Ron’s writing career
takes off
Salisbury magistrate and former test pilot
Ron Burrows has just broken new ground
with the publication of his first novel. His
inspiration for An American Exile came
from his love of sailing and an interest in
18th century America.
Ron, a former RAF fighter pilot and chief
test pilot at Boscombe Down, has lived and
worked in the Middle East, Germany and
America.
He first moved to the Salisbury area with
his family in 1970 when he took up his first post as a test pilot. ‘And I just
kept being posted back,’ he says. Ron has been a Salisbury District
Hospital non-executive director for nearly eight years.
An American Exile is set in 18th century Dorset
where stonemason and occasional smuggler Jack
Easton stumbles into an assassination plot and
becomes the scapegoat for two brutal murders.
He is transported to the British-American colony
of Maryland in penal servitude and uses his stone
carving skills to earn his freedom. But tragic news
from Portland intervenes, rekindling his lust for
revenge against the corrupt Weymouth customs
official who framed him.
An American Exile is published by Arima at
£9.99 and is available through Waterstones.
Green rock date
Environmental Rock, Southampton’s sixth annual environmental
awareness and entertainment event, is packed with information,
ideas, tips and activities to help you turn that little bit greener.
Taking place in the Hobbit Pub, Bevois Valley, on Saturday April 26
from noon until 6pm, this year’s event will focus on three core
themes: food and drink; transport and travel; home and garden.
There are numerous quick and easy ways to make a difference in
these areas and the Hobbit’s large garden will be split into themed
zones to make it even easier to identify which changes to make.
Last year’s event attracted more than 650 people to listen to music,
take part in the festival atmosphere and find out about what they
can do to help protect the environment. Entry to Environmental
Rock is free.
