had done nothing wrong in
four prior starts during the
season, including a win in the
Oklahoma Derby in March and
setting a 250-yard track record
Capo De Capi as well for the
Heritage Place Derby and the
pair lined up right next to each
other in the starting gate in
post-positions 2 and 3. While
Freighttrain B was away a tad
slow, Capo De Capi rocketed
from the starting gate under
69-year-old pilot Roy Brooks.
The pair built a solid lead and
Owned by James Sills of
Cedar Hill, Texas, Capo De Capi
ran his personal winning streak
to three straight. Prior to his
current run, he fi nished second
behind Freighttrain B in the
Oklahoma Derby. The 3-yearold
colt handled 400 yards in
:19.758 seconds.
Overlooked by most in
the wagering at 30-1 odds,
Capo De Capi paid $62 to win,
to place and $3.60 to show.
Barackazoom was another
half-length behind in third and
returned 11.60 to show.
