City <strong>of</strong> London S<strong>in</strong>fonia<br />
Firmly established as one <strong>of</strong> the UK’s lead<strong>in</strong>g chamber orchestras, City <strong>of</strong> London<br />
S<strong>in</strong>fonia (CLS), was founded <strong>in</strong> 1971 by the late Richard Hickox and celebrates its 40th<br />
anniversary this year. Led by Stephen Layton (Artistic Director & Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal Conductor)<br />
and Michael Coll<strong>in</strong>s (Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal Conductor), the Orchestra has earned a reputation<br />
for strong, dist<strong>in</strong>ctive programm<strong>in</strong>g, outstand<strong>in</strong>g performances and record<strong>in</strong>gs, and a<br />
passion for music featur<strong>in</strong>g the voice.<br />
Perform<strong>in</strong>g throughout the UK and abroad, CLS makes regular appearances at all the<br />
major London concert halls and venues, as well as St Paul’s Cathedral and other venues<br />
<strong>in</strong> the City <strong>of</strong> London. It has been resident orchestra at the capital’s popular Opera<br />
Holland Park s<strong>in</strong>ce 2004 and holds a long-stand<strong>in</strong>g residency <strong>in</strong> High Wycombe, as<br />
well as be<strong>in</strong>g a regular guest at major UK festivals. In addition the Orchestra performs<br />
lively ‘Crash, Bang, Wallop!’ family concerts <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g young listeners a lively and<br />
<strong>in</strong>teractive <strong>in</strong>troduction to classical music.<br />
This autumn the Orchestra launches ‘CLoSer’, a new concert series <strong>in</strong> East London,<br />
<strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g audiences a more <strong>in</strong>timate and <strong>in</strong>formal concert experience, as well as the<br />
chance to engage with its musicians away from the traditional concert hall sett<strong>in</strong>g. The<br />
Orchestra also embarks on a landmark UK concert tour <strong>in</strong> early 2012, <strong>in</strong> conjunction<br />
with the Scott Polar Research Institute, mark<strong>in</strong>g the centenary <strong>of</strong> Capta<strong>in</strong> Scott’s<br />
expedition to the South Pole through music, photography and prose.<br />
CLS has made over 100 record<strong>in</strong>gs, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a series <strong>of</strong> operas by Benjam<strong>in</strong> Britten<br />
on the Chandos label, and won a Grammy Award for Best Opera for its record<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>of</strong> Peter Grimes.<br />
The Orchestra’s ‘Meet the Music’ education and outreach programme, founded <strong>in</strong> 1988,<br />
was one <strong>of</strong> the first established by a UK orchestra. CLS musicians spend approximately<br />
100 days a year mak<strong>in</strong>g music with a wide range <strong>of</strong> groups, young and old, throughout<br />
the country, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a long stand<strong>in</strong>g residency at the world famous Great Ormond<br />
Street Hospital.<br />
Extend<strong>in</strong>g their <strong>in</strong>novative reach and approach, CLS musicians deliver pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />
skills tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for corporate bus<strong>in</strong>esses, <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g a creative approach to support<strong>in</strong>g<br />
achievement and performance. Founded <strong>in</strong> 2000, ‘Development through Music’ is a<br />
pioneer<strong>in</strong>g programme and one <strong>of</strong> the first <strong>of</strong> its k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong> the country.<br />
