The public focus of this joint “World Marathon Majors” series is the award of $500,000 each to the best male and best female performers in their races, judged over a two-year period. Performances in World Championship and Olympic Games’ Marathons may also be taken into consideration. London Chicago and New York have resigned membership of AIMS as a result, although Boston and Berlin have not done so. Big-budget races that would otherwise compete against each other for the world’s top runners see advantages in managing this process more cooperatively. Less clear is why some of these feel it necessary to distance themselves from co-operative arrangements with smaller, noncompeting races which form the membership of AIMS. There is great competition for the title “the best marathon in the world”, but there is no agreed formula by which to form such a judgement. Big races emphasise their size. Rich races emphasise their wealth. Apart from a few top runners, to whom the spoils fall, any ordinary marathon runner knows that the best marathon in the world is the one they like best. It is an entirely subjective judgement based upon the experience the particular race offers. Within AIMS there are 230 members, each of which offers a different experience (for glimpses of such, just flick through this magazine) and each of which is striving to improve its service and standing. It is very unfortunate that a few of the market leaders in the sport are signalling disinterest in the full range of qualities and events that distance running has to offer, and that the running world in future will be unable to speak with one voice. New AIMS Members ■ Maraton Internacional de Guadalajara (MEX) has been held for 22 years, with best performances from Eliseo Garcia (2:16:18) Guadalupe Loma (2:38:52). Currently 2000 men and 440 women participate, coming from 4 countries ■ Zermatt Marathon (SUI) is an alpine event with breathtaking views of the Matterhorn almost throughout. It has been held for the last four years. Best times recorded have been 3:04:19 (men) and 3:45:24 (women). The race attracts 241 runners from 18 countries. New Associate Members ■ Quito Ultimas 15km (ECU) joined just before the latest race held on 4 June (see results section). ■ La Ruta de las Igelsias (ECU) was held for the first time on 15 October 2005, this race had 1763 runners departing from the Basilico de Quito at 19.00, in along a torchlit route that passed by 10 churches during the first 4km. The race finishes in the north of the city at the Parque La Carolina. Winners were locals Franklin Tenorio (30:37 and Rosa Chacha (35:35) The next edition of Distance Running will be published in October, covering races held from July-September.
