14. Tom Fuja thanked Sergio Verdú for making arrangements<br />

for <strong>the</strong> Board Meeting. He announced that <strong>the</strong> Annual<br />

Meeting of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Society</strong> will be held at <strong>the</strong> Hotel<br />

Alpha-Palmiers in Lausanne, Switzerland on Sunday,<br />

Placing Pentominoes on Boards — Solutions<br />

1. The first task was to find <strong>the</strong> inequivalent placements of<br />

a pentomino ona5×7board such that <strong>the</strong> rest of <strong>the</strong> board<br />

Note that a right tromino covers at most one of <strong>the</strong> twelve<br />

“dotted squares” on <strong>the</strong> 5 × 7 board. Hence<br />

<strong>the</strong> pentomino must cover at least two of <strong>the</strong> dotted<br />

squares in order for <strong>the</strong> rest to be tiled by ten right<br />

trominoes. (Each pentomino can be placed to cover two of<br />

<strong>the</strong> dotted squares, but only <strong>the</strong> I and <strong>the</strong> V are able to<br />

cover three.)<br />

The 2×3 rectangle,<br />

ways by two right trominoes, so in <strong>the</strong> solutions<br />

which follow we leave this region undivided.<br />
