Special
An interview with the boys and girls of Klub 7
After some trouble with illegal painting on
moving targets, a crew from Halle/Saale took on
another name; Since there were seven members finding
a name was easy, they called themselves Klub 7.
Seven years later the crew occupation has changed
and the number seven has become more abstract,
like a code.
Who is in the Crew nowadays?
“Dani, Okay, Me, Low, Cash7 and Tower from Berlin.”
How did you start with graffiti/streetart?
“Most of us began doing graffiti in ‘93. The usual: at
first we saw New York magazines, started writing in
notebooks at school, began a Blackbook, from first tags
to the first bombings, Hall of Fame pieces and loose it
went. In 1999-04 came new technologies and tools:
stencils, brush, latexroller, chalk, acryl, stickers, posters
etc. That development was somewhat different for
each one of us. But the reason it all began with graffiti
is to a make a visual urban Sign-bombardment of the
public space. The street as a medium is something
we never take in doubt. Today the street is a large,
inspiring playground for us, our studio in which we
publish our painted pictures and pasted collages.“
“Me: On the street an action is always followed
by a reaction. One can playfully communicate.“
“There we are not there outside the other, that
play with one, it would become boring quickly.
Nevertheless you have a responsibility of that,
what you make out there. Sometimes you must act
sensitive, sometimes furious, otherwise the effect is lost.“
How important is it for you to be in a Crew, how does
it influence your work?
8
“It is one of the most important connections in our lives.
We are friends and have fun together. We develop
together, hold together and play together. The KLUB is
absolutely holy: a heart and a soul.
Each one of us has their own characteristic style, their
strong and weak points. Producing new creativity
from that again and again is what makes KLUB7. That
is what makes us strong.”
What is the most important characteristic of streetart
and graffiti for you?
“It’s about characteristic identity that appears in public
space. Making things and showing things.”
To quote BILD: “ I produce, therefore I am!”
Which artists influenced you?
“Primarily we influence and inspire each other. The
Berlin scene also has strong influence on us because
we have many friends there. In the streetart-scene
it’s: GOULD, PICTURE, BOXI, PABO, F*CK YOUR CREW,
AEM, CACTUS CREW, LINDA’S-EX to name, 6@rtist
and NOMAD. If it concerns writing, BLAZE and THIEF
momentarily have a strong influence on us, because
they are taking over Halle/Saale in Berlin-style! Our
influences change however. In 1999 it were painters
from Prague, like CODE, PUZE, CAKES, ROMEO and
PATHE21 that strongly inspired us. Pull that on the
basis of we however out of our characteristic crew.“
What do you do in everyday life?
“Most of us study design. The others are already artists,
freelancers and unemployed.”
What is your favorite music when you are making
graffiti/stickers?
“I really like THE DOORS if I am creative. Most of us
listen to electronic music: Aphex Twin, Autechre,
Erlend Oye, Yards of all ions, GusGus, internationally
pony Peter light, Pitchtuner, The streets, GRAFFITI07,
but also Isaac Hayes And Curtis Mayfield are good
too.“
The Two towers - Rotterdan, The Netherlands
At the opening of the cultural season in Rotterdam two towers
emerged. The battle of Antwerp vs. Rotterdam began. The Belgian
team had more players from the fine arts background and the Dutch
team was more graffiti based. Both towers became a huge visual
collage after three days af hard work, sweat and rain. Above you see
images of both towers.
City of names - Berlin, Germany
In August a group of 30 graffitiwriters and
street-artists from Berlin and other Europen cities,
built a small city with the help of interested
residents and neighbourhood kids. They built a
city of Letters and Names.
The project was organised by Zasd and Akim. It
was a simple idea; What would happen if graffiti
writers would build a city?
Project Steiger - The Netherlands
Text & photos by Ephameron
The idea was to put lit billboards on one side of
a small alley running next to the river Rotte,
because of the unsafe feeling the
residents had when walking there.
Hence, the project theme was: “safety”.
My artwork was chosen to be featured, along
with 17 other designs. It’s title is “Curfew”,
and it shows a night scene with a street in the
background, and a pair of arms gesturing at a
wristwatch. I thought it would be funny to draw
something about curfews, because I feel related
to the fear of walking somewhere at night. So
this raises a question: Maybe it’s better to stay
home after dark instead of feeling threatened by
the shadow of a stranger?
Still Living Life - Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Text & photos by SSLL
My friend Mike spotted a van outside that was in
need of some painting. The german owner
said it was okay, so within no time me and my
friends were painting the van. It was crazy. When
we were done painting we asked the
owner what he thought of the result. He liked
it all, except for the character that Afresh made on
the back of the van: “It iz tzu happie”.
We had fun the rest of the night with that phrase.
After the owner left, Nol started painting depressed
flowers and Afresh made another character
only this time in lovely happy pink. Mike climbed
on top of the van and painted the phrase ‘I’m not
happy’.”
