ARI President & CEO 

Once again, it gives me great pleasure to 

present our Annual Report for fiscal year 

2013. While the year was full of challenges 

and changes, many wonderful things were 

accomplished in support of the people 

we serve and their families. 

Our clients continued to meet their aspirations 

and enjoyed a vast number of programs and activities while doing 

so. They participated in holiday-themed parties, men and women’s 

nights out, bowling events, art classes, recycling programs, cooking 

classes, aqua-aerobics, golf, baseball games, symphony concerts and 

much more. They also spent time perfecting their residential, social 

and job skills. In parallel, we, as an agency, continued to meet and 

exceed our goals and quality assurance standards. 

While funding from our major sources has continued to erode, 

our state budget provided a minor increase this fiscal year. That, 

however, was offset by a deficit mitigation plan. Regardless, we 

look to the future with guarded optimism that we will continue 

to meet the needs of our most at-risk citizens. This past year, 

the implementation of the “level of need” based funding was put 

into action for the Day Programs. Residential programs will be 

affected between July 2013 and January 2014. This new method 

of funding will have a real and significant impact on our agency 

and industry. The expansion of our residential program in 

Ridgefield has been put on hold for because funding we sought 

from the Department of Housing and Urban Development has 

been severely reduced. We will, of course, continue work with

models to meet the needs in that community. 

provide necessary skills and support for independence and 

self-reliance in adulthood. To provide these crucial supports, our 

fundraising efforts have to exceed the dwindling resources from the 

State. Our fundraising events promote our mission while soliciting 

the dollars needed to fill the funding gap. But, it is not all about 

the money. Community-based activities with generous companies 

and organizations such as I.B.M., General Electric, Purdue 

Pharma, First County Bank, Fairfield County Community 

Foundation, Knights of Columbus, Kayak for a Cause, and the 

Stamford Police Association, provide time, talent and friendship 

to our organization. Over 400 people were actively engaged and 

over 2,000 hours were clocked this year. 

I wish to thank the outstanding ARI staff, our Board of Directors, 

Friends of ARI, donors and devoted volunteers for your continued 

support and encouragement. With your commitment to our 

mission, we are inspired to seek the higher heights in support of 

people with disabilities. We are up for the challenge and I know 

that you are, too!

The recurring theme being heard locally as well as nationally is

ARI 2012 – 2013 

■ 15 GE volunteers painted and gardened at Lotstein CLA. 

■ Purdue Pharma awarded a $2,500 grant to assist the I.H.S. 

Program. 

■ The Youth Community Fund of Darien awarded a $500 grant 

to assist with the Day Program. This came after a group of 20 

youth assisted with a bingo activity. 

■ The First County Bank Foundation continued their support 

to the I.H.S. Program by awarding a $5,000 grant. 

■ The Fairfield County Community Foundation continued their 

support of the Respite Program by awarding a $9,000 grant. 

This grant allows families to apply for respite dollars. 

■ The Knights of Columbus Council #41 continued their 

support by awarding $10,000 from their annual golf tournament 

and Tootsie Roll Drive. Council #583 awarded $250 

from their annual Tootsie Roll Drive. 

■ Kayak for a Cause awarded over $2,500 in support from their 

annual kayaking event. 

■ The Stamford Police Association continued their support of 

the annual Holiday Party by purchasing presents for each client. 

■ Thomson Reuters continued their support by sponsoring 

the lunch at the annual Holiday Party and sponsoring three 

bowling parties, each for 25 clients. 

■ Cengage Learning sponsored a bowling party for 25 clients. 

■ The Knights of Columbus and Michael Powers hosted 

Halloween, Holiday, Valentine’s Day, and St. Patrick’s Day 

parties for over 90 clients. 

■ The 17 th Annual Lotstein/Martin Golf Tournament, the 

4 th Annual Comedy Night and 8 th Annual Walk for 

Independence were all successful in raising awareness 

and funds for programs and services. 

■ Over 100 clients attended recreation activities including 

art, aqua-aerobics, parties, baseball games, hockey games, 

symphony concerts, bingo, social nights, golf, men’s 

and women’s nights out, bowling, and much more. 

■ Over 400 people volunteered at an ARI sponsored activity 

donating over 2,000 hours of their time. 

■ IBM donated two new servers to benefit the IT department. 

■ The Day Service Options Program provided 62 individuals the 

opportunity to improve their life, social and community skills. 

One example is our Recycling Program at High Ridge Park. 

■ Seven individuals belong to a Self Advocacy Group, running 

bake sales, ice cream socials and other small fundraisers for 

program supplies. The group recognizes and advocates for 

positive changes in the community. 

■ Six individuals are currently receiving School to Adult Life 

Transition Services. 

■ The Landscaping and Housekeeping Crews gained new 

contracts and continue to serve the Stamford community. 

Fifty-two individuals are currently receiving Employment 

Services. They are employed in group-supported, sheltered and 

community jobs. 

■ The Residential Program added a new client to fill a vacancy. 

She is thriving in her new home; making new friends, taking 

on chores and becoming more independent. Fifty-five individuals 

are currently receiving Residential Services in either a 

home or apartment setting 

■ The I.H.S. Program continues to allow clients to live in their 

own apartment with limited staff supports. These clients 

continue to learn new skills to become less reliant on staff 

supports. Many of them are utilizing the Tully Center to learn 

about proper nutrition. 

■ Several clients participated in Special Olympics, competing 

in bowling, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, bicycling, 

swimming, track & field, and tennis.
