Page 4 Residents must remember to maintain yard, building appearance Maintenance rules apply to all in SV Gordon Johnson Chief of Security The sun is shining, it has stopped raining, grass is growing and flowers are in bloom, and more time is spent outside in the fresh air. To some residents, yard work is therapeutic; to others, it is a pain in the backside. Whatever your take on gardening, remember that: Sudden Valley residents are all subject to a set of rules and guidelines pertaining to property maintenance and/ or upkeep. JULY 2006 Su d d e n Valley Vi e wS Summer reading provides long-term benefits Encourage kids to read during the summer School children are in the thick of their summer vacation, and overworked parents and kids can be heard breathing a huge sigh of relief! Sum- Ed u c a t i o n co l u m n lo r n a mu r p h y mer is a welcome respite from homework projects, assignments to do or monitor; great weather, camp, travel loom ahead. We all deserve our leisure, and some of that time can be used to introduce your child to some wonderful children’s literature. Most parents know that reading aloud to young children reaps many benefits, but when children learn to read themselves, it often happens that parents stop this joint activity and leave reading up to the child. Jim Trelease, author of The Read-Aloud Handbook, (Fifth Edition) (the sixth is in the works) argues that parents, especially fathers, and children, reap huge benefits from continuing or starting reading aloud with children. He even has tips on how to read aloud to teenagers and dealing with the lure of television and computer games! Trelease points out that the majority of children learn to read, but as they mature, fewer and fewer actually do it for pleasure. He cites the 1985 report, “Becoming a Nation of Readers,” which stated: “The single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success Bookmobile and Saturday Storytime come to Sudden Valley on July 15 Special summer activities offered through WCLS Kathleen Neece Friends of Whatcom County Bookmobile Children will enjoy Barbara Craigie, our extraordinary storyteller guest at the Storyteller Saturday on July 15. Barbara’s specialty is folk and book-related tales, read in an interactive style, and she’ll have some animal stories in honor of this year’s summer reading club theme. Her target ages will be 6 to 10 years old, but everyone is welcome. Please join us just outside the Bookmobile in Sudden Valey Village on July 15 at 3 p.m. There will be a few chairs for adults. Children may want to bring a pillow or cushion. Children under 8 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Light refreshments will be provided. The event will be cancelled if it rains. All ages can celebrate summer reading this year with activities and a lot of great prizes! • Paws, Claws Scales and Tales is the children’s club theme and includes craft kits to take home, and weekly prizes. • Creature Feature provides venues for teens to share in reading is reading aloud to children,” (Trelease, p. 2). Parents may wonder how listening to someone else read can help a child’s own reading. Doesn’t the child need to be doing her own reading to actually get better at it? Also, by choosing books that are exciting and well written, both parents and children share in a pleasurable activity. Some parents wonder about the value of reading novels/fiction. Wouldn’t it be more beneficial to read factual books? Trelease argues that fiction is more likely to hold a child’s interest -- we all love a good story, don’t we? Fiction provides escape, emotional release, and allows us a glimpse into the private lives of others. It can even provide guidance regarding our own lives. As Trelease, says, literature can educate our hearts as well as our brains. Another consideration is the level of books for reading aloud. Most children have a “listening level” that is considerably above that of their reading level. So even if a child reads at the second grade level, say, chances are she can understand fourth grade level or higher. We’ve probably all gone into the library unsure of what choices to make. One of the best aspects of The Read-Aloud Handbook is its section of over 100 pages with fiction titles, abstracts, and age levels. If you can’t get a hold of Trelease’s book, (or want to wait until the sixth edition is available), his Internet home page is packed with current information related to children’s literacy, and you can Google several other web sites that will put you in touch with many good titles. I wish you all a great summer with exciting journeys that can be taken with literature!
