HIGHLIGHTS<br />

<strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>Charities</strong> is a federation <strong>of</strong><br />

more than 100 <strong>Catholic</strong> human<br />

services agencies located throughout<br />

<strong>New</strong> York City and <strong>the</strong> Hudson<br />

Valley. Toge<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong> agencies respond to<br />

almost every human need, helping<br />

tens <strong>of</strong> thousands <strong>of</strong> adults, children<br />

and families with shelter, food, safety<br />

and more. They <strong>of</strong>fer assistance to<br />

<strong>the</strong> most vulnerable in our midst: <strong>the</strong><br />

young and old, those disabled and<br />

challenged, those mistreated and<br />

neglected, newcomers to our shores,<br />

and those displaced and disenfranchised.<br />

A few <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se wonderful agencies are<br />

highlighted here.<br />

SYMPOSIUM FOR CATHOLIC CHARITIES<br />

FEDERATION AGENCIES<br />

<strong>New</strong> York State Attorney<br />

General Eliot Spitzer was <strong>the</strong> keynote<br />

speaker at <strong>the</strong> Fall <strong>2004</strong> symposium<br />

<strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>Charities</strong> presented for Board<br />

members and executives <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> federation<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>Charities</strong> agencies. In his<br />

introduction <strong>of</strong> Mr. Spitzer, Monsignor<br />

Kevin Sullivan, executive director <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>Charities</strong>, laid out <strong>the</strong> breadth<br />

and depth <strong>of</strong> services provided <strong>New</strong><br />

Yorkers by <strong>the</strong> agencies represented at <strong>the</strong><br />

symposium. Cardinal Egan expressed his<br />

gratitude to <strong>the</strong> directors and executives<br />

present for <strong>the</strong>ir dedicated oversight<br />

and management <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> critical programs<br />

and services <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir agencies.<br />

The Attorney General, who is responsible<br />

for <strong>the</strong> regulation <strong>of</strong> more than 40,000<br />

nonpr<strong>of</strong>it organizations in <strong>New</strong> York State,<br />

explained current and proposed reforms<br />

and best practices in <strong>the</strong> area <strong>of</strong> taxexempt<br />

organizations. Mr. Spitzer also<br />

addressed <strong>the</strong> fiduciary responsibilities<br />

<strong>of</strong> directors and <strong>of</strong>ficers <strong>of</strong> nonpr<strong>of</strong>it<br />

organizations with particular emphasis on<br />

managing and preserving organizational<br />

charitable assets meant to benefit <strong>the</strong> larger<br />

community. All speakers emphasized<br />

<strong>the</strong> critical need for <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>Charities</strong><br />

executives and board members to continue<br />

being watchful and involved stewards<br />

who adhere to <strong>the</strong> highest standards <strong>of</strong><br />

corporate responsibility and governance.<br />

Approximately 150 agency representatives<br />

participated in an evening that included<br />

presentations, discussions and a questionand-answer<br />

period.<br />
