Nottingham Castle Nottingham Castle has a rich, turbulent and intriguing history waiting to be explored. Many people think of Nottingham Castle and see local legend Robin Hood and his arch-enemy the Sheriff of Nottingham in his medieval stronghold. Art at the Castle The long gallery houses an outstanding fine art collection spanning the last 650 years. The collection includes work by local artists. Museum collections In 1878 the Castle became the first municipal art museum in the country outside of London. The collections include no less than 15 centuries of Nottingham history, the world renowned Felix Joseph collection of Jasperware, medieval alabasters, textiles from around the world, the Mercian Regiment Museum Collection and a large collection of decorative arts including glass, silver and jewellery. Grounds & Gardens The Castle is situated in 6 acres of beautiful Victorian inspired gardens. With its magnificent bandstand boasting spectacular views of the <strong>City</strong> and beyond. History • 1067 William the Conqueror built the very first Castle • 1150 – 1189 Henry II rebuilt parts of the Castle in stone • 1194 The Castle was besieged by Richard the Lionheart • 1331 Roger Mortimer was dragged out of the Castle to face trial for the murder of Edward II • 1346 King David II of Scotland was held prisoner here • 1485 Richard III set off to Bosworth where he died in battle • 1642 Charles I raised his standard to start the English Civil War • 1651 The remains of the Castle were demolished • 1678 A Palace was built here by the first Duke of Newcastle • 1831 The Ducal Palace was burnt down in the Reform Act Riots • 1878 The building was opened as a museum &art gallery Events & Activities The Castle hosts many enjoyable events & activities all year round, including tours, talks, outdoor & indoor theater performances, Robin Hood events, family activities, festivals & fairs.
