SLIMLITE SLATE & QUARTZITE

SLIMLITE SLATE & QUARTZITE
HARMONIZING INNOVATION WITH
THE TIMELESS BEAUTY OF STONE
For thousands of years, natural stone has been admired for its ability
to add unmatched elegance to any design, and Daltile’s SlimLite Slate
and Quartzite bring this beauty to applications in which the weight and
thickness of natural stone may have traditionally limited these options.
SlimLite Slate and Quartzite are revolutionary new surfacing products
created by splitting raw material from actual slate and quartzite quarries
into very thin layers of stone. This thin layer is bonded to a fiberglass
backing, producing a strong, yet flexible piece of stone, making it an ideal
facade for installation over existing surfaces and remodels.
SlimLite Slate and Quartzite add to the list of several new products
featuring the SlimLite name. SlimLite products are designed with easy
handling, transportation and installation in mind, delivering the classic
elegance of tile and stone in a lighter, more sustainable format. Because
of their slim structure, the design opportunities with SlimLite products
are virtually limitless.
SlimLite products are at least 30% thinner and lighter than the standard
product, lowering transportation emissions and costs, as well as
producing less waste due to less packaging, without forgoing the beauty
of high-quality tile and stone.

THE SLIMLITE SLATE & QUARTZITE
DIFFERENCE
• SlimLite Slate and Quartzite weigh less than 0.5 lbs. per
square foot and are approximately 1/8" inch thick making
handling and transportation easier than ever before.
• SlimLite Slate and Quartzite can be cut with standard cutting
materials including tin snips, scissors or shears.
• Durability and flexibility allow SlimLite Slate and Quartzite to
be installed over surfaces including concrete, ceramic, wood,
metal, plywood, fiberglass, backer board, tile, dry wall, painted
surfaces, MDF, door skins, cabinetry, columns and beyond.
• SlimLite Slate and Quartzite afford users a more cost efficient
and less intrusive experience overall when you factor in
labor and materials. No labor is required to tear out existing
materials, as it’s directly applied to most surfaces, for less mess
and fewer jobsite hassles.
*Suitable for covered exterior walls in freezing and non-freezing climates when proper
PREPARATION
Important to make sure the surface on which the SlimLite Slate and Quartzite is applied
has been cleaned of any dirt, dust, grease, or any other substance that may hinder the
effectiveness of the adhesive.
ADHESIVES
The recommended and most durable adhesive for installing SlimLite Slate and Quartzite
is any adhesive with a polyurethane component.
The following have also been used and shown to be effective: premixed grout and
tile adhesive, epoxy, silicone, thick latex or acrylic latex type tile adhesive, or any
polyurethane wood glues.
Check the properties of any adhesive used to be certain the conditions that the SlimLite
Slate and Quartzite is installed in are covered under the adhesive’s guidelines.
CUTTING, GROUTING AND SEALING
SlimLite Slate and Quartzite can be easily cut into various shapes using scissors, tin
snips, metal sheers, a wet saw or table saw.
When installing SlimLite Slate and Quartzite you have the option of using grout joints or
butting the pieces against each other. Due to the minimal thickness of the product, it is
best if a minimal grout joint is used. Tests have shown that the most effective grout used
is a water-based epoxy grout.
SHADE VARIATIONS AND AESTHETIC CLASSIFICATION
Low: Background color is relatively uniform.
Medium: Background color contains slight variation.
High: Background color contains distinct variation.
Random: Variegated in color and veining. Blending allowances during installation are
strongly recommended.
SOUNDNESS
Group A: Sound Stones with no geological voids or fissures. These stones do not require
any filling or patching.
Group B: Similar to Group A, but geological imperfections could be evident. These stones
may contain holes or voids, which are filled with epoxy or resin.
Group C: These stones may contain holes, voids, lines of separation and structural flaws.
It is standard practice to repair these stones by filling them or reinforcing them.
Group D: Similar to Group C but these stones contain larger natural faults and require
more refinishing over time.
SPECIAL NOTES
n Not recommended for wet areas.
♦ Can be used in interior wet areas, if sealed and maintained properly. If not properly
maintained, the stone look could be altered. Please contact your sealer manufacturer
or your Daltile sales representative for information about products that can protect
the stone from moisture exposure.
6 These stones contain deposits of minerals and iron that may react to moisture. Stone
bleeding or rusting is a common example of this. These stones should not be used
in installations where they would be exposed to standing, run off water or too much
humidity. A sealer is strongly recommended but will not prevent chemical reaction
from happening. Please contact your sealer manufacturer for information about
products that can protect the stone from moisture exposure.
l A sealer is recommended.
CONDITIONS OF PURCHASE
Natural stone products inherently lack uniformity and are subject to variation in
aesthetics (color, shade, finish, etc.) and performance (hardness, strength, slip resistance,
etc.). Natural stone products do not meet minimum coefficient of friction thresholds
recommended by safety standard setting organizations. No warranties, express or
implied, relative to merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose are made regarding
the natural stone products distributed by Dal-Tile. Check local building codes prior to
specification or installation to verify that product technical characteristics comply with
required parameters.
