Saturday 6 September 2008 The race: The 8th Stockholm Half Marathon will take place Saturday 6 September 2008. Start at 16.30. Exclusive commemorative medal to all finishers. The course: The Stockholm Half Marathon is run on an inspiring and fast course through central Stockholm. The difference between the highest and the lowest point of the course is 18 meters. Start outside the Royal Palace, finish in the city park ”Kungsträdgården”. The runners: In 2007 a record number of 7,054 runners from 22 countries entered the race. The maximum running time is 2 hours and 45 minutes. Weather conditions: Average temperature for the first week of September is 15 degrees centigrade. KENENISA BEKELE (LEFT) OF ETHIOPIA THE EVENTUAL WINNER WITH JOSEPH EBUYA (CENTRE) OF KENYA AND HASAN MAHBOOB (RIGHT) OF BAHRAIN IN THE MEN'S ELITE RACE Then defending champion Zersenay Tadese launched a sustained drive which pulled Kenyans Leonard Komon and Joseph Ebuya clear with him. Bekele responded, and effortlessly slipped in among them. Tadese made valiant efforts to break the others and climbing the hill on the fourth lap it looked like he had dropped the Kenyan pair, but they closed up again on the downhill. Bekele was content to take the back seat for a while, but took the lead early on the sixth and last lap and dropped Ebuya in doing so. As he approached the hill for the last time Bekele was already building a winning lead as the 20-year old Komon struggled to maintain contact. Tadese, who had led most of the race, professed himself content with third: “a bronze medal for my country is still important to me”. Of his earlier trouble Bekele said “It was near the beginning and I knew it would make the rest of the race tough. I had to focus a great deal but I controlled my pace.” He had also suffered travel delays, arriving the day before the race, and an upset stomach overnight. Behind him the Ethiopian team challenge failed to materialise, and Komon led Kenya to an emphatic win. SENIOR WOMEN Dibaba drives from behind Tirunesh Dibaba’s win put her alongside her cousin Derartu Tulu and Lynne Jennings of USA as a three-time winner, but it hadn’t looked very likely for most of the race. Seeing her 17-year old sister Genzebe win from behind may have encouraged her to hold back until the late stages of the race, when she shot from fourth to first in the space of a few hundred metres. Priscah Jepleting led for much of the first two laps as the lead group diminished but remained large. Mestawet Tufa and Gelete Burka then took up the running and after the third lap seemed to have only the Kenyan junior talent Linet Masai for company. But Dibaba was only a couple of seconds further back, and later said that a stitch had made her fall back “but I recovered from that and was able to move to the front.” It wasn’t quite so simple, as Gelete Burka forged a significant lead during the last lap but in dropping Tufa and Masai provided convenient targets for Dibaba. Masai fought back alongside the charging Dibaba as Tufa caught Burka and all four were together approaching the hill with 400m to go. But Burka was broken, losing a further two places in the finish straight, and Dibaba quickly pushed clear of Tufa to win in the same manner and by the same margin as her kid sister had done earlier. She and Tufa led Ethiopia to the team title for the seventh consecutive year but, led in by Masai, the Kenyan women pressed them all the way. JUNIOR MEN Track speed takes it World Junior 10,000m champion Ibrahim Jeilan coped with the short sharp ascents on the longer laps and used the downslope to launch a blistering finish which won him the title. With the ground softened up by the previous day’s races and the Junior Women just half an hour before them, several athletes fell as the field converged on the first bend.
