For fixed audience seating applications, Wenger also offers three models, suited for a wide variety of décors and budgets. Each features handcrafted, ergonomic styling with thick cushions and lumbar support for superior comfort. Options include donor plates, seat and aisle number plates and aisle lighting. At Prosper High School, Wenger’s Portable Audience Chairs are paired with Wenger’s Versalite platforms in their black box Stations, primarily to ensure their students would have a good makeup station available when traveling to competitions. But O’Neil has since found other uses for them, such as for the musical’s auxiliary makeup space or backstage for quick changes. “I didn’t realize when I got them how nice they were going to be,” he comments. “I like their size—the mirrors are large. The lights are bright enough that the kids can actually see and do makeup, and get a pretty good idea of what they look like.” They previously used lighted makeup stations from Wal-Mart. Students from Prosper High School, in rehearsal here, immediately turn to flipFORMS from Wenger to create any theatre set they need. theatre, which seats approximately 100 people. “They are both fantastic!” says O’Neil. Constructed of aircraft-grade aluminum frames, Versalite platforms feature interchangeable legs and ¾-inch plywood decks with a choice of five finish options. Decks secure together quickly and easily with integrated connectors and no loose parts. Versalite decks and legs can also be taken from the theatre and reconfigured for other purposes. Prosper High School uses their extra Versalite platforms throughout their school and other district buildings for a range of events, such as award ceremonies. For the school’s largest production—the musical in the main auditorium—Versalite helped create an extra dressing room and makeup area. “We were short of tables, so I set up some Versalite platforms as large tables in the black box area and used our Wenger Backstage Makeup Stations on them,” explains O’Neil. This saves time and money by eliminating the need for custom construction or specialized tradespeople. The University of Minnesota in Duluth, Minn., installed 30 Studio Makeup Stations when two locker rooms were renovated into makeup rooms. “These makeup stations elevate the space into a real professional working environment and that great feeling carries over to the work,” says Patricia Dennis, associate professor and head of the theatre department. “That’s been the biggest reaction from faculty and students.” Dennis believes the Studio Makeup Stations enable the necessary concentration for doing makeup properly, helping focus the attention of actors doing their own makeup and of the makeup artists. “As a teacher and someone who also executes makeup, that focus is one of the most important things,” she adds. 8 2010 THEATRE RESOURCES DIRECTORY www.wengercorp.com
“The mirror is great, almost oversized with plenty of visibility even when you turn your head,” comments Dennis. “Lighting is excellent—the low wattage bulbs give a beautiful illumination while giving off as little heat as possible.” She also appreciates the overhead shelf providing storage for the actor’s makeup kit or the makeup artist’s kit. For transporting and storing costumes, Wenger offers the Rack ‘n Roll Garment Rack, featuring a hanger bar, top and bottom shelves, and easy-rolling casters. It’s available in 4-foot and 6-foot lengths, and assembles or disassembles easily without tools. Prosper High School has three Rack ‘n Rolls, used primarily in the dressing rooms. “They are terrific!” declares O’Neil, who says their dressing rooms lack fixed places to theatres include acoustical shells, orchestra pit fillers, storage cabinets and director’s stands.
