STORY LINES
• The Wolves come off of a 107-87 smashing of Salem International in the first
game of the Mom Reeves Tournament, while Georgia College beat Lee 72-59.
• The 107 points is Newberry’s most in a season opener since a 106-81 win over
now-defunct Friendship College in the first game ever played here in Eleazer Arena
on Nov. 20, 1981.
• Savad Garner (23 pts, 11reb) and Chris Reynolds (21pts, 11reb) led Newberry in
the win with double-doubles.
• Demarkus Smith scored 18 and Dondray Walker scored 14. Quayshun Hawkins
netts 12 points and dished out 8 assists. It was all three players’ collegiate debut.
• Georgia College was led in its win by 19 points from Ryan Aquino and 18 points
from Jared Holmes. Tarrance Chatman scored 10 off the bench.
• All 10 South Atlantic Conference teams played last night, and Newberry was
one of only three to win its season opener along with No. 5 Lincoln Memorial and
Anderson, which was an Elite Eight team last season.
• This is the fifth all-time meeting between the two teams. Georgia College has
a 4-0 lead in the series, sweeping home-and-home series in both 2004 and 2009.
• Of note, Georgia College starting point guard JP Davis played at Newberry in
2009-10, averaging 4.5 pts and 2.7 assists per game. He scored 10 points for the
scarlet and gray in the two games against the Bobcats
UP NEXT
Newberry returns to action on Tuesday night, hosting North Georgia. The Saints
are 1-0 after a 75-66 home win over Brevard last night. They played 0-1 Mars Hill
earlier today.
Georgia College plays in the Queens Classic in Charlotte next weekend.
HEAD COACH DAVE DAVIS
Dave Davis was introduced as the College’s 24th men’s basketball
coach in a press conference on campus Monday, April 26, 2010.
Davis had previously served as head men’s basketball coach at Pfeiffer
University for the past 14 seasons.
In his 14 seasons at Pfeiffer, Davis accumulated a record of 284-
124 (.696) including 21 championships, NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen
appearances in 2000 and 2004 and an NCAA Elite Eight appearance
in 2004.
Davis’ Pfeiffer teams have averaged over 20 wins per season and
rank in the top 5 in wins since 1990 in all of NCAA Division II basketball.
Davis was named the CVAC Coach of the Year in 1998, 1999 and
2004. He was also named the NCAA East Regional Coach of the Year
in 2004.
Davis’ 2009-10 Pfeiffer team finished as the highest scoring team
in Division II at 103.1 points per game and was ranked third nationally
in three-pointers per game (10.6) and steals per game (11.2), while
ranking fifth in the country in three-point field goal percentage (42.3%).
Prior to being named head coach at Pfeiffer, Davis was the head coach at Barton College
where the team of his own recruits won a record 25 games. He received his first head coaching
position at his alma mater, Warren Wilson College, where he led the Owls to their highest win
total in 15 years.
All told, Davis has a record of 343-200 (.632) in 19 years as a collegiate head coach.
Davis earned his bachelor’s degree from Warren Wilson in 1983, and a master’s degree from
Gardner-Webb in 1993. As a player for the Owls, he was a 4-year starter and was on two Conference
Championship teams. He is Warren Wilson’s all-time assist leader.
Davis has an impressive list of former assistant coaches including seven Division I coaches,
headlined by Purdue head coach Matt Painter, Charlotte associate head coach Rob Moxley, Charlotte
assistant coach Rob Perron and Boston Celtics assistant coach Michael Longabardi.
at Pfeiffer which he is working on continuing at Newberry. After
13 wins last season, Davis now has 356 wins entering his 21st
season.
THANKS FOR THE BALL!
A hallmark of Newberry’s “all out, all the time” style is defensive
pressure. Making your opponent make mistakes can only help
yourself.
That harrassment helped Newberry force 24.4 turnovers per
game and have a plus-1.7 turnover margin.
At Carson-Newman, the Wolves set what may be an unofficial
SAC record, as C-N turned the ball over 39 times, a rate of
nearly a turnover per minute.
At 12.7 steals per game, the Wolves finished second nationally
in that category
The SAC record for steals per game average is 13.68, set by
Mars Hill in 2008-09 (383 steals in 28 games).
DONATING AT THE CHARITY STRIPE
In 2010-11, the Wolves obliterated the South Atlantic Conference
record for the most free throws attempted in a season, with
900 attempts at the free throw stripe in 27 games.
The previous record was 863 attempts in 34 games by the
2006-07 Wingate squad.
Newberry also set the SAC record for made free throws, with
599 made free throws, breaking the 2006-07 Wingate team’s record
of 568.
Newberry’s opponents also set the SAC record for free throws
made (649, old record was 524), and attempts (880, old record
790). The opponents’ free throw percentage was also a SAC record
(.738, old record .731).
ON THE BOARDS
Newberry’s all-out style requires the players to crash the boards
on missed shots, and with that will come some gaudy numbers.
The Wolves tied a SAC record for most rebounds in a season
with 43.6 rebounds per game. The 2009-10 Lincoln Memorial
team also had 43.6 rpg.
Newberry’s average of 17.9 offensive rebounds per game also
broke the previous SAC record of 16.07 orpg set by the 2009-10
Mars Hill squad.
TICKLING THE TWINE
While the win-loss record wasn’t in Newberry’s favor all of the
time, the Wolves continued to put on an impressive offensive
display in 2010-11, ranking sixth nationally in points per game
at the end of the season.
