R<strong>on</strong>cesvalles—Lament for <strong>the</strong> Old Albergue<br />

It slumbers quietly, silent and uninhabited now<br />

except for an occasi<strong>on</strong>al overflow from its<br />

sparkling successor. Exhausted after centuries of<br />

shelter for <strong>the</strong> pilgrim, it can finally relax. Who<br />

knows what secrets lie embedded in those massive<br />

walls, what scenes <strong>the</strong>y have witnessed through <strong>the</strong><br />

ages, what anguish, what joy?<br />

Though <strong>the</strong> fortress-like<br />

exterior with its frugal slit<br />

windows still yields to <strong>the</strong><br />

vast cavern with its serried<br />

ranks of literas stretching<br />

into <strong>the</strong> gloom, <strong>the</strong> bubbles<br />

of excitement are g<strong>on</strong>e. No<br />

novices share <strong>the</strong> highlights<br />

of <strong>the</strong>ir memorable first<br />

day. The soaring arched<br />

roof no l<strong>on</strong>ger absorbs <strong>the</strong><br />

nocturnal noises of a<br />

hundred pilgrims, digesting<br />

<strong>the</strong>m, mingling <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>the</strong>n<br />

reflecting <strong>the</strong>m down<br />

between and around <strong>the</strong> bunks, like <strong>the</strong><br />

murmuring and lowing of a field of c<strong>on</strong>tented cows.<br />

Nor does <strong>the</strong> novice, mistakenly selecting an<br />

inner bunk, w<strong>on</strong>der how to undress unseen by <strong>the</strong><br />

prying eyes <strong>on</strong> all sides, <strong>the</strong>n lie gazing at <strong>the</strong><br />

chandeliers like projecti<strong>on</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> Vía Láctea.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Pilgrims</str<strong>on</strong>g> no l<strong>on</strong>ger awake at dawn, serenaded by<br />

<strong>the</strong> gentle music of <strong>the</strong> Dutch hospitaleros, easing<br />

<strong>the</strong>m into c<strong>on</strong>sciousness and <strong>the</strong> realizati<strong>on</strong> that<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r endurance test lies ahead. The racks no<br />

l<strong>on</strong>ger groan with <strong>the</strong> weight of discarded goods,<br />

From our <str<strong>on</strong>g>American</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Pilgrims</str<strong>on</strong>g> perspective, we are<br />

encouraged by <strong>the</strong> enthusiastic resp<strong>on</strong>se to our first<br />

opportunity to provide support and volunteers for<br />

<strong>the</strong> 2013 Amigos Welcome Service in Santiago de<br />

Compostela. We sent 40<br />

informati<strong>on</strong>/applicati<strong>on</strong> packets to<br />

interested members, including five<br />

couples. O<strong>the</strong>r members may have<br />

obtained packets directly from <strong>the</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Pilgrims</str<strong>on</strong>g>’ Office. By <strong>the</strong> submissi<strong>on</strong><br />

deadline, 21 applicati<strong>on</strong>s had been<br />

received from members of <str<strong>on</strong>g>American</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

result of <strong>the</strong> first stark less<strong>on</strong> of reducti<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong><br />

essence. Outside, no more does <strong>the</strong> sodden<br />

underwear flap hopelessly <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> line, infiltrated by<br />

<strong>the</strong> perpetual mists, like sad remnants of a byg<strong>on</strong>e<br />

age.<br />

Has it passed from our lives, c<strong>on</strong>demned to be a<br />

relic of a disappearing past? Or will <strong>the</strong>re be a<br />

revolt at <strong>the</strong> gentrificati<strong>on</strong> of<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Camino</strong>, <strong>the</strong> extra space,<br />

<strong>the</strong> extra toilets, <strong>the</strong><br />

abundant charging points for<br />

<strong>the</strong> plethora of electr<strong>on</strong>ic<br />

devices, to send us back to<br />

value <strong>the</strong> old, <strong>the</strong> simple, <strong>the</strong><br />

traditi<strong>on</strong>al, <strong>the</strong> bedrock of<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Camino</strong>?<br />

R<strong>on</strong>cesvalles. Orreaga.<br />

R<strong>on</strong>cevaux. Rouncivale, to<br />

Chaucer. Bearing <strong>the</strong> weight<br />

of history and intrigue. Was<br />

it <strong>the</strong> Moors who sent<br />

Roland packing, as every<br />

French schoolchild learns in<br />

<strong>the</strong> chans<strong>on</strong>? Or <strong>the</strong> Basques, unwilling to have<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir homeland used as a battleground by<br />

strangers? The shrouds of mystery seem as<br />

appropriate as <strong>the</strong> fickle wea<strong>the</strong>r, blowing to and<br />

fro as if at <strong>the</strong> whim of an unseen force.<br />

The tour buses mingle uneasily with <strong>the</strong><br />

pilgrims, <strong>the</strong>ir cosseted tourists uncomprehending<br />

of <strong>the</strong> unwashed, footsore pilgrims exhausted from<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir ordeal up <strong>the</strong> mountain.That, mercifully, is<br />

unlikely to change.<br />
