7 Adar Seudah - In Memorial Sassover Rebbe on the guidance of the Sar Shalom of Belz. In the mid- 19th century, after the immediate descendants of R’Moshe Leib Sassover had set up their own Chassidic courts elsewhere, leaving Sassov without a Rebbe, the Sar Shalom advised the townsfolk to nominate Reb Shlomo, who became a great leader in his own right. His daughter Rechel (R’Chanoch Henoch’s mother), married Rav Elazer Rubin, who continued the dynasty. Tragically, R’Chanoch Henoch Dov became seriously ill in 1929 and relocated to lodgings on Valkyrie Road in Westcliff-on-Sea, where he was niftar on 21st July - 13 Tammuz 5689, aged just 40. His levaya departed from Settles Street to Edmonton Federation Cemetery the following day and was reported far and wide across the UK. After R’Chanoch Henoch’s untimely passing, his oldest son Simcha, then just 19 years old, succeeded him as Sassover Rebbe. R’Simcha Rubin spoke excellent English, having spent his teenage years in London, and despite his young age soon proved himself an outstanding Rebbe, beloved by his community and yidden of all stripes. In 1942, the Sassover Rebbe moved north to Golders Green, first establishing his shtiebel at 843 Finchley Road before moving it to its present address on Helenslea Road in the 1980s, where it retained its affiliate membership of the Federation. Over the years, the Sassover Rebbe worked tirelessly to help the kehilla, personally raising funds for numerous causes, many of which only came to light after his petirah. The Sassover Rebbe was niftar on 11 Sivan 5763 / 2003, at the age of 93. In later years he suffered from ill-health, but this did not detract from his now-legendary tzedokoh activities and his tireless commitment to raising standards of tznius and kashrus.
