Kazimierz Nowak<br />
azimierz Nowak, MD, PhD, was born in Andrychow in<br />
K<br />
southern Poland. The first 30 years of his life were<br />
closely connected with Krakow, where in 1962 he graduated<br />
from the Krakow Medical Academy (later restored to its original<br />
status of Collegium Medicum of the Jagiellonian University).<br />
He then worked for five years in the Department of<br />
Pediatric Surgery at the Institute of Pediatrics in Krakow. In<br />
1968 he spent a year in Boston and New York as a Fulbright<br />
Scholar. In 1969 he arrived in Great Britain, where for three years he worked in pediatric surgery,<br />
later in general surgery and from 1980 in general medical practice. In the UK, he<br />
earned several postgraduate degrees, including FRCS (Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons,<br />
Edinburgh), MPhil (Master of Philosophy, University of London) and PhD (Polish<br />
University Abroad, London).<br />
In the ‘90s, Dr.Nowak was President of the Polish Medical Association (established in 1944)<br />
in London for 10 years. Since1991 he has been closely involved in initiating and developing<br />
closer relations between Poland and its medical diaspora.. He is author of the extensive memorandum<br />
– “Projekt Centrum Polonia Medyczna Swiata”, designed to combine enormous potential<br />
of the Polish medical diaspora for the benefit of the Polish healthcare. He was an<br />
initiator of the idea, a founder and the first President (1994 – 1996). of the Federation of Polish<br />
Medical Organisations Abroad. He has been actively involved in the work of a number of<br />
Polish émigré organisations, such as the Federation of Poles in Great Britain, Polish Society<br />
of Arts and Sciences Abroad, Polish Social and Cultural Centre in London and others. He has<br />
also been active in British medical organizations – as Council Member of the prestigious<br />
Osler Club of London and as member of The Harveian Society.<br />
Dr.Nowak is the author of numerous publications on clinical medicine as well as issues relevant<br />
to philosophy, emigration, sociology, aesthetics and politics.
