TE MANA & MFISH
join forces
With six officers from the
Ministry of Fisheries embarked,
the frigate TE
MANA spent a week in
August patrolling amongst the fi shing
fl eet on the Hoki grounds off the West
Coast of the South Island. Maritime
Component Commander, CDRE Jack
Steer said “This has been a very
successful multi-agency operation;
TE MANA facilitated the boarding of
commercial fi shing vessels by MFish
officers, to ensure compliance with
Fisheries legislation. The operation
effectively demonstrated the success
of a multi-agency approach to the management
of resources and the maintenance
of security within our EEZ.”
TE MANA berthed at Victoria Wharf,
Dunedin on Saturday 27 August, where
she joined HMAS MELBOURNE, already
visiting that city. The ships were open to
the public in Dunedin; both ships sailed
A boarding party from TE MANA, with MFish
boarding officers, visits the SURESTE 707,
during a routine fisheries inspection of vessels
fishing for Hoki
the South Island on
KIWI sailed on 8 August from
Lyttelton for Pegasus Bay to look for the wreckage
of an aircraft reported to have ditched into
the sea near Amberley Beach, north of Christchurch.
At the request of the Civil Aviation Authority, KIWI,
under the command of LTCDR Drew RNZNVR,
used her Side Scan Sonar to look for contacts on
the sea floor in an attempt to locate any wreckage
from the missing aircraft. In the event the search
proved unsuccessful after divers confirmed various
contacts as rocks, and the aircraft wreckage
was not found.
The operation was conducted at very short
notice, but illustrated the responsiveness of the
RNZNVR personnel and the capability of KIWI with
her MCM equipment.
