Champions for Cortland Partners in Leadership In 2003, SUNY Cortland established its leadership gift recognition program called Partners in Leadership. Its mission is to encourage the highest level of philanthropy to the College while honoring those individuals, businesses and organizations who are SUNY Cortland’s most generous annual donors. The name reflects the substantial partnership between those donors and SUNY Cortland. Their gifts impact the scope and quality of the educational experience available to current Cortland students. The Red Dragon Society, as indicated by a diamond (t), recognizes loyal benefactors who have provided financial support to the College at any giving level for the previous three or more consecutive years. This special group of alumni, parents and friends regularly support, sustain and enhance the Cortland experience. The gift recognition societies at right reflect the level of giving by their members between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2012. Vernay ’83 t STEPPING UP Michael LaPointe ’00 A two-time All-American, Michael LaPointe ’00 led the Red Dragons to three NCAA Division III World Series appearances from 1998 to 2000. Michael LaPointe ’00, one of the greatest baseball players ever to put on a SUNY Cortland uniform, didn’t cut his ties to the College after the final out of his All-American career. Instead, the former business economics major, who has since found success in the finance industry, has given back to SUNY Cortland and the baseball team as a dedicated Partner in Leadership. LaPointe not only still follows the SUNY Cortland team, but recruits newly graduated players to positions in corporate America. “There were people both in the Economics Department and on the coaching staff who took an investment in me,” said Mike, who lives in Stamford, Conn. “We still stick together and I don’t think that’s all that common at other schools. “I just wanted to get more deeply involved if I could. On the other side, I’ve been fortunate enough to bring a couple of baseball alumni down who have turned out to make me look really good in hiring.” Italicized names denote deceased 6
