PREFACE<br />

In 1985, at Catholic Theological College, Clayton, Victoria, Australia, I was teaching<br />

<strong>the</strong> Gospel <strong>of</strong> Mark to a mixed group <strong>of</strong> students. Some were students for <strong>the</strong> ordained<br />

ministry; o<strong>the</strong>rs were lay people taking <strong>the</strong> course as preparation for Christian ministries<br />

in classrooms, hospitals, and parishes. Also present was a strikingly attractive woman, an<br />

academic from <strong>the</strong> neighboring Monash University. As she had a senior academic post at<br />

Monash, I wondered why she would bo<strong>the</strong>r to take an undergraduate course in <strong>the</strong> Gospel<br />

<strong>of</strong> Mark. After my introductory re<strong>mark</strong>s about <strong>the</strong> Gospel, I asked <strong>the</strong> group to introduce<br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves. She shared that she had been diagnosed with terminal cancer, and wished to<br />

follow <strong>the</strong> Markan Jesus to <strong>the</strong> Cross as she made her journey down that same path. Accompanying<br />

that woman through <strong>the</strong> last months <strong>of</strong> her life with <strong>the</strong> text <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gospel <strong>of</strong><br />

Mark in our hands left a lasting impression on all who shared that semester. One <strong>of</strong> my<br />

Salesian bro<strong>the</strong>rs, Peter Rankin, S.D.B., was in that class. For years he has insisted that I<br />

“write something on Mark.” The book that follows is that “something on Mark.”<br />

Administrative responsibilities and o<strong>the</strong>r major publishing commitments have prevented<br />

me from turning my mind and heart to this task until now. Two events coincided to<br />

make <strong>the</strong> study possible. Initially <strong>the</strong>re was a request for a work on Mark from <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>n editorial<br />

director at Hendrickson Publishers, Patrick Alexander. Then followed my appointment<br />

as pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> New Testament at <strong>the</strong> Catholic University <strong>of</strong> America in Washington,<br />

D.C. With Patrick’s promise <strong>of</strong> publication, and <strong>the</strong> resources <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Catholic University<br />

and <strong>the</strong> city <strong>of</strong> Washington available, <strong>the</strong> way was clear for me to realize my wish: to do<br />

“something on Mark.”<br />

Heavily dependent upon <strong>the</strong> great commentaries <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> last century, and some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

monographic literature written in recent decades, this <strong>commentary</strong> records my understanding<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gospel <strong>of</strong> Mark as a unified, <strong>the</strong>ologically driven narrative. Despite my interest<br />

in narrative, I avoid <strong>the</strong> specialized literary terminology that surrounds many<br />

narrative-critical readings <strong>of</strong> biblical texts. I also pay more attention to exegetical and <strong>the</strong>ologicalproblemsthatemergefromaclosereading<strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong>Gospel<strong>of</strong>Markthaniscommon<br />

to narrative commentaries. It remains true that many commentators’ attempts to read <strong>the</strong><br />

text in <strong>the</strong> light <strong>of</strong> its original setting produce forced, and sometimes artificial, interpretations<br />

that make little impact upon a contemporary reader. I wish to marry <strong>the</strong> rich contribution<br />

made by traditional historical scholarship with <strong>the</strong> contemporary focus on<br />

narrative as such. The Gospel <strong>of</strong> Mark, as with <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> biblical literature, is<br />

read today because <strong>of</strong> almost two thousand years <strong>of</strong> reading. The ongoing relevance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

narrative, as well as its original setting, will be a concern <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> following study. Contemporary<br />

biblical <strong>commentary</strong> sometimes ei<strong>the</strong>r ignores <strong>the</strong> literary contribution <strong>of</strong> a<br />
