 

Project Summary: 

Three Phase 

Renovation Plan 

The project, which is slated to start during 

this school year, contemplates a three 

phase renovation of the O’Connell rectangular 

stadium field to be completed within 

three years. 

◗ ◗Phase One will include relocation of 

the O’Connell rectangular field, addition 

of athletic turf and installation of 

a new six-lane competitive track, new 

bleachers and press box. 

◗ ◗Phase Two includes a reorienting and 

improvement of the baseball field, and 

the addition of field lights, subject 

to the Arlington County permitting 

process. 

◗◗A final Phase Three, in partnership 

with Arlington County Parks and 

Recreation, will include improvement 

of the fields located at Tuckahoe Park, 

to include a new softball field and athletic 

turf for the park. This phase will 

occur after additional discussions with 

Arlington Parks and Recreation. 

Installation of Lights 

A permit request has been filed for the installation 

of lights on the Bishop O’Connell 

property. Lights will be installed subject to 

approval by the Arlington County Board. 

Installation of athletic turf and lights is 

expected to improve safety for athletes 

and students, increase scheduling flexibility, 

improve storm water drainage, and 

provide substantial additional athletic 

field access for practices and games for 

Bishop O’Connell and future Marymount 

University teams, and potentially other 

Arlington community programs. 

Lights would provide on average of one 

additional game slot per day for the partner 

schools or community athletic leagues 

and/or additional practice slots. Bishop 

O’Connell proposes to make the track 

and other facilities available to the local 

community when not scheduled for use by 

other teams or activities. 

How You Can Help 

Many individuals and groups continue to 

help advance this project by raising awareness 

of and support for the much needed 

redesign and revitalization of the DJO 

athletic complex. Major commitments and 

contributions are needed to help move 

to the ground-breaking of this exciting 

project.

Green Initiatives Gain 

Momentum 

Last April, Bishop O’Connell officially 

launched the Going Green Initiative by 

identifying the following five “green” 

priorities for the school: light fixture 

replacement and retrofit; 

water conservation and 

replacement; solar panels; 

heating, ventilation 

and air conditioning; 

and window replacements. 

Last summer 

O’Connell successfully 

completed the first initiative, 

of these five—the 

light fixture replacement and 

retrofit project. These new lamps not only 

save energy but produce a brighter, better 

environment for the 1,220 students in our 

community. 

The Realtors, Builders & Lenders for 

O’Connell group (RBL) spearheaded this 

important endeavor. They continue to 

support the school’s efforts and are excited 

about undertaking the next project of these 

five initiatives. The RBL group is also in the 

process of planning new networking opportunities 

for the 2010‐11 school year. 

Join the Bishop O’Connell Affinity Program 

The newly formed Affinity Program initiated 

through the RBL movement is a growing 

program that provides an opportunity to 

bring together businesses and customers in 

support of Bishop O’Connell. Businesses enrolling 

in this program pledge to contribute 

a portion of the patronage from the Bishop 

O’Connell community. In return, they will 

have their support publicized in Bishop 

O’Connell publications and on the Web site. 

Customers will know that their purchases 

of goods and services from these businesses 

support Bishop O’Connell. In good and 

bad economic times, the Affinity Program 

provides the unique opportunity for the 

community to share a portion of its fortune 

with Bishop O’Connell. 

Affinity eNews 

In conjunction with the Affinity program, 

Advancement has launched an electronic 

newsletter alert this year—the Affinity 

eNews. This brief news alert is sent 

monthly in an effort to feature and thank 

one business affinity partner in each issue.

Scholarship, Spirit, Service 

The Year in 

REview 

2009–2010 

As a college preparatory high school, 

we continue to develop our academic 

programs around required courses that 

aim to achieve desired learning goals for 

each student. In pursuing these goals, 

our students learn skills they will use 

all their lives: how to seize upon what is 

most important in what they read, how to 

solve a problem, how to listen to others, 

how to frame a persuasive argument, how 

to organize their time, how to provide 

services for others and how to walk in the 

footsteps of Christ. 

New Assistant Principal 

for Academics 

In July 2009, Sister Catherine Hill, I.H.M. 

took the reigns as Bishop O’Connell’s 

newest assistant principal for academics. 

Valedictorian of the class of 1966, Sister 

Catherine has also chaired and taught 

in the science department for several 

years. According to Sister Catherine, 

this position allows her to help students 

prepare themselves for college and life 

beyond O’Connell. “High school is a time 

for our students to pick up many skills and 

learn many of the habits that they need in 

order to be “good, productive members of 

society, especially ones who express our 

faith, and just make the world a better 

place by being in it.” 

National Merit 

Recognition 

Congratulations to the members of the 

class of 2010 who were recognized by 

the 2010 National Merit Scholarship 

program. Erin McDonough was named 

as a Semifinalist, and 15 classmates were 

recognized as Commended Students: 

Claire Arnos, Meghan Aubry, Kristin 

Bowers, Michael Conrad, Ashley Fidler, 

Jacqueline Filzen, Rachel Frison, 

Michael Fulcher, Stephanie Langan,

Students Excel at 

Speech and Essay 

Contests 

Through the encouragement and mentoring 

of English department faculty member 

Mary Lou Wentzel, O’Connell students 

actively participated in local essay and 

oratorical contests during the 2009-2010 

school year. Nine O’Connell students 

represented the Commonwealth of Virginia 

at a national level competition. Erin 

McDonough won first place in the national 

essay contest for the Society of Professional 

Journalists, and Kristin Bowers won the 

National Sons of the American Revolution 

Oratorical Contest. 

Students Visit Sister 

School in France 

Twelve O’Connell French students, along 

with their French teacher, Mrs. Joan 

McCarty, traveled to France in September 

2009 to visit our sister high school 

in Reims. This is the fourth year in a row 

that O’Connell has participated in this exchange. 

Both students and teacher stayed 

with host families and attended classes 

in the small, Catholic high school of Jean 

XXIII. The students toured Reims, visited 

the Cathedral that Joan of Arc visited, 

saw the Basilica where the first Christian 

king of France was baptized (Clovis), 

tasted exquisite cuisine, saw champagne 

caves. During a one day trip to Paris, the 

group visited the French “White House” 

(l’Elysée), the National Assembly, and 

of course, other memorable sites (Eiffel 

Tower, Notre Dame Cathedral). For the 

students and teacher alike, this trip was 

considered “life-transforming.” 

O’Connell Completes 

Year-long Self Study 

From November 17 to November 19, 2009 

Bishop O’Connell hosted a three-person 

Quality Assurance Review (QAR) team 

from the Southern Association of Colleges 

and Schools/Council on Accreditation and 

School Improvement (SACS-CASI, a division 

of AdvancEd). The visit was part of a 

process the school follows in seeking reaccreditation 

every five years. It was a very 

successful visit as the team commended the

school for, among other things, the strong 

sense of community that permeates day-today 

operations, the way in which the vision 

of the school is known and shared by all 

stakeholders, the dedication of the teachers 

to the school and the students, and for 

prudent financial management. 

A year-long self study was conducted 

within the school before the visit. Skillfully 

led by English Department Chair 

Diane Cerniglia, the study caused research 

and reflection by all faculty and staff in the 

following areas:

In addition to these seven, an eighth 

standard on “Catholic Identity” provided 

by the Diocese was an important and equal 

component of the study. 

O’Connell Students 

Light Up the Stage 

The theater department kicked off the 

year with a holiday classic, Irving Berlin’s 

“White Christmas,” which featured the 

musical and dancing talents of a large crosssection 

of our student population. Following 

on the heels of this production, faculty 

members and students joined together 

for the light and fun-filled performance of 

“WDJO’s 1939 Christmas Radio Program,” a 

night of Christmas one-act plays and singing 

in a radio station format of the 1930’s. 

Then in March, the school auditorium was 

transformed into an enchanted forest, as 

Bishop O’Connell presented the spring 

musical, “Into the Woods.” 

New Athletic 

Training Room 

A new light-filled training room greeted 

our student athletes at the beginning of 

the 2009–2010 school year. The facility 

features five custom treatment tables, a 

two-person taping station, a new extremity 

whirlpool, and ample cabinetry for 

all storage needs. The room also houses 

new rehabilitation equipment, including 

electrical stimulation and ultrasound 

units, and a wall-mounted exercise device. 

“This new facility allows us to take care of 

our student athletes much more efficiently 

and effectively,” says Mr. Tillson, head 

athletic trainer at O’Connell for more than 

30 years. 

The training room project was made 

possible by intensive fundraising efforts 

by the O’Connell Athletic Boosters. According 

to Booster’s president, Mrs. Beth 

Carty, this parent-run organization exists 

to serve all sports teams. “This was a 

natural project for us to undertake,” says 

Mrs. Carty. “All athletes at O’Connell will 

be positively impacted by this incredible 

improvement.” 

Two Recent Grads Ordained in Arlington 

Bishop O’Connell High School congratulates two alumni who were recently 

ordained to the priesthood on June 12, 2010. Fr. Ed Bresnahan ’99 (far right in 

photo), and Fr. Jason Weber ’00 (center in photo) both took their first steps as 

Arlington’s newest shepherds at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More in a Mass 

celebrated by Bishop Loverde. 

Three-peat for Girls 

Cross Country 

Soggy conditions and steady rain did not 

prevent the girls cross country team from 

claiming their third straight Virginia 

Independent Schools (VIS) championship 

at Woodberry Forest. This win came two 

weeks after the girls claimed the Washington 

Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) 

championship also for the third year in 

a row. O’Connell dominated the WCAC 

meet, with runners finishing in first, 

second, fifth, sixth and seventh. These 

titles crowned a winning season for the 

Lady Knights, who also won the Arlington 

County Championship and claimed 

the Cross Country Triple Crown for the 

lowest combined varsity team results at 

Great Meadow, Oatlands and Octoberfest 

Invitationals earlier in the year.

Boys Basketball 

Claims Fifth State Title 

in Nine Years 

The O’Connell boys basketball team completed 

an incredible stretch of five games in 

five days to claim the 2010 Division 1 Virginia 

Independent Schools (VIS)title. According 

to Coach Joe Wootten, the Knights 

run to the state title was a total team effort 

with ten different team members playing in 

the championship game alone. 

Softball Accolades 

The varsity softball team finished an 

outstanding season with a 27-1 record, 

claiming the Virginia Independent Schools 

(VIS) state championship for the eighth 

consecutive season and the WCAC title for 

the seventh time. Coach Tommy Orndorff, 

who has compiled an amazing record 

of 529 wins vs. 62 loses at O’Connell, 

was named in November 2009 to the 

Greater Washington Fastpitch Softball 

Commission’s Hall of Fame. In his 36 years 

at Bishop O’Connell, his teams have won 

14 out of 15 VIS State championships and 

he has twice been named Washington Post 

“Coach of the Year.” 

Athletic Director 

Named to Arlington 

Sports Hall of Fame 

O’Connell’s long-time athletic director 

Darrell Snyder was recognized for his 

contribution to youth sports in our area by 

being inducted into the Arlington Sports 

Hall of Fame. Darrell Snyder has been 

involved in O’Connell sports since 1974, 

first as head football coach, and then in 

1980 as athletic director and also golf team 

coach. He has amassed impressive winning 

records for the teams he has coached, and 

has been recognized as WCAC Coach of 

the Year in 1994 and 2000, and Virginia 

Independent Schools Coach of the Year in 

1976, 1979, 1981 and 1994. The Better Sports 

Club of Arlington named him Sportsman of 

the Year in 1992 and Arlington Coach of the 

Year in 1995. 

Crew Team Rows 

at Nationals 

Bishop O’Connell’s rowing team had three 

boats participating in Scholastic Rowing 

Association of America (SRAA) Nationals 

in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. over Memorial 

Day weekend. The Men’s Varsity Four 

boat placed fifth in the Commonwealth of 

Virginia to qualify for the national competition, 

where they faced off against some 

of the top teams in the country. O’Connell 

finished third in their first heat in Saratoga 

Springs, good enough to qualify 

them for the Men’s Varsity Repechage, 

where they beat their previous time. 

The O’Connell Men’s Junior Eight boat 

and the Women’s Junior Eight were also 

granted spots at the national competition 

as a result of their successful performances 

at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta in 

Philadelphia earlier this year. 

A Jam-Packed Year for 

the Chaplain’s Office 

Each year the Chaplain’s Office complements 

the mission of Bishop O’Connell 

High School, striving to bring the grace and 

peace of Christ to the life of each student— 

to assist young people in the challenging 

task of remaining faithful to their Baptismal 

calling and their Christian identity. While 

it is impossible to quantify the results of 

any spiritual endeavor, it is helpful, at year’s 

end, to look back and see what goodness 

God has offered to these students through 

the efforts of so many dedicated souls. 

Senior overnight retreats were held at 

Mount Zion retreat center, a mountainside 

setting about twenty miles south of Front 

Royal in November and December. The 

theme for the retreats was “Who are you and 

where are you going” With time for prayer, 

discussion, Mass, confession, and quiet 

reflection, dozens of faculty worked together 

to help prepare our seniors for the spiritual 

challenges they will face in college. 

An in-house retreat day was held in May 

for all underclassmen. Students met for 

a combined day of recollection, which 

offered confession, Mass, small-group discussion 

time, and an inspirational talk by 

former NFL wide-receiver Chris Horn. 

As always, the Chaplain’s office continued 

its regular activities: offering confession 

and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament 

two full days each week; offering Mass 

each day for students and faculty; leading 

the students to Washington D.C. in January 

for the annual March for Life; preparing 

new converts for reception of the sacraments; 

welcoming pastors from around 

the Diocese for Mass and lunch with their 

students; offering the ever-popular peanut 

butter and jelly sandwiches each day in 

the chapel coffeehouse; and striving to 

maintain a presence at all school events to 

remind students of the continuous presence 

of God in their lives. 

Students and community members can also 

listen to and download weekly podcasts by 

Father Hudgins on the Chaplain’s Office 

page of the school Web site. 

Soup Drive Fills Shelves 

at Christ House 

For more than thirty years, O’Connell 

students have been collecting soup cans to 

support Catholic Charities outreach efforts 

in our community. During two weeks in 

the fall semester, students collected cans 

of hearty soup and delivered them to their

Virgin Mary, but we are also part of an annual 

rededication ceremony for the Sisters, 

Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary 

(I.H.M) who live and work among us. 

homeroom, where they competed against 

other classrooms for prizes and bragging 

rights. At the end of the week, the students 

formed a Living Rosary on the football field 

where they prayed for those who would 

ultimately benefit from their efforts. With 

the last of the cans loaded onto the truck, 

student representatives traveled to Christ 

House in Alexandria where they were 

able to fill their shelves to an overflowing 

capacity—more than 8,000 cans were 

counted in the end. 

The Gift of Life 

Bishop O’Connell High School once again 

participated in a life-saving community 

service by hosting an Inova blood drive. 

Because of the work of the members of 

the O’Connell Health Services Club, 52 

potential donors stepped forward including 

students, faculty, and staff. On the day 

of the drive, seniors in the club registered 

and assisted donors. This year was the first 

time Bishop O’Connell allowed 16-yearolds 

(with parental consent) to donate 

blood, and the response was overwhelming. 

In the end, more than one-third of 

the donors were 16. Because of the hard 

work of many, O’Connell was able to meet 

its donation goal. O’Connell guidance 

counselor, Kathy Black, was moved by 

the response from the school community. 

“Having received blood to save my own 

life, our family knows personally the 

gratitude felt by those who are impacted 

by blood donations,” she said. 

Rededication for 

Sisters of the I.H.M. 

Every year on the feast of the Immaculate 

Conception, the O’Connell school community 

takes part in a special Mass and 

celebration. Not only do we come together 

to celebrate the feast day of the Blessed 

On December 8, all Sisters of I.H.M., 

wherever they may be missioned, profess a 

devotional renewal of their vows of chastity, 

poverty and obedience during Mass. This 

renewal is a public declaration of the Sister’s 

total consecration of her life to God through 

the Church in joyful service to God’s people. 

This re-commitment by each Sister witnesses 

to the universal call to holiness that 

each baptized person has in the vocation 

that she or he is called to by God. Here at 

O’Connell the devotional renewal of vows by 

the Sisters took place within the devotional 

renewal of the baptismal promises by each 

member of the Mass assembly. 

O’Connell Community 

Supports Haiti Relief 

Efforts 

On Tuesday, January 19, the school community 

took up a special collection to 

support earthquake victims in Haiti. 

Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of 

our students, teachers, staff members and 

parents, Bishop O’Connell is able to write a 

check for $10,000 to Medical Missionaries 

to make a direct and immediate impact on 

emergency relief efforts. 

Medical Missionaries is a non-profit on 

the ground in Haiti with more than ten 

years of experience there. Our Chaplain, 

Rev. James Hudgins spent time in 

Haiti in 2004-2005, and has continued to 

be in contact with them over the years. 

In addition to this financial support, 

O’Connell students provided extra hands 

at the local Medical Missionaries warehouse, 

where they supported preparations 

and packing efforts for the medical and 

surgical teams bound for Haiti. 

Superdance Success 

Bishop O’Connell held its 35th annual 

Superdance to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis 

Foundation on Saturday, March 13, 2010 

from noon until midnight. The students 

danced the afternoon and night away to 

some great local bands and talented DJs, 

while raising awareness and funds to find 

a cure for this disease. In the end, over 

$115,000 was raised. 

Superdance has become more than just a 

student event. Approximately 50 alumni 

stopped by the dance for a visit and to support 

our students’ efforts, and another 200 

or more attended the downtown Washington, 

DC alumni mixer, where over $2,000 

was raised for the cause. 

“Be Brave and Shave” 

The newly-formed Teens Against Cancer 

Club partnered with the community outreach 

“Heroes Against Childhood Cancer” 

to sponsor the first-ever O’Connell “Be 

Brave and Shave” event, where more than 

15 brave participants shaved their heads, 

and an additional four females cut their 

hair to donate to Locks of Love. Alumna 

Grace Abi-Najm Shea ’93 was a driving 

force behind alumni involvement in this 

event, getting friends and family members 

to participate and donating her own hair 

in the process. For most of the participants, 

“Be Brave and Shave” was a way 

that they could honor a loved one or good 

friend, and in the end, more than $7,000 

was raised for this worthwhile cause.

Class of 1970 

The class of 1970 held their 40-year 

reunion on June 11–12, 2010. On Friday, 

June 11, the 1970 O’Connell alums headed 

out to the Penderbrook Golf Club for a 

relaxing day of golf and camaraderie. 

On Saturday, June 12, the class of 1970 

held an evening of dinner and dancing in 

the O’Connell Cafeteria. An impressive 

164 graduates came back to celebrate 

with their fellow classmates. The class 

of 1970 also raised over $15,000 in gifts 

and pledges to the Annual Fund. The 

Yorkshires provided the entertainment 

that evening. Band members and 

O’Connell grads Paul Kotapish, Tim 

Wynne and Dennis Holland were joined 

by Grammy-nominated band mates Bud 

Harner (Langley High School) and Johnny 

Moto (McLean High School) to keep the 

party going strong!

Class of 1974 

The class of 1974 held an impromptu 

reunion on August 11 at Brion’s Grille 

(owned by Brion Sumser , ’74) Despite 

being a last minute event, about 15 

people were in attendance and all 

had a good time. Brion’s staff was 

very accommodating and the casual 

atmosphere made it easy to chat with 

everyone who attended.

Class of 1990 

The class of 1990 held their 20 year 

reunion on September 24-25. On Saturday, 

September 25, members of the class of 

1990 came back to O’Connell for a cookout 

and tour of the school. Saturday night, the 

group got together for a formal event at 

the Ritz-Carlton in Pentagon City.

Kate Yanchulis ’07 

Kate Yanchulis is 

currently a senior 

at University of 

Maryland majoring 

in Journalism and 

American Studies. 

She will be graduating 

in December of 

2010. Kate currently 

writes for the 

school paper, The 

Diamondback, as 

a sports writer, and was recently named 

a Philip Merrill Presidential Scholar for 

2010-2011,as a top rising senior in the College 

of Journalism. 

This past summer, Kate was accepted 

to the National Journalism Fellowship, 

News21. This program is funded by the 

John S. and James L. Knight Foundation 

and the Carnegie Corporation as 

part of the Carnegie-Knight Initiative 

on the Future of Journalism Education. 

News21 (which stands for news in the 21st 

century) is a highly-competitive summer 

newsroom program held at eight top journalism 

schools. Each summer, 10 to 12 students 

receive fellowships at each school 

to do in-depth reporting on a special topic 

and produce multimedia news stories. 

Kate was one of ten students from around 

the country selected to participate in 

the University of Maryland study. The 

University of Maryland group focused 

their project on the Chesapeake Bay. They 

participated in investigative reporting of 

the politics of pollution in the area. 

The project consisted of two major components. 

The first was to test the water 

quality of the tributaries of the Chesapeake 

Bay. This included spots along the 

Potomac, Severn and Anacostia Rivers. 

What they discovered was truly mind 

blowing! Three of their tested spots were 

dirtier than the sample dirty toilet water 

they had collected! 

The second part of Kate’s project was a 

report on the farming industry near the 

Chesapeake Bay. Every farmer is required 

to have a pollution permit in the state of 

Maryland, but many can’t get one due to 

the long waiting list. For some farmers this 

means that they are not able to carry out 

their work in a completely legal manner. 

Kate’s research with News21 is just the 

beginning. More than $6 billion has been 

invested in the bay, yet much of the area 

remains in worse condition than it did at 

the beginning of clean up in 1983.

Jacqueline St. Joan ’63 

Jacqueline St. Joan (Schaeffer) is an 

award-winning poet and travel writer, 

teacher and lawyer. This October, she is 

releasing her first novel. She is co-editor of 

Beyond Portia: Women, Law, and Literature 

in the United States (Northeastern University 

Press). She has worked as an advocate 

against domestic violence, county judge, 

law professor and a child and human 

rights advocate in a wide variety of both 

public and private settings. Jackie’s 

writings have appeared in a number 

of publications including The Denver 

Quarterly and Harvard Women’s Law 

Journal. She has also won a number of 

writing awards from various institutions 

including the Rocky Mountain Women’s 

Institute, the University of Colorado 

and the Denver Press Club. 

Her first novel 

My Sisters Made of Light 

was released on Oct. 15, 

2010. The book is based 

on true stories of women 

in Pakistan, though names 

and locations have been 

changed to protect the brave women 

involved. Following her travels in Pakistan, 

she became the Public Education Chair 

of the Asian American Network Against 

Abuse of Human Rights, a non-governmental 

organization (NGO) in the U.S. that 

works to support Pakistani efforts to end 

human rights violations. Half of the proceeds 

from her book sales will be donated 

to SOIL which is a grass roots organization 

based in Pakistan. The proceeds will be 

used to pay for the construction of a safe 

shelter for abused women and children. 

Jackie currently teaches a course entitled 

Women & the Law at Metropolitan State 

College of Denver. My Sisters Made of 

Light actually came out of a course that 

she was teaching at the school in 2002. 

The course, entitled Women Writing About 

the World After September 11th, allowed 

Jackie the opportunity to befriend a 

Pakistani teacher based in the U.S. who 

served as inspiration for the novel. For

Burnett, Jr. in 1982. Their first son, Bryant, 

is working at Best Buy in Fredericksburg, 

Va. Their second son, Patrick, graduated 

from George Mason University with a 

degree in Information Technology/Security 

in 2008 and is presently living in Fairfax 

and working at IBM in Baltimore. Their 

third child graduated from Marymount 

University in May 2009 with a Liberal 

Studies degree and a licensure to teach 

PreK-6th grade. Their youngest, Kaitlyn, 

graduated from high school in June 2009 

and will attend Longwood University this 

fall, studying Biology. They currently reside 

in Spotsylvania, Va.

promoted to Lead Associate in the 

strategy and technology consulting firm, 

Booz Allen Hamilton. Rod is a modeling 

and simulation expert, leading the 

firms on-site support team at the Air 

Force Research Laboratory, Munitions 

Directorate, at Eglin Air Force Base, in 

Fort Walton Beach, Fla. He joined Booz 

Allen Hamilton three years ago upon 

retirement from active duty in the United

The couple now lives happily in Wallace,

Vegas, and 4-year-old Cardigan Corgi,

We Give 

Kara Sowa Barger ’80 

Present Parent 

I am the fourth out of five Sowa children 

to graduate from Bishop Denis 

J. O’Connell High School. This was a 

sacrifice for my parents because my father 

owned his own business and my mom was 

a stay-at-home mom. When it was time for 

my parents to send my brother Frank, who 

is the oldest, to high school they looked 

at all their options. Fairfax County had a 

reputation for solid public high schools. At 

the time their options for a Catholic high 

school were Bishop O’Connell, Bishop 

Ireton or Gonzaga. My parents wanted 

us to get the same Christian values we 

were learning at home from school. They 

decided on Bishop O’Connell because of 

its wonderful reputation. 

My brother Frank graduated in 1975, my 

sister Mary in 1976, my sister Kathleen 

in 1977 and my brother Thomas in 1985. 

I graduated in 1980. We all have great 

memories of O’Connell which is one 

reason my brother Frank sent his oldest 

three to O’Connell and my sister Mary 

sent her oldest son to O’Connell. I kept the 

legacy going by sending my four children 

to O’Connell. David Ryan graduated 

in 2008, Riley and Ian in 2010, and my 

daughter Kelsey will graduate this June as 

part of the class of 2011. Since 1975 when 

my brother Frank graduated, my parents 

have seen six grandchildren graduate from 

O’Connell. 

My sister Kathleen’s son, Ian, came to live 

with our family midway through his freshman 

year in 2007. Kathleen died of breast 

cancer in 1998. Kathleen loved O’Connell 

and lived the true spirit of O’Connell all 

four years she attended. There is a bust of 

her in the O’Connell chapel. Ian started 

O’Connell during January of his freshman 

year of high school. The students at 

O’Connell accepted Ian and treated him 

with true Christian kindness from the 

start. This is one memory of O’Connell 

that I am proud of as an alumnus, past parent 

and current parent. O’Connell students 

care about one another and treat each 

other with dignity and respect. 

O’Connell also has a great and unique tradition 

of allowing its alumni at graduation 

at the Shrine of the Basilica to hand the 

diploma to their graduating child. Handing 

diplomas to David Ryan, Riley and Ian 

were some of the more special moments I 

remember. 

My father, Frank J. Sowa II, spent many 

years supporting and volunteering for 

O’Connell. He was a member of the Board 

of Governors for 15 years and was the 

Chairman of the Finance Committee for 

four years. I have tried to carry on that 

legacy of volunteering for O’Connell, 

through the time I have spent on the PTO 

board, volunteering for sporting events for 

my children, helping co-chair a committee 

for the Gala/Auction and co-chairing a 

committee for the All Night Grad Party. 

I recently attended my 30th high school 

reunion. Friendships made those many 

years ago were renewed and strengthened, 

which is another testament to O’Connell’s 

great qualities. Friends had raised 

families, made careers, and grown their 

Christian values nurtured during those 

four important high school years. 

I am proud I attended O’Connell, proud 

my children chose to continue that family 

tradition, and proud of my continued 

involvement with a great school that has 

meant so much to me and my family.

Alex Inglese ’72 

Present Parent 

My O’Connell journey began in August of 

1968. I was enrolled in Fairfax High School 

and a week before school was to start, 

my parents informed me that I would be 

attending Bishop Denis J. O’Connell High 

School instead (back then kids didn’t have 

much to input into their education)! My 

parent’s decision was an excellent one and 

my brother Chris, sister Ginny and I all 

benefited from our time at DJO. The education 

that I received, the lifelong friendships 

that were made, and the religious founda- 

tion that was set all have helped me grow 

into the person I am today. 

After I graduated from O’Connell, I went 

on to graduate from The University of 

Virginia and the Darden School of Business. 

There were several O’Connell alumni 

in both my undergraduate and graduate 

programs at UVA. It was easy to see that 

O’Connell had prepared us well for college 

and graduate school. 

I have traveled away from Little Falls Road 

and now have returned. I was married 

in 2007 to Karen Carter. It is funny how 

life unfolds and how if we stay true to our 

values and remain close to God, our life 

carries so much meaning. Karen’s first 

husband, Robert (Bob) Carter, Jr. was an 

O’Connell graduate from the class of 1987. 

He passed away in 2002 leaving Karen 

and their two sons, Robert III (Trey) and 

Jack. When Karen and I met, we immediately 

shared a common interest in our 

love for Bishop O’Connell High School. 

Bob had one brother and six sisters all of 

whom graduated from Bishop O’Connell 

as well. Together Karen and I have four 

children. We have two girls and two boys. 

Trey is currently a sophomore at O’Connell 

and Jack will be a freshman at O’Connell 

next year. The girls, Kristen (a junior) and 

Becky (a 5th grader) are enrolled in Fairfax 

County Public Schools. 

Having met Karen and making the decision 

to send the boys to O’Connell encouraged 

me to give back to the school that has done 

so much for me and so many others. I have 

come across faculty, administration, and 

staff who are dedicated to enriching the 

lives of the students whom they teach, 

mentor or coach. I have witnessed God’s 

loving care through many of these dedicated 

professionals. The faculty, administration 

and staff know the O’Connell students 

by name. Their mission is to develop the 

whole student; academically, spiritually 

and athletically. I am involved with the 

Realtors, Lenders and Builders Committee 

and the Facilities Committee. Both groups 

are made up of other alumni and parents of 

students who are giving their time to help 

make O’Connell the best school it can be. 

In a world where everyone is in a rush to 

move on, it is nice to come home and stay at 

O’Connell. 

Sr. Catherine (Cathy) Hill, I.H.M. (’66) 

Vice Principal, Academics 

Nothing quite compares to growing up 

in Northern Virginia. World news is local 

news. Ideas flow freely; opportunities 

abound. It is in this world that my life direction 

and vocation took shape. Mom and Dad 

loved to learn, were solid in their practice of 

the Faith and totally available to the needs 

of others. Sisters and teachers at St. Agnes 

simultaneously challenged and nurtured 

their students. The parish was family- oriented 

to its core. 

Then came O’Connell. Like every other 

O’Connell student, teacher or parent, I 

have both the common memories of the 

O’Connell experience and my own unique 

set of memory highlights from pilot AP 

classes, basketball, forensics, SCA, good 

friends and favorite teachers. High school 

seniors always wonder how successful they 

can be at the next level. During my freshman 

year at Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie 

Mellon), I knew that I could do well academically 

and keep my faith beyond the setting 

of my Catholic school experience. So, in 

September, l967, I entered the Congregation 

of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate 

Heart of Mary—the IHM’s.

combination for me. High 

School graduates from the 

sixties, for all of the bad 

press we often get, are men 

and women committed to 

service, focused on the future 

and involved citizens 

of the global community. I 

was just one of many expressing my activism 

through a religious vocation. Over the 

years, my community assignments have 

always involved teaching or school administration. 

I worked in small towns and urban 

areas, among the well-to-do and with the 

poor, in areas which were strongly Catholic 

and in places where Catholics were in the 

minority. With each mission, I become more 

convinced of the value of Catholic education 

for the Church and for our nation. 

In 2005, I was offered the opportunity to 

reconnect to O’Connell. I joined the science 

department as a chemistry teacher. Last 

year, I became the Academic Dean, a job 

I held previously at another 

high school (Bishop McDevitt 

in Harrisburg, Pa.). Exciting 

new ideas are on the horizon.

teacher and then use that simple reconnection

help to provide for others what we received 

– a unique experience, the foundation for a 

lifetime. It can be our way of making a difference 

and of saying thanks. Continue the

Program 

Each year, alumni, current parents, 

faculty, staff, parents of alumni and friends 

are asked to support Bishop O’Connell 

through a gift to the Annual Fund. The 

school counts on the recurring annual 

gifts to cover approximately 20 percent of 

the operating budget. This past year 1,200 

members of the O’Connell community 

made over $440,000 in gifts for the 

schools greatest immediate needs. 

Gifts to the Annual Fund are unrestricted 

in nature and provide the school with 

the flexibility to support all the programs 

each year. From computer equipment to 

teacher salaries, facilities and maintenance 

of our 53-year-old building, Smart boards 

in our classrooms, athletics and musical 

productions—the Annual Fund provides for 

an educational atmosphere that is vibrant— 

academically, athletically and socially.

The President’s Club is a special group of donors who demonstrate 

exceptional leadership and generous commitment to the mission of 

Bishop O’Connell High School. Membership is open to individuals, 

families or organizations who make a minimum annual gift of $1,000 to

Ballard Scholarship

The scholarship is granted each year to 

incoming O’Connell freshmen who have 

demonstrated both exceptional academic 

achievement and outstanding leadership 

ability at the middle school. 

Barry Breen Scholarship 

Fund for the Visual and 

Performing Arts 

This scholarship was established by the 

Board of Governors in 2010 as a tribute 

to immediate past President Barry Breen. 

Barry was a passionate supporter of the 

visual and performing arts program at 

Bishop O’Connell. The scholarship will 

directly benefit two seniors (one boy/one 

girl) who exhibit exceptional talent in the 

area of visual and/or performing arts. 

De La Salle Award 


by Bishop O’Connell High School and is 

awarded to four freshmen students each 

year for excellent academic achievement 

beyond the classroom setting. Students scoring 

in the top 40 percent of the High School 

Placement test are eligible for consideration. 

Henry Heishman 

Scholarship 

The Henry Heishman was established in 

memory of beloved O’Connell parent Henry 

Heishman. The scholarship honors a rising 

senior who demonstrates leadership skills 

through a willingness to contribute to the 

school. It honors a student who is humble, 

hard working, respectful, and active in extracurricular 

activities and who has plans or a 

desire to attend a four-year college. 

IHM Award 


by Bishop O’Connell High School and is 

awarded to four freshmen students who 

offer spontaneous, dependable and responsible 

service to others without seeking 

recognition or reward; whose character and 

example give witness to others of the gospel 

values seen in the works and teachings of Jesus 

our Redeemer. Each elementary school 

in the Diocese of Arlington may nominate 

up to two candidates for these awards.

“Jake” Jacobs, beloved former O’Connell

McMahon Scholarship 

This scholarship was established in the 

1990’s to recognize and pay tribute to the 

interest in Catholic education professed 

by Monsignor John J. McMahon. This 

scholarship provides tuition assistance 

to students who otherwise would not 

financially have the opportunity to attend 

Bishop O’Connell. 

Col. Frank Muller 

Leadership Award 

This scholarship was established by the 

Muller family in honor of their father, 

Col. Frank Muller, beloved former math 

teacher. This partial scholarship is 

awarded to a student who has demonstrated 

high moral character, personal 

discipline, academic effort and leadership 

by example. 

Murphy Scholarship 


by Mr. Robert Murphy ’67 on behalf of 

his family (eight brothers and sisters are 

O’Connell graduates) in memory of their 

mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Murphy, beloved

Something about DJO struck a chord with Lawrence 

Arthur. Was it the strict dress code of jackets and 

ties Was it the Catholic-based education he remembered
