Highlights (“the very best” of your event): Jack Merrifield with AK Trowel Trades drew and large crowd this year with his demonstration of setting and pouring concrete to make a mock sidewalk. The students were allowed to participate by touching the cement making hand prints, drawing, etc. They also made mockups of stucco. This was by far the most exciting, attended, and talked about activity of the day. Another first time featured attraction was Anthony Green with Aka Plowing and Hauling. Mr. Green captured the students attention with his high-energy and excitement for 10 to 20 minutes. The student’s total focus rested on his every word. Students asked many questions which he gladly answered. Because we did not have as many students this year, students were allowed to revisit their favorite hands-on station. George with Subway was phenomenal preparing 400 lunches in under 2 hours, because the original vendor mixed up the days. Subway deserves special thanks for their hard work and dedication. Our staff and volunteers were awesome keeping everything flowing. The comments reflected in the student surveys expressed an interest in pursuing a construction career. The Department of Transportation, Department of Labor and Department of Education Commissioner’s were present to greet and bring the welcoming remarks. The event also welcomed other VIP’s accompanying Alaska’s Commissioner’s to witness the event first hand. All of them gave the event high praises and accolades. 5 5
