“Words ..words .. words … I am so sick of words,” sang Eliza in My Fair Lady!<br />
I’m not! Sick, that is!<br />
Words to me are the best gifts that can be exchanged, the most valuable objects friends<br />
can cherish for years. <strong>The</strong>y say so much, they express exactly what you feel and want to<br />
say!<br />
(“Exactly” : now there is a word that creates problems for many of our youngsters who have<br />
grown up on a steady diet of French fries, litres of Coke, and images from across oceans<br />
that they have never crossed in their lives!)<br />
Our youngsters today use words lightly, just as they use up data bytes paid for by parents!<br />
Words seem to have lost their import, their weightage, their immediacy! And this apparent<br />
fall in value comes from the fact that every person in this country uses too many of them!<br />
We are a verbose nation. And we don’t listen to anybody’s words!!! Here are a few<br />
examples:<br />
1. We put great stock in how long our film mothers expound on family values before<br />
they die (onscreen, of course)! <strong>The</strong>y heave and pant and breathe through entire passages<br />
exhorting the errant offspring to mend their ways and not stray from the path of virtue!<br />
<strong>The</strong>n, having delivered their speech, they “die” with eyes open! Right!
