The Community Foundation’s 21st fiscal year was anything but ordinary. On June 1, 2011, two months into the year, a tornado wreaked havoc in 19 communities in western and central Massachusetts, leaving many homes and buildings destroyed, including those of nonprofits providing critical services in devastated neighborhoods. Within 48 hours, the Foundation designated $50,000 for a Tornado Relief Fund for Western Massachusetts which, thanks to the mobilizing effort of the Foundation and other community organizations, businesses and leaders, made grants of over $230,000 to nonprofits affected or assisting those affected. (See page 8 for more about the tornado fund.) The Foundation’s role as one of the leading participants in the City to City program, assembling Springfield’s leadership to visit other comparable cities, provided similar confirmation of the Foundation’s ability to play a leading role in the community. Paul Schnaittacher The Foundation has also been an active participant in (and the fiscal home of) the Reading Success by Fourth Grade funding collaborative, initiated by the Davis Foundation, seeking to ensure that 80% of Springfield’s children will score at the proficiency level or above on the 3rd grade Reading MCAS test. So far, over $1 million has been committed to the collaborative. Meanwhile, the Foundation’s core programs continued to have a significant impact on the region. More than $2.2 million in financial aid was awarded to over 840 students from one of the largest scholarship/loan programs in the country. And the two cycles of the competitive grant program awarded $1.4 million to 163 charitable projects in all three counties of the Pioneer Valley. Additionally, grants of more than $4.1 million were made to charities from donor directed funds. All this was made possible by distributions from the 550 charitable funds for which the Foundation provides a home and by $125,000 in additional operating support. A grand total of $8.3 million in gift support was received during the year from the citizens of the Pioneer Valley, whose generosity was among the most extraordinary aspects of the year. We continue to be grateful for the support of the region. Finally, shortly after the year ended, Ron Ancrum, the Foundation’s President for the last three years, departed to return to his home in Boston, leaving with our best wishes and thanks for his service. Kent Faerber, President of the Foundation from 1999–2009, has agreed to serve as President on an interim basis while a search for a permanent successor is conducted. Peter J.
