The 36th IAAF World Cross Country
Championships take place in
Holyrood Park, Edinburgh on 30
March 2008, marking the 30th
anniversary of the last World Cross
Country Championships to be
hosted in Scotland, held in
Bellahouston Park, Glasgow in 1978.
The continuing popularity of cross
country is indicated by Edinburgh
playing host to a record number of
countries from every continent – and
a crowd of up to 10,000 - in the
weekend’s showcase event, shown
live by BBC television.
VisitScotland spokesman, Ben Carter,
said; “Edinburgh provides a
breathtaking backdrop and skyline
for the cross country championships.
Edinburgh is a beautiful city with
superb facilities”.
Edinburgh staged the European
Cross Country Championships at the
Holyrood Park venue in 2003, an
event which is still widely regarded
as being the best ever in the 20 year
history of that event. This helped to
create a lasting legacy for cross
country running in Scotland.
