Mid-Atlantic Regional Highlights
Firmwide Highlights
At Holland & Knight, our lawyers are driven by a sense of community purpose and recognize that we have a responsibility
to provide access to legal services for less fortunate individuals and groups. We annually contribute an amount of time
equal to at least 3 percent of the firm’s billable hours to accomplish social change through impactful pro bono legal service.
The cases we take on are as broad as the needs of the communities we serve - from assisting regional partnership
organizations with general corporate matters and aiding in environmental cleanup and restoration efforts, to providing
seniors and disabled persons with life-planning advice.
Increasing genocide awareness
When the Florida Legislature mandated that the Holocaust be taught
in the state’s public schools in the mid-1990s, Holland & Knight
assisted in preparing the first curriculum. Since that time, we have
been focused on creating awareness about the Holocaust and other
genocides, as well as promoting the lessons learned from extraordinary
stories of human courage and compassion. Our attorneys and staff
proudly work with many national and regional partners, including the
following organizations.
Bet Tzedek is a nonprofit that provides free legal services based on
the core principles of Jewish law for equal justice. Our attorneys have
teamed up with Bet Tzedek to help hundreds of Holocaust survivors
recover hundreds of thousands of dollars in reparations from the
German government and gain access to other pro bono legal services
to improve their lives.
Facing History and Ourselves is a professional development
organization that educates teachers and students to combat racism,
anti-Semitism and prejudice, and nurtures democracy through
educational programs worldwide. The Holland & Knight Charitable
Foundation has partnered with Facing History and Ourselves to create
an intensive education curriculum for students and teachers through
the foundation’s Holocaust Remembrance Project.
We work with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s
Lawyers Committee, which provides professional development
initiatives for judges, lawyers, law students and professors to study the
legal ramifications of the Holocaust. Programs address topics such as
how to prevent genocide while promoting human dignity. The Holland
& Knight Charitable Foundation was also a national sponsor of the
museum’s 20th anniversary events and commemorations in 2013. The
sponsorship of the National Tour and Tribute for Holocaust survivors
and World War II veterans helped the museum reach new audiences as
well as pay tribute to those eyewitnesses of the wartime generation.
“The museum is grateful that Holland &
Knight shares our commitment to ensuring
the permanence of Holocaust memory and
teaching its lessons. These lessons - about the
fragility of democracy, the nature of hate and
the consequences of indifference - are very
relevant in our rapidly changing world. Longstanding
and far-reaching efforts by Holland &
Knight honor the survivors and inspire young
people throughout the country to confront
hate, prevent genocide and promote human
dignity.”
— Sarah Ogilvie, director, National Institute for Holocaust
Education at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum
