Professional development Our new CPD series on Outstanding Literacy Leadership is an innovative programme for Specialist Literacy Leaders embedded in the latest research and in line with the new curriculum. It helps schools meet their staff development needs in literacy leadership and is focussed on improving literacy outcomes for specific under-achieving groups. The challenge In the context of curriculum and assessment flux, combined with changes in levels of support from Local Authorities and in school networks, it is increasingly challenging for schools to source professional development tailored to their specific needs. Our new offer recognises this and provides flexibility for schools to customise the training to meet their needs while encouraging teachers to test new approaches and examine the evidence. Research shows that effective professional development immerses teachers in enquiry, questioning and experimentation, but must also be connected to their own practice. Our Outstanding Literacy Leadership training equips specialist literacy leaders with strategies to enhance their own learning, while focusing on local school and pupil needs. Our Outstanding Literacy Leadership training is: Effective: • Builds on known criteria for effective professional development • Addresses the teaching of specific curriculum content • Aligns with school priorities and goals • Emphasises collaboration within and between schools – Sir Michael Wilshaw, Chief Inspector of Schools for England: “[…] I would actually force schools to join clusters.” • Grows a research-oriented approach Sustainable: • Takes place over an extended period (at least half a term) so approaches are tested and evidence collected • Involves more than one teacher from each school so ideas are shared and practice is jointly improved • Supports middle leaders to lead teaching and learning with strategic insight • Builds a learning community providing structure and content for a whole-school action research approach “Secondary schools should strengthen whole-school literacy work across all departments to ensure that students extend and consolidate their literacy skills in all appropriate contexts.” Ofsted, Moving English Forward, 2012 Celebrate working with us by purchasing a BookBench for your school foyer or playground when you sign up for our professional development training. Professional development Outstanding Literacy Leadership series Improving boys’ literacy: strategies for success Our first training in the series takes a national issue - the gender gap in literacy attainment - and enables primary schools to find specific solutions depending on how this issue affects their school community. Training takes place over three days spread across at least one term. There is time to test new approaches and gather valuable evidence. Clusters of schools jointly commission the offer.
