STUDENT LIFE Student Council: Community Involvement Staff Writer: Aleena Faisal Student Council is trying to help the community by calling some orphanage centers and asking them how we can help them. Members have also been looking into finding out if we Caring for the Community: Student Council President, Joshua Seo, says that he has big plans to get out school more linked with our community! Have any suggestions for Student Council E-mail us at student.council@rischool.org! can vounteer. If this is possible, we will have RIS students visit orphanages on several occasions. We want your ideas! We are thinking about students' safety and about helping the students learn about character education. We want to teach children at orphanages as well as RIS students the character education words and ideas in an easier way. We are also planning to start a fundraiser to collect funds so that we can make a donation to orphanages and other places that are in need. 4 Student Problems Staff Writer: Humayra Sharipova As students, it is natural that many people have student problems. We students can sometimes be under a lot of stress! I went out into our school to survey and check out what our biggest student problems are these days. Let's see what some hot issues are at RIS and see if we can fix them! If you have an idea for how to help this student problem, please write to student council or a letter to the editor of our newszine! Problem One: A big concern from grade 5 to 8 students is that our MacBooks have a limited time for us to work, and sometimes the students need extra time to work on their homework. They really need this great technology! They should be able to use it! For grade 2-4 students, our iPads only slide and unlock. No limited time; we can open our iPads whenever we want! Is this fair Solution One: One idea is that the MacBooks should open at least at 8 a.m. Also, maybe having a "lockout time" isn't a good idea since our MS students have so much homework. Any other ideas Write us! Problem Two: The second biggest problem at RIS for students is that grades 3-8 cannot eat second break snack. As you know, grades 1 and 2 can eat it. Sometimes they even get muffins for their second snack and not fruit! Solution Two: One way to solve this is to give grades 3-8 a snack during second break. It could even be optional for students who don't want it! We could also change the snack times so that it isn't right after MS students' lunch. Again, if you have any other ideas, write us. Please! Problem Three: Another hot issue in our student body is that middle schoolers have too much homework. Here are few ideas on the subjects of their homework every night: Math, Social Studies, Reader's Workshop, Writer's Workshop, ELA, and Science. Every day! Is this too much Solution Three: Teachers give less homework to our students! How else can we fix this If you have an idea, tell us so that we can spread the news! **Survey Time** I surveyed our teachers and students about these problems. Let's hear what people said! Ms. Keeney: If students had problems, and if they came to me, I would try to fix them. Ms. Alison: Well, I'd just remind them that students and teachers are here for you, right Even if it's a problem at school or it's a problem at home, we can solve it.
