Each <strong>of</strong> these dimensions is a complex evolving entity in its own<br />

right. The co-evolution <strong>of</strong> the economy in its natural <strong>and</strong><br />

anthropogenic environment must be discussed too. In this context,<br />

the economic, social, environmental <strong>and</strong> institutional sustainability<br />

<strong>of</strong> economy must be defined by criteria, which could be derived from<br />

alternative economic theories.<br />

The main attention in the article is drawn to the analysis <strong>of</strong><br />

scientific concepts, which can be useful to assess sustainable<br />

development. Therefore, the research object <strong>of</strong> the article is the<br />

concepts <strong>of</strong> strong comparability <strong>and</strong> commensurability <strong>and</strong> strong<br />

<strong>and</strong> weak sustainability, which are critically investigated in the<br />

article.<br />

In order to fulfil the main research objective, the following<br />

research tasks had to be accomplished:<br />

• to present the essence <strong>of</strong> the sustainability concept in<br />

economics;<br />

• to analyse the role <strong>of</strong> strong comparability <strong>and</strong><br />

commensurability concepts in the evaluation <strong>of</strong> sustainability;<br />

• to identify the role <strong>of</strong> capital factor in strong <strong>and</strong> weak<br />

sustainability concepts;<br />

• to investigate the correlation between the human capital <strong>and</strong><br />

other types <strong>of</strong> capital in economics;<br />

• to distinguish the linkage between sustainability <strong>and</strong> economic<br />

competition in the context <strong>of</strong> human <strong>versus</strong> ecological<br />

sustainability in corporations.<br />

The methods <strong>of</strong> the research. Logic abstraction, which<br />

encompasses generalisations on theoretical systems analysis <strong>of</strong> the<br />

problems <strong>of</strong> sustainable consumption <strong>and</strong> production, according to<br />

the conclusions <strong>and</strong> reasoning <strong>of</strong> scientists from other countries.<br />

2. The essence <strong>of</strong> sustainability in economics<br />

Huge contrasts between developed <strong>and</strong> under-developed<br />

countries <strong>and</strong> the obvious connection between poverty <strong>and</strong><br />

environmental protection problems inspired Brundtl<strong>and</strong> Commission<br />

report “Our Common Future” (1987) with specific nominative<br />

content <strong>of</strong> sustainability concept. The core <strong>of</strong> arguments lies in fair<br />
