the residents of <strong>Celebration</strong> to benefit Relay for Life.

pets will be available for a suggested donation of 

just five dollars. 

We will also have a special holiday ornament decorating 

party where children can create a masterpiece to 

take home and place on the family tree. Then to finish 

out the night, there will be a special showing of

Coming Soon – 2014 CROA Election 

With fall winding down and the holidays just around the corner, 

it will soon be time to usher in the New Year and a new CROA 

Board of Directors. In 2014, we will be looking for a few good men 

and women to fill the four (4) open positions on the <strong>Celebration</strong> 

Residential Owners’ Association (CROA) Board of Directors. 

Governed by a seven-member Board of Directors, the Association 

is responsible for preserving, protecting and enhancing the common 

areas, recreational facilities and the overall property values of the 

community. CROA also provides for the operation, care, upkeep and 

maintenance of the area of common responsibility and contracts 

for the repair, additions or improvements to the area of common 

responsibility (CROA owned buildings, parks, pools, etc.). 

The Process… 

• A “Call for Candidates” will be mailed to each owner later this 

month. Owner is defined in the <strong>Celebration</strong> Community Charter 

as “persons holding the record title to a unit”. 

• Owners interested in running will have 30 days to complete and 

return their “<strong>Dec</strong>laration of Candidacy” to Town Hall. These 

forms will be made available on the Front Porch website at 

www.celebration.fl.us. Successful candidates will serve a two 

year term. 

• Information, including biographies provided by each candidate, 

will be published in early February which will provide 

background, qualifications and why they want to serve. 

• A series of candidate Question & Answer sessions will be 

scheduled prior to the election deadline to give residents an 

opportunity to get to know the candidates face to face as well as 

discern their positions on various topics of interest and concern 

to owners. 

• Each of these positions will be filled on an At-Large basis. In other 

words, all candidates participating in this election will be eligible 

for one of the four open seats. The top four (4) candidates with 

the most votes will fill the open positions. 

• Election results will be announced at the Annual Meeting on 

Tues., Mar. 11, 2014. 

Please consider volunteering your time and talent to serve our 

community in this most important capacity. This is your opportunity 

to have your voice count in the governance of <strong>Celebration</strong> and take an 

active part in keeping <strong>Celebration</strong> “one of the prettiest neighborhoods

Looking Back at <strong>2013</strong> Gives 

Warm Feelings for 2014

As we come to the end of the year, I want to wish everyone a joyous 

holiday season. I hope you are able to enjoy some time with loved 

ones, recharge your energy levels and get ready for a successful new 

year. 

There’s no doubt that <strong>2013</strong> was an eventful year for Osceola County 

and sets the table for continued success in 2014. 

Let me just talk briefly about some successes. 

In February the West Osceola Branch of the library opened. This 

state-of-the-art 10,000-square-foot facility at 305 Campus St. more 

than quadrupled the space of the previous facility. This was an 

exciting milestone for <strong>Celebration</strong> residents and I was happy to 

see this project completed. 

Our economy continued to show signs of improvement. Our tourism 

sector had a record year. I was pleased to participate in missions to 

improve those efforts to the United Kingdom, Ireland and Colombia. 

Having an elected official on these trips opens new doors for 

Experience Kissimmee as they market our destination. Osceola County 

collected $37.7 million from the tourist-development tax for the fiscal 

year that ended Sept. 30, compared with $34.2 million a year ago. 

The tax is levied on hotel rooms, time-shares and short-term rentals. 

Health care is a major issue for our 

community. This year I was pleased to 

participate in the Business of Health 

summit held at the Nicholson Center 

at <strong>Celebration</strong> Health. The event was 

a key gathering of community 

partners concerned about the health 

of our community. I believe the event 

will better utilize resources; improve 

the delivery and quality of care, while 

expanding that care for un-insured 

and underinsured residents.

As we prepare for 2014, transportation funding will be a focal point 

of the county’s efforts as this community tries to figure out how to 

maintain our roads and to pay for services such as Lynx. <strong>Dec</strong>isions 

will need to be made on how we accomplish those things – and 

I look forward to how we meet those and other challenges in the 

coming year.

We reached out to the homeless in our community with two key 

projects. Victory Village and the Hope Center of Osceola County. The 

Center, supported by Community Presbyterian Church in <strong>Celebration</strong>, 

is a vital “one-stop” resource center for homeless individuals and families 

seeking services. Under the umbrella of Community Presbyterian, 

the Hope Center is supported through volunteers of approximately 

20 area churches and local and regional social service organizations. 

Anyone wishing to get involved should email moreinfo@hope192.com. 

Victory Village was the next logical step – affordable housing for 

those residents living in hotels along U.S. 192. The project converted 

a property that was in foreclosure into 20 one, two and three bedroom 

apartments. The first families moved in last month. 

Remaking U.S. 192 is a long-term project. The W192 Redevelopment 

Authority is working diligently to make a difference in the area that 

is the community’s main economic artery. I expect more things to 

come into focus as the authority continues the process it has begun.

due on the first day of every January, April, July and October. 

After the last business day of those months, payments not 

posted to accounts will begin to accrue late fees and interest.

<strong>Celebration</strong> Community Development District 

Holiday <strong>Dec</strong>orations 

<strong>Celebration</strong> has enjoyed a time-honored tradition of having 

decorations, holiday lights, and events this time of year, and this year 

promises to be no exception. As everyone is planning their outdoor 

decorations, the District office wants to remind you of a few things 

related to CDD facilities, and what is and is not permitted within 

the CDD rights-of-way: 

• Absolutely no power cords or other trip hazards may be placed on or 

over the CDD sidewalks. You may do whatever you wish behind the 

sidewalk on your own property, but the CDD sidewalks must be kept 

free of all encumbrances and hazards. 

• No decorations are permitted on any directional signs, traffic signs, 

speed limit signs, or street name signs. Some of these are DOT signs 

and others are CDD signs. All must be kept free and clear. 

• Due to liability issues, do not decorate any of the street light or alley 

light poles. We do not want any residents endangering themselves 

hanging streamers or decorations from these poles. We need the 

pole identification tags to remain 

visible, and our staff must be able 

to perform maintenance from time 

to time. 

• Residents may decorate the CDD trees 

in the rights-of-way, so long as the 

method used to attach decorations is 

not invasive (for example, no nails, 

staples, tacks, or other invasive means). 

Ribbons, fishing line, dental floss and 

other hanging methods are completely 

acceptable. Please make sure your 

decorations are properly secured so as 

not to blow off and do not hang lower than 14 feet over the sidewalk 

to avoid people running into them.

Community Standards Looks Ahead to 2014

Whenever I think about drawing a line in the sand I think of Jack Parr. 

When Jack Parr quit the tonight show in 1960 he said, “There has got 

to be a better way to make a living.” He quit in protest of a censored 

joke he did on his show. Then several weeks later he came back and 

picked up where he left off stating that there wasn’t a better way to 

make a living. Well, I have said that we will not have another 

Community Wide Inspection (CWI) and I have spent some time 

thinking there has to be a better way to conduct an inspection of the 

whole community. The Community Standards Department is always 

looking for better ways to maintain the <strong>Celebration</strong> Standard. 

Over the last several months many of your fellow <strong>Celebration</strong> residents 

got together and reviewed the Community Standards process from 

both the Covenants and Architecture Review sides. In addition your 

management company, CCMC, sent three of their large-scale 

community managers into <strong>Celebration</strong> to visit the community and 

help brainstorm ideas for maintaining a high standard in a growing 

community. Several new ideas were suggested and are scheduled 

for implementation in the upcoming year. 

One of the things we will be implementing is the “Green Up, Clean 

Up” campaign next year. This is a community review of all the villages 

that is scheduled to begin in March. The team reviewing the community 

will be made up of both staff and volunteers. For those of you 

who have been around since 2006, this will be an updated, “better way 

of doing things” review of the community. Town Hall will be notifying 

residents when we will be in your village to review the condition for 

painting, landscape, cleaning, etc. The <strong>Celebration</strong> Home 

Improvement Expo will take place in March 2014 to assist residents 

with meeting vendors who can help complete those maintenance 

items. Town Hall will be sharing helpful tips in preparation for the 

“Green Up, Clean Up”, utilizing the Front Porch Theater to post videos.

Dear EarthTalk: Can you discuss pollutants in car interior materials, 

and also pollution inside cars originating from gasoline and diesel 

exhausts outside the car -- Mervyn Kline, Philadelphia, PA 

The interior of your car may seem like a safe haven from air pollution, 

but it may actually be quite the opposite. Chemicals emanating from 

the steering wheel, dashboard, armrests and seats mix with the airborne 

pollution being generated under the hood to form a witch’s 

brew of toxins for those riding inside. 

“Research shows that vehicle 

interiors contain a unique 

cocktail of hundreds of toxic 

chemicals that off-gas in small, 

confined spaces,” says Jeff 

Gearhart of the Ecology 

Center, a Michigan-based 

non-profit. The extreme air 

temperatures inside cars on 

sunny days can increase the 

concentration of Volatile 

Organic Compounds (VOCs) 

and break other chemicals 

down into more toxic constituents. 

Some of the worst 

offenders include airborne 

bromine, chlorine, lead and 

other heavy metals. “Since these chemicals are not regulated, 

consumers have no way of knowing the dangers they face,” 

adds Gearhart. 

Exhaust fumes also find their way into the passenger cabins of many 

cars. The International Center for Technology Assessment (ICTA) 

found that concentrations of carbon monoxide (a noxious by-product 

of internal combustion known to cause headaches, dizziness, nausea 

and fatigue as well as being a major asthma trigger) may be 10 times 

higher inside any given car than outdoors along the roadside. ICTA 

added that in light of the fact that the average American spends an 

hour and a half driving around each day, in-car air pollution may 

pose “one of the greatest modern threats to human health.” 

To help consumers minimize their exposure, the Ecology Center 

released the fourth version of its Consumer Guide to Toxic Chemicals 

in Cars in 2012, comparing over 200 different cars across the 2010 

and 2011 model years. Those scoring the most kudos in regard to 

interior air quality include the Honda Civic, Toyota Prius and Honda 

CR-Z. The Civic scored first by being free of bromine-based flame 

retardants (BFRs) in interior components, utilizing polyvinyl chloride 

(PVC)-free interior fabrics and trim, and having low levels of heavy 

metals. 

Meanwhile, pulling up the rear were Mitsubishi’s Outlander Sport, the 

Chrysler 200 SC and the Kia Soul. The Outlander finished in last place 

due to its use of BFRS as well as antimony-based flame retardants in its 

interior, chromium treated leather components 

and excessive amounts of lead in 

seating materials. 

“The good news is overall vehicle ratings 

are improving,” reports the Ecology Center,

Consumers can check on their late model 

car by steering their web browser to the 

HealthyStuff.org website, the Ecology 

Center’s free online resource for consumer 

information. While environmental and 

public health groups are working to try to 

get automakers to clean up their interiors, individuals can reduce their 

exposure by parking in the shade, using interior sun reflectors to keep 

temperatures down inside the car and rolling down the windows to let 

the fresh air in.

Holiday Crime Prevention

Christmas, Hanukah, Kwanza or whichever holiday you celebrate, is 

a joyous time of year. The hustle and bustle of decorating, shopping, 

cooking and planning or attending holiday parties make this time of 

year quite busy. With these events happening, people tend to let their 

guard down a bit more than usual. Unfortunately criminals like the 

holidays because there are more opportunities for them to commit 

their crimes. Recalling a previous article of mine, which advised that 

whether crimes occur, mainly depends on you giving or taking away 

the opportunity for bad guys to commit them. These are some 

common safety tips to help keep your holidays safe by taking away 

that opportunity. 

Home Safety Tips 

Schedule package deliveries when you are going to be home or have 

them delivered to a trusted neighbor, relative, temporary PO Box or 

your job. 

Keep gifts out of sight of windows or leave the curtains closed. 

Always lock your doors and windows, even if you plan to be out for 

a short while. Also make sure doors and windows will lock with any 

Christmas light extension cords running through them. 

Use caution and be aware of your 

surroundings at the ATM. Avoid an 

ATM in an isolated or dimly lit area.

If shopping alone, request store security or a manager to escort 

you to your car. 

Vacation Safety Tips 

Many people take trips this time of year and leave their homes. 

Take a few extra steps before you depart to help ensure your 

belongings are safe. Make sure all doors and windows are securely 

and properly locked. Set your alarms. Have a trusted friend, neighbor 

or relative periodically check your home. 

<strong>News</strong>paper delivery can be placed on a vacation hold. Contact the

U.S. Mail delivery can be stopped while you are away with several 

re-delivery options upon your return. For further information, visit

Set your home alarms and make sure the monitoring company has 

your current phone numbers. 

Don't “advertise” your new high-dollar purchases after the holidays. 

Break down the boxes of TVs, stereos, computers and etc. Turn 

them inside out or cut them up before putting them in the trash 

or recycling. 

Document and photograph the model and serial numbers of high 

valued items for later reference. 

Shopping Safety Tips 

Lock your car doors! 

Keep your full attention on your surroundings. A distracted person 

is especially vulnerable to robbers. 

Park in well-lit areas or ones that will have lights when exiting the 

mall after a day of shopping. 

Put packages in locked trunks and out of view. Thieves do their own 

form of window shopping. They look in parked cars for gifts and 

other merchandise, and will break through car windows to get at 

such valuables. Keep your receipts with you. 

Carry purses strategically with zippers closed and large openings 

facing towards you. 

Put wallets in front pockets or zippered in coat linings. 

Keep large amounts of cash hidden. <strong>Rob</strong>bers love those who like to 

show off their wads of cash and will follow you until the opportunity 

to strike happens. 

The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office can also be contacted using the 

non-emergency number of 407-348-2222. Advise the dispatcher that 

you would like to request “vacation checks” of your home. They will 

obtain information from you and your request will be sent to the 

deputies working in the area to conduct extra patrols. This is a free 

service. 

Lights, a radio and/or televisions can be put on timers to give your 

home an occupied appearance. Make sure to adjust timers to 

accommodate the earlier sunsets. 

Avoid “broadcasting” to everybody that you will be gone. It’s nice to 

brag about the two week trip to Tahiti, but criminals are tech savvy 

and use all forms of social media to check when you’ll be gone. 

Delay posting pictures on social media until you are home. 

The holiday season is a great time of year and can be very special 

with great memories. While we can never guarantee crimes won’t be 

committed, but by taking necessary precautions and personal safety 

measures, you can certainly help lessen the chances of you or your 

family from being the victim. Please meet with your family to discuss 

these crime prevention tips. I truly wish each of you a Merry 

Christmas and Happy Holidays. Please be safe.

for competition or fitness. Participants must be able to swim 

50 meters freestyle with rotary breathing.

Community Chorus Celebrates Christmas 

“It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…” These few words 

conjure up memories of Christmas past for all of us – from the fresh 

pine smell that comes from a real tree to shoppers scurrying to find 

that last minute “perfect gift” to sumptuous holiday dinners with 

family and friends. And, for those of us raised in chillier climates - 

glistening window panes etched with frost, lopsided “dusty” snow 

men and big, fluffy flakes swirling around from head to toe come 

to mind…Brrrr! Whatever your recollections, the <strong>Celebration</strong> 

Community Chorus’ Christmas Program aptly titled “The Spirit 

of Christmas”, is sure to capture the essence of the Holiday Season. 

Brought to you by <strong>Celebration</strong> Parks & Recreation. 

Chorus Director Kristopher Schave has added some very special 

pieces to this year’s program including an a cappella arrangement 

(a first for the chorus!) entitled O Magnum Mysterium. Other 

selections range from the truly classical (a medley of compositions 

by Vivaldi, Bach and Handel) to contemporary favorites varying from 

sacred hymns to light-hearted melodies like Jingle Bells, Let it Snow 

and Jolly Old Saint Nicholas.

Skin Care to Protect Your Skin

As anyone who has ever cut into an apple knows, the apple quickly 

turns brown when exposed to air. This is a great example of oxidation, 

a normal process where the cells die and are replaced with newer cells. 

Unfortunately, there are a small percentage of cells that change into 

damaged free radical cells. This can set off a chain reaction that 

encourages more cells to become damaged by binding with the

<strong>Celebration</strong> Area Council

It was another banner year for the 

<strong>Celebration</strong> Area Council (CAC). Vanessa 

Barnes, Chairperson for <strong>2013</strong>, led the way 

for our first locally held Career Fairs in 

collaboration with Stetson University and 

the Kissimmee Chamber of Commerce. 

They were attended by over 400 potential 

employees with 20 employers with 

candidates being hired on the spot. 

We also held our 4th Annual Health and 

Lifestyle Fair at Town Hall in partnership 

with <strong>Celebration</strong> Parks and Recreation. We 

would like to express our gratitude to our 

sponsors Med-Life Institute, Florida Hospital, and Mom’s Meals, 

our guest speaker Anil Gupta, author of Immediate Happiness, 

as well as our many exhibitors for making this possible. We also 

would like to thank Janet Martinez of LaSalle Computer Learning 

Center for donating an iPad for the Health Fair raffle. The lucky 

winner was Kim Colon. All proceeds from the event fund 

scholarships for <strong>Celebration</strong> High School students.

and maps of local interest as well as 

advertising that keeps the community 

thriving through commerce. 

Kicking off the new year will be a Career Fair for Juniors at 

<strong>Celebration</strong> High School held on Wed., Jan. 22 from 8-11 a.m. in the 

Media Center. We are seeking professionals in their particular fields 

to provide answers to students’ career questions, Ie: accountants, 

medical field, technology, fitness etc. If you would like to participate,

The Spa at Mirasol is <strong>Celebration</strong>’s longest established, full-service day 

spa. “We often say we are the best-kept secret in town, but in fact we 

are open to all <strong>Celebration</strong> residents and visitors” says <strong>Celebration</strong> 

resident and spa owner Monica Raffel. Offerings include a variety of 

spa services like relaxing massages, rejuvenating facials and refreshing

What Are You Giving This Year

There is a reason so many people love this time of year. It is not just 

the lights, music and parties. It is because we do something assigned 

to the holiday season. We give–openly and without reservation. 

We can get so caught up in the spirit of giving that we shower love 

not just on family and friends, but scout leaders, teachers, even our 

dog walkers. And it makes us feel good. While opening a gift given 

to you can bring a smile, watching someone you love gasp with joy 

when they open yours can take your breath away. The simple act of 

giving a piece of yourself to someone else is what love is all about. 

Once we have stripped our “giving shelves” bare in <strong>Dec</strong>ember, 

come January, sometimes our heart closes for business. We become 

too busy or stressed to give much more. Home-made cookies and 

sentimental cards are last month's news; sometimes I can't give 

even a smile, let alone a parking space. 

When holiday joy leads to the New Year 

blues, is it because I allotted just one month 

of the year to be about someone else, and now the other eleven 

are focused on me and mine 

I have a friend who sends nothing at Christmas, but come 

Valentine’s Day, you might find one of her meticulously-crafted 

cards in your mailbox. She sends them to everyone on her list as her 

way of spreading love throughout the year. She’s got the right idea. 

What if each of us decided to feel the joy of giving during not just 

one month, but every month of the year A wave, a helping hand, 

a small act of kindness; giving what you have to ease the burden 

of someone else. Now that’s worth celebrating.

Cup for Second Year 

Dozens of athletes from across Florida put their game faces on for the 

<strong>2013</strong> Kissimmee-St. Cloud Senior Games, one of the most exciting 

and fun-filled annual competitions for mature athletes. More than 

20 <strong>Celebration</strong> residents participated in the <strong>2013</strong> Games, helping to 

bring home the “Community Cup” for the second year in a row. The 

“Community Cup” is awarded to the Osceola County community that 

wins the most total medals in the card games. As the reigning champs, 

<strong>Celebration</strong> will hold the trophy for a year. Great work, <strong>Celebration</strong>! 

Experience Kissimmee hosted the <strong>2013</strong> Senior Games along with 

Gold Sponsor <strong>Celebration</strong> Town Hall, and Silver Sponsor the town

children aren’t hungry during Winter Break. Your help is needed to 

fill 100 boxes with food. 

Children attending <strong>Celebration</strong> and other area schools depend on 

free lunches to keep hunger away. These children will be without

Dreams Can Come True

I pleaded with the guard at the gate, “Please sir. I was told I’d be 

able to drive right up to the backside of the gallery. There’s no way 

I can carry all of these supplies.” I referenced the easel, box of 

paints and brushes and the canvas carrier filled with two wet oil 

paintings in the back of my car. “Could you try calling the manager 

of the gallery to see if they just forgot to put my name on the 

list” 

Ten minutes later, the guard finally lowered the security ramp and 

allowed me to drive onto Avenue Of The Stars. I followed a route 

behind World Showcase Lagoon, under part of Test Track, past 

Norway, America and Japan, beneath the International Gateway 

and finally parked outside of The Living Seas. 

Moments later, I was painting in the Art Of Disney gallery, chatting 

with guests and occasionally smiling for photos or signing 

purchased artwork. 

Surreal. Completely surreal.

As an annual passholder, I frequent Epcot, but never in this 

capacity … and certainly never with a sign in front of the gallery 

that read, “Appearing today: <strong>Rob</strong> <strong>Kaz</strong>.” 

As an artist, I admire the works that grace the walls of galleries at 

Disney. I have aspired to shake the hands of animators and artists 

who make people smile with the magic they create. 

Today, I was that artist. 

While painting for three days in Epcot (followed by appearances 

at Festival Of The Masters in Downtown Disney the following 

weekend), I had the incredible fortune to meet Disney fans who 

rival my own passion for the history, the talent and the sheer 

magic that goes into creating the universe we know as Disney. 

So many of them, like me, appreciate the tiny details, the often 

untold tales and the names that get so little recognition even 

though they are responsible for our favorite characters, stories 

and fantastic worlds. 

I was humbled by the kind words that were poured upon me as 

I painted over the weekend. I can only hope that each person 

with whom I connected, each person who stopped in to say hello, 

each person who smiled upon seeing some of my paintings will 

understand how much I value the embrace.

A New <strong>Celebration</strong> of Life

Upon entering the <strong>Celebration</strong> Welcome Center we were immediately 

embraced with offers to assist our family, as we returned to Florida 

from a long stay in St. Louis NICU and our home in Virginia. 

Mommy battling wires and tubes after 

transplant. 

My second child Wrenn came 

three weeks early and never 

returned to my delivery room 

that April evening in 2010. 

Within 24 hours she was placed 

in the Winnie Palmer NICU 

(neonatal intensive care unit) . 

Ten days later the doctors said 

Wrenn was in respiratory 

distress and that the X-rays 

were unchanged even after 

administering multiple 

antibiotics. At this point the 

pulmonary team ordered 

genetic testing. 

Our lives paused while we 

waited those grueling five 

weeks and the NICU became our new family at Winnie Palmer. Our 

wonderful primary nurses moved Wrenn next to a big window, which 

gave us some privacy and a bit more space. During our visits with her, 

I made friends with some amazing people as I watched them care for 

my sick baby. The Winnie 

Palmer staff literally carried 

our family through those 

uncertain days. 

In early July the tests showed 

that Wrenn had a rare genetic 

lung disease called ABCA3 

Surfactant Deficiency, one 

of four cases worldwide. 

She lacked the protein needed 

to keep her lungs open, which 

was why she required eight 

liters of oxygen. Bottom line– 

the only way Wrenn had a 

chance to live was through 

donor lungs. She would need 

a double lung transplant, as 

soon as possible.

My heart stopped beating at 

that moment, and I wasn’t 

breathing because my lips, 

I was told, were purple. Wrenn 

was transported to St. Louis 

immediately to await transplant 

and we followed. For seven 

weeks, in the St. Louis NICU, 

Wrenn almost died, had high 

fevers, was on eighteen to 

twenty medications daily 

and was placed on a paralytic. Wrenn during her visit to the <strong>Celebration</strong> 

Finally, on September 21, the Welcome Center. 

transplant coordinator entered 

my room and told me that new lungs were en route. 

We helped wheel Wrenn into surgery and kissed her goodbye, 

worried that we might be doing so for the last time. Unfortunately, 

lung transplants aren’t like heart, liver, and kidney transplants where 

people can live for several decades with multiple transplants; it’s a 

much younger surgery and has only been performed a few decades. 

The statistics for lung transplantation aren’t good. Wrenn has only 

a 50% chance of surviving five years, and a 20% chance of surviving 

ten years. 

Our life was on pause for almost an entire year while we lived day and 

night in two hospitals. I barely recall a specific memory or photo with 

our son, Tanner, in that year, as his life had been put on hold as well. 

In the children’s hospital, I heard so many sad stories from other 

families. To this day, nothing surprises me anymore–I have heard it 

all. I often found myself thanking God for all the little miracles we 

experienced. I now have a new outlook on life and an appreciation 

for the good days, which I continue to hold on to for dear life. 

We are excited to be a part of the <strong>Celebration</strong> community. I know our 

children will enjoy their childhood in this amazing town, which they 

already call home. When you see Wrenn at the parks and around 

town, please say hello to her and her six-year old brother, Tanner, 

and know her surgical mask is for her protection.

Sheriff Supports New <strong>Celebration</strong> Club

Popular Osceola County Sheriff Bob Hansell is supporting the formation 

of a new club being launched in <strong>Celebration</strong>. That club, which is 

being called the <strong>Celebration</strong> Gun Society, will hold its first meeting on 

Tues., Jan. 7 at Heritage Hall. The Society is being formed to help educate 

residents on safe and responsible gun ownership, as well as to 

provide a forum for the political, hunting, sporting, collectible, and 

self-defense aspects of gun ownership. Sheriff Hansell will be a guest 

speaker at that meeting. 

According to some estimates, roughly 25% of Florida households are 

believed to own a firearm of some kind. Said Sheriff Hansell, “That 

estimate actually sounds low to me, though there are no hard data 

collected in Florida to collaborate it.” 

What worries law enforcement officers such as Sheriff Hansell is not 

private ownership of firearms but rather that many people acquire 

such a weapon without learning how to care for and use it properly. 

He and other local law enforcement officials strongly support 

responsible clubs and organizations that help educate gun owners 

or those considering acquiring a weapon. 

Personally, I was raised in a Midwestern household in which there 

were no firearms. Until recently, I believed that: 

• The right to own firearms originated when the Republic was 

formed because many people relied on hunting for their food 

• Law enforcement officials in general would prefer no private 

ownership of guns 

• People should rely on law enforcement 

agencies to protect them. 

Some of the recent media coverage and political 

dialogue about gun ownership has been quite 

a revelation to me. All three of my fundamental 

beliefs about gun ownership have been wrong. 

The Second Amendment of the U.S. 

Constitution had nothing whatsoever to do 

about hunting food. Most local law enforcement officers support 

private gun ownership. And officers such as Sheriff Hansell encourage 

people to take at least part of the responsibility for the defense of their 

families. “Even if our response time is just a couple of minutes, a lot 

can happen before an officer arrives,” explained Sheriff Hansell. 

“It’s often necessary to take action immediately.” 

The <strong>Celebration</strong> Gun Society will not overtly advocate or promote 

gun sales or ownership. This is definitely not the beginning of some 

sort of vigilante militia. Instead, the Society primarily will focus on 

education, information, and dialogue. The tone will be relaxed, 

friendly, and tolerant of all views. For those interested in sport or 

target shooting, events will be arranged in safe, established facilities 

outside <strong>Celebration</strong>. The Society will be affiliated with the Spirit of 

‘76 Gun Club of Central Florida. 

The Society will meet the first Tuesday of each month at Heritage 

Hall (our precinct voting location) on <strong>Celebration</strong> Ave. Meetings 

will always be open to everyone; membership will not be required 

to attend these meetings.

Celebrators November Meeting

The Celebrators, our town’s 50 and over club met on Wed., Nov. 6 

and Barbara Church introduced 10 new members; happy to have you 

with us! Walt and Sue once again came early to set up the coffee and 

snacks. Thanks so much, you’ve been great! 

Our President Carol Jones asked Gary Garafalo to open the meeting 

with the Pledge of Allegiance and Cathy Carlson and Paul Collins 

talked about the exciting schedule of the Classical Concert Series for 

the <strong>2013</strong>-14 Season. There will be five concerts this year instead of 

four, at no additional cost. Celebrators can purchase the Series tickets 

for the special price of $70 rather than the $80 regular cost. You may 

obtain tickets at The <strong>Celebration</strong> Foundation and at Imagination 

Realty.

activities and news, etc. regarding

holiday music and all types of dances 

including line dances and they will be

member, attorney Mel Pearlman P.A. Mel gave us an overview of the 

legal changes regarding estate planning and suggested that if yours

Mel informed us of an important new authority with which he is 

volunteering as a Director. The West 192 Redevelopment Authority 

is expected to be the biggest project Osceola County has ever taken on 

and will have broad powers to impact every decision made about our 

County in the future. We have all noted the deterioration of US-192 

in recent years so this news is very welcome. Mel is inviting

Veterans Club and Women’s Auxiliary

The Veterans Club and Auxiliary held its third annual dinner and social event last month at the 

Windmill Restaurant in the <strong>Celebration</strong> Golf Club. The evening commenced with the presentation 

of the Service Flags followed by an MIA tribute for those who never returned home–yet. 

Dinner ended with a cake to honor the birthday of the Marine Corps November 10, 1775. 

Entertainment for the evening was provided by the 

Starlites. Celeste Laurer Yanke, Maggie Hepworth and 

Keri Michaud sang mostly standards from the 1940’s 

as well as some contemporary music. 

Commander Sal Negro closed the evening by thanking 

everyone for their assistance and participation in this 

annual event. Sal, whose term as Commander is ending, 

was given a standing ovation for his leadership.

It was a very active time for the men and women of this 

organization – the Veterans Day Parade, the Veterans Day 

Program at Founders Park, culminating with the annual 

dinner. 

Help Now of Osceola Receives Support from 

Women’s Club of <strong>Celebration</strong> 

Help Now of Osceola, Inc., a local women’s shelter serving Osceola 

County, has received enormous support from the Women’s Club of 

<strong>Celebration</strong> for many years. In observation of Domestic Violence 

Awareness Month in October, The Women’s Club of <strong>Celebration</strong> 

awarded $2,000 to Help Now to support survivors residing in the 

safe shelter. 

Family violence is a very serious problem, one of epidemic proportions 

according to the Centers for Disease Control. Last year, 2,316 cases of 

domestic violence were reported to local law enforcement agencies in 

Osceola County. Help Now responds to the needs of the community 

by providing crisis intervention. They received thousands of crisis 

line calls on the 24 hour Domestic Violence Hotline and provided 

safe shelter to hundreds of victims and their children, as well as 

counseling and advocacy services for nearly 3,000 survivors in the 

local community. Help Now is dedicated to ending intimate partner 

violence and the social tolerance that perpetuates it. 

According to Tammy Douglass, Executive Director of Help Now, the 

agency relies heavily on the support of the community to provide the 

life-saving services survivors domestic violence need in order to 

escape a violent intimate partner relationship. “The support that 

Help Now has received from the Women’s Club of <strong>Celebration</strong> has 

been truly amazing,” said Douglass. “The many contributions that 

this wonderful group of women have made to Help Now over the years 

have been pivotal in enabling domestic violence survivors in Osceola 

County to live in a pleasant, safe and healthy environment at the 

shelter when fleeing from abuse.” In the past several years, the 

Women’s Club of <strong>Celebration</strong> has made significant donations of 

items necessary to maintain the shelter, such as a commercial freezer, 

refrigerators, dishwasher, and items such as a large screen television. 

Members of the group have also spent a great deal of time through 

the years bringing fresh juice and milk to the shelter for the children 

who call Help Now’s shelter home. “The dedication of these amazing 

women has made a huge impact on the lives of countless individuals 

in our community.”

made phone calls that helped Democrat Amanda Murphy win her 

recent Florida House election.

an entertaining talk on the recent developments in the Gardens and

Several members have also enjoyed the opportunities of being in the 

Florida Federation of Garden Clubs– a fashion show in Winter 

Gardens and a wonderful Garden Tour in Mount Dora last month. 

Sarah Titzer once again delighted the Club with her skillful creation 

of a floral masterpiece for the holidays. Members were even able to 

take home flowers to re-create her design for themselves.

“Best One Ever!”

The Rotary Club of <strong>Celebration</strong> held their 15th annual Pancake 

Breakfast and Run on Sat., Oct. 26. Thanks to the always-supportive 

<strong>Celebration</strong> Firemen and women. They had the fire station all neat 

and pretty as the volunteers showed up at 5 a.m. There were tables and 

chairs to transport and set-up and along with the Rotarians were helpful 

students from the Interact Clubs, <strong>Celebration</strong> High School (CHS), 

New Dimensions High School, the <strong>Celebration</strong> K-8, the <strong>Celebration</strong> IB 

students and the <strong>Celebration</strong> K-8 and CHS Cheerleaders who continued 

to help throughout the course of the day. We could never have 

done this without them! 

At 8 a.m., the horn sounded and the 10K race began. 212 runners participated 

in the 10K, 5K, and Fun Run. This year Rotary set the pace 

for years to come as the race was timed and certified. 

There were 35 generous sponsors for the event this year including

Creative Sign Solutions, the Osceola Sherriff’s Department,

The Osceola County Conservative Network 

Presents The “Our Country” Christmas Party 

and Candidate Forums

As the kickoff to a series of forums for conservative candidates, Jorge 

Bonilla, Republican candidate for Congress in 2014, told us his story at 

the November meeting of the Republicans of Greater <strong>Celebration</strong>. He 

grew up in Brooklyn in a Puerto Rican community and left there to 

serve with the Navy before 

he settled in Osceola County. Here he rapidly became involved in the 

process of citizen action as a political commentator. 

Among the issues where Jorge knows serious work – not just 

grand-standing – must be done are: 

1. Reducing government regulations which hamper private sector 

business initiatives and keep Osceola County poor 

2. Improving on what has been demonstrated to be a failure in 

healthcare management because efforts to date create and do 

not relieve hardships 

3. Guaranteeing our national security by securing our borders and 

reducing the national debt. Reducing the debt is the biggest threat 

at every level to our freedoms and the core weakness in the 

country’s ability to rise above other pressing issues. 

Other conservative candidates will address the Republicans of Greater 

<strong>Celebration</strong> in the early months of 2014. 

Please note: The conservative Republican club will meet the second 

Tuesday of the month in Heritage Hall except for those dates which 

conflict with <strong>Celebration</strong> recreational commitment. The January 

meeting is Tues., Jan. 9 at 7 p.m.

Orlando Philharmonic opens Concert Series 

with “Venetian Vespers”

The Orlando Philharmonic, accompanied by the UCF Chamber 

Singers, opens the 12th season of The Foundation’s Classical Concert 

Series on Fri., <strong>Dec</strong>. 6 at 7:30 p.m. with the very moving production 

of Venetian Vespers. 


Vespers is most commonly known in the Catholic Church as a sunset 

prayer service devoted to singing, quiet contemplation and prayer. 

Venice of the 17th century was enormously prosperous and the 

Church had one of its most important and beautiful Basilica’s there- 

St. Mark’s. Music was particularly strong at St. Mark’s. Two of the 

most famous conductors associated with St. Mark’s will be <strong>featured</strong> – 

Monteverdi and Vivaldi. 

Monteverdi was the conductor of St. Mark’s in the early 17th century 

and wrote Vespers for the Virgin Mary in 1610. It is recognized as 

the most ambitious piece of sacred music up until the time of Bach. 

Several pieces from this composition will be performed with the 

UCF Chamber Singers and mezzo-soprano Samantha Barnes Daniel. 

Vespers services conclude with a performance of Magnificat which is 

the text from Luke 1:46-55. This is text spoken by the Virgin Mary 

upon her visitation of her cousin Elizabeth who is pregnant with John 

the Baptist. The Orlando Philharmonic will perform Vivaldi’s beautiful 

Magnificat. 

One final treat will be the Philharmonic’s performance of Vivaldi’s 

Concerto for Piccolo featuring Sandra del Cid-Davies on piccolo. 

Tickets to this very special concert are $20 and are now available at 

Imagination Realty or The <strong>Celebration</strong> Foundation offices. It will be 

performed at Community Presbyterian Church. Season tickets are also 

now available for $80 and include five performances including The 

Notre Dame Glee Club and Brooklyn Rider. For further information,

This concert also marks the last time we will welcome the 

Philharmonic’s Music Director Christopher Wilkens to <strong>Celebration</strong>. 

Maestro Wilkens is leaving the Philharmonic at the end of this season. 

He has brought an exciting mix of beautiful classical music to 

<strong>Celebration</strong> over the past eight years and we will sorely miss him.

mixed crowd of original residents and 

more recent transplants to the community.

in the hearts of <strong>Celebration</strong> residents 

looking for a way to honor and

The vision of the Memorial Garden is to enable reflection on 

<strong>Celebration</strong>’s concern for family, creative beauty, harmony and 

reverence for life. This has been carried out by the use of beautiful 

landscaping, walking paths and private rest areas inviting reflection. 

Even the circular design evokes thoughts of the circle of life.

<strong>Celebration</strong> K-8 middle school students cleaned, pressed and folded 

hundreds of items of uniform clothing in Home Economics. 

<strong>Celebration</strong> parents have embraced the uniform recycling program 

and the amount of clothing was more than the Spirit Closet could use. 

Kathleen Sipio thought what better way to share the bounty than to 

help Westside K-8 and sent 28 boxes of clean clothing to the school.

The Memorial Garden’s focal point is the area where 12 pillars have 

been erected. Each pillar displays tiles etched with the names of 

former <strong>Celebration</strong> residents, friends and family members who are 

no longer with us. 

The <strong>Celebration</strong> Foundations serves as caretaker of the Garden and 

coordinates orders for engraved tiles. Tiles bear the name of the person 

as well as their dates of birth and death. Tiles are available for a $275 

donation to the <strong>Celebration</strong> Foundation and are normally installed 

within one month from the time the order and payment are received. 

The Foundation will be planning a spring memorial service in the 

Garden. If you would like to be involved in envisioning the memorial

School Buzz 

CHS Thespian Troupe Excels at District 

Theatre Performance Assessments 

The <strong>Celebration</strong> High School (CHS) Thespian Troupe 5913 did not 

waste any time kicking into high gear with the start of the new school 

year. Their hard work paid off big at the first competition of the year, 

the District XI Theatre Performance Assessments, held at Saint Cloud 

High School in late 

October. Forty-three CHS 

students prepared a total 

of 24 competition entries 

and brought home 19 

medals, 10 Superior ratings 

and 9 Excellent ratings. 

A highlight of the competition was 

having two of the entries receive 

first runner up for “Best of Show”. 

This is a huge accomplishment as 

the judges select this award from 

all of the entries they have seen the 

entire day. The large group musical, 

They Both Reached for the Gun from 

the musical Chicago, was named first 

runner up with straight superior 

ratings from all three judges. 

This large group was choreographed by senior Ali Darr and junior 

Kathryn Churchwell, and also included company members Alex 

Adamany, Nicholas Bowers, Shannon Drummond, Sam Goldman, 

Jhoanny Gonzalez, Luis Landa, Marissa McKenzie, Liam Munn, 

Zoe Rosas, Luis Vazquez, Rafi Wagoner and Matt Weber. The duet 

acting scene from Angels in America: Millenium Approaches also 

received first runner up with straight superior ratings, performed by 

senior Sam Goldman and junior Liam Munn. Both of these entries will 

be taken to the State Thespian Festival in March to compete, as well 

as the musical duet We Can Do It from The Producers, performed by 

seniors Nicholas Bowers and Luis Landa, the solo The Music Still Plays 

On from A New Brain, performed by senior Jhoanny Gonzalez, and 

the contrasting monologues from Puzzle Piece and Strings Attached 

performed by senior Alex Adamany. Each year five student-directed 

scenes are selected to represent District XI at States, and junior 

Shannon Saltzsider was selected with her scene from The Odd Couple. 

Additional students who qualified to attend the State Thespian Festival 

by earning a superior rating in an event included Sean Bowers, Zach 

Britt, and Morgan Tessler. In total, 18 students will attend from CHS. 

In addition to qualifying for 

States, three CHS students 

deserve special recognition.

Inaugural <strong>Celebration</strong> PTSA Golf Tournament 

a Big Success 

The <strong>Celebration</strong> High 

School Parent Teacher 

Student Association 

(PTSA) hosted its inaugural 

Golf Tournament 

on Sat., Nov. 2 at the 

<strong>Celebration</strong> Golf Club. 

Approximately 80 golfers 

participated, and though 

the weather didn’t cooperate, 

it didn’t dampen 

the spirit of the event, 

which was to raise funds 

for the CHS PTSA. The PTSA works hard all school year to support 

many important events at the school. This includes many teacher 

recognition events, the Storm 101 Carnival, the senior class picnic 

and banquet, just to name a few!
