Distance Running
AIMS
Children’s Series
The second event in the AIMS
Children’s Series was held in the
Rwandan capital of Kigali on 11 May
in conjunction with the Kigali Peace
Marathon. Entries were oversubscribed
as 1700 children took
part but only 1250 could be
registered.
In what was effectively a fantastic
curtain-raiser for the Marathon,
1700 children aged from 9-13
started from within the stadium just
before the top athletes. They
completed a separate lap on the
surrounding roads before reentering
the stadium for the final
The next edition of Distance
Running will be published in
October, covering races held from
30 June – 30 September. The
advertising and editorial deadlines
will be on 9 September.
300m on the track. Medals and T-
shirts sponsored by AIMS were
given to all participants and awards
were presented to the top 15 girls
and boys, courtesy of ASICS and
the “Runners help runners”
programme conducted at the Tokyo
Marathon.
Runners’
stampede
Many AIMS member races are
reporting increasing numbers in
their races. Many others have fixed
a limit on the number of entries
they accept, and this number has
been reached earlier than ever
before. Stockholm has operated a
17,000 limit for the last couple of
years, but fills it at an earlier date
each year. Berlin this year reached
their 40,000 limit four months
before their 28 September race
date. Likewise, Gold Coast Airport
Marathon in Australia and Dresdner
Kleinwort Frankfurt Marathon all
report larger entries than in
previous years. Now would seem to
be the time to promote new
events, borne out by the
experience of the Marathon Alpes
Maritimes Nice-Cannes, to be held
along the French Riviera on 9
November, which has already
accepted 7000 entries of an
anticipated 10,000.
New AIMS Members
■ The New Jersey Marathon was held for the
twelfth time on 4 May. The race attracts 1500 men
and 700 women, of whom in the last edition 35
represented 11 foreign countries. Records stand to
Mike Harrison (USA) at 2:29:19 and Dorian Meyer
(USA) at 2:51:43
■ The Wachau Marathon has been held for 11
years, with the next edition due on 14 September,
and draws 5600 runners, half of them women.
There are 650 foreign runners in the field,
representing 47 countries. Course records are held
by J Rotich at 2:12:32 and K Symanska at 2:33:33
■ The Dam tot Damloop is held over the
distance of 10 miles (16093.4m) on a point-topoint
course from Central Amsterdam to Zandam,
with a long tunnel in the early stages of the race.
It has been held for the last 23 years and course
records stand to Ingrid Kristiansen (50:31) and Paul
Koech (44:45). A total of 35,000 runners take part,
split 60% men, 40% women, with around 100
foreign runners from 19 countries. The next race
will be on 21 September.
■ The Philadelphia Marathon which will next
be run on 22 November, has been held for the
last 14 years and attracts around 6000 runners
split almost evenly between men and women and
including 500 foreign runners from 25 countries
■ The Colombo Marathon has been held on
the first Sunday in October for the last eight
years with steadily growing numbers. 600 men
and 150 women participate in this picturesque
event, which traces a route north from the Sri
Lankan capital through fishing villages. Foreign
participation amounts to 100 runners from 4
countries.
■ The Douro Valley Half Marathon has been
held for the last 5 years and attracts around 3200
runners (2500 men, 700 women), including 400
foreign runners from 12 countries. Records stand
to Benson Olenakeri (KEN) at 1:03:58 and Anne
Bererwe (KEN) at 1:12:01. It will next be held on 12
October.
New Associates
■ Held for the last two years in April the
Alexander the Great Marathon attracts 800 men
and 200 women, of whom about 25% are foreign
runners, from 15 countries. Records are held by
Moses Arusei at 2:11:35 and Souad Ait Salem at
2:28:22
■ A sister event to the Lake Tahoe Marathon, the
Maui Oceanfront Marathon takes place for the
first time on 25 January 2009.
■ The Bass Pro Shops Springfield Marathon has
been held for only one year, and this year will
take place on 2 November, but the associated half
marathon event has been run for the last 27 years.
The first marathon edition attracted 300 runners
evenly split between men and women, with six
foreign runners coming from three countries.
■ The Nightmarathon is held in early June and is
run between two small Italian towns at the head
of the Adriatic Sea, just east of Venice. The race
starts from Cavallino and after a 13km loop to the
west the half marathon runners head straight for
the seafront town of Jesolo. Marathon runners
bypass the finish area and complete the second
half of the race with a loop to the east before
returning to Jesolo.
■ The Maraton Expo Zaragoza El Corte Ingles
has been held once before with winners being
Peter Korir (KEN) in 2:12:31 and Elena Moreno (ESP)
in 2:37:21. Apart from them, 1206 men and 41
women took part, including 14 foreigners
representing 6 countries. This year’s edition will be
on 28 September.
