The recipient of <strong>the</strong> 2012 ACNN Claire Chee<br />

Award for Excellence in <strong>Child</strong> <strong>Neurology</strong><br />

Nursing is jane Lane, RN, BSN. jane has been an<br />

integral member of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Child</strong> <strong>Neurology</strong> team<br />

at <strong>the</strong> University of Alabama at Birmingham<br />

for a number of years. She was nominated<br />

for this award by Dr. Alan Percy for her<br />

unfailing devotion <strong>to</strong> <strong>Child</strong> <strong>Neurology</strong> and, in<br />

particular, <strong>to</strong> Rett Syndrome, which has lead<br />

jane <strong>to</strong> develop an expertise in this disorder.<br />

her interest developed when a colleague had<br />

a daughter with Rett Syndrome and<br />

jane initially created time from<br />

her current responsibilities <strong>to</strong><br />

devote herself <strong>to</strong> working with<br />

this population of patients<br />

and learning all she could<br />

about this disorder. jane<br />

has extensive research<br />

experience in Rett<br />

Syndrome and now leads<br />

a consortium for research<br />

in <strong>the</strong> areas of Rett,<br />

Angelman and Prader-Willi<br />

Syndromes.<br />

According <strong>to</strong> Dr. Percy, jane<br />

has taken every opportunity <strong>to</strong><br />

expand her knowledge in <strong>the</strong> clinical<br />

and research areas she is working in, whe<strong>the</strong>r it<br />

be children with Tourette Syndrome or patients<br />

with hunting<strong>to</strong>n Disease or neonatal seizures.<br />

jane is described as “authoritative yet humble;<br />

informative but sensitive and, above all, kind.”<br />

She is viewed as a resource for <strong>the</strong> entire Rett<br />

Syndrome community and serves as a clinical<br />

her drive and passion<br />

<strong>to</strong> become <strong>the</strong> most<br />

knowledgeable nurse and<br />

teacher she can be has<br />

led her <strong>to</strong> develop an<br />

internationally recognized<br />

presence...<br />

advisor for <strong>the</strong> International Rett Syndrome<br />

Foundation, answering questions from both<br />

parents and clinicians. jane was <strong>the</strong> recipient of<br />

<strong>the</strong> International Rett Syndrome Foundation Art<br />

of Caring Award in 2010.<br />

jane has developed in<strong>to</strong> an accomplished<br />

speaker and is an authority on <strong>the</strong> issues facing<br />

girls with Rett Syndrome, such as preventative<br />

health measures and issues dealing with<br />

maturity and aging. Within <strong>the</strong> past year,<br />

jane has been invited <strong>to</strong> speak at international<br />

conferences in Norway, Germany and japan.<br />

her list of publication contributions is extensive,<br />

encompassing <strong>to</strong>pics as diverse as nursing<br />

research applications <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> presence of<br />

PCBs in <strong>the</strong> serum of children living<br />

near a former PCB production<br />

facility in Alabama. The majority<br />

of her publications are in <strong>the</strong><br />

area of Rett Syndrome and<br />

hunting<strong>to</strong>n Disease.<br />

It is both an honor and<br />

a privilege <strong>to</strong> extend this<br />

award <strong>to</strong> jane. She is a most<br />

deserving candidate, one<br />

who has truly changed <strong>the</strong><br />

Rett Syndrome community<br />

as well as <strong>the</strong> lives of all of <strong>the</strong><br />

patients she <strong>to</strong>uches. her drive<br />

and passion <strong>to</strong> become <strong>the</strong> most<br />

knowledgeable nurse and teacher she<br />

can be has led her <strong>to</strong> develop an internationally<br />

recognized presence while remaining connected<br />

with her local community and hospital. The<br />

Association of <strong>Child</strong> <strong>Neurology</strong> Nurses is moved<br />

by her example in nursing and is honored <strong>to</strong><br />

present <strong>the</strong> Nursing Excellence Award <strong>to</strong> jane<br />

Lane in 2012.<br />
