ABOUT <strong>ASTI</strong><br />

The <strong>Agricultural</strong> Science and Technology Indicators (<strong>ASTI</strong>) <strong>in</strong>itiative compiles, processes, and<br />

dissem<strong>in</strong>ates data on <strong>in</strong>stitutional developments and <strong>in</strong>vestments <strong>in</strong> worldwide agricultural R&D,<br />

and analyzes and reports on these trends. Track<strong>in</strong>g these developments <strong>in</strong> ways that facilitate<br />

mean<strong>in</strong>gful comparisons among different countries, types <strong>of</strong> agencies, and po<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>in</strong> time is<br />

critical for keep<strong>in</strong>g policymakers abreast <strong>of</strong> science policy issues perta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to agriculture. The<br />

ma<strong>in</strong> objective <strong>of</strong> the <strong>ASTI</strong> <strong>in</strong>itiative is to assist policymakers and donors <strong>in</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g better<br />

<strong>in</strong>formed decisions about the fund<strong>in</strong>g and operation <strong>of</strong> public and private agricultural science<br />

and technology agencies by mak<strong>in</strong>g available <strong>in</strong>ternationally comparable <strong>in</strong>formation on<br />

agricultural research <strong>in</strong>vestments and <strong>in</strong>stitutional changes. Better-<strong>in</strong>formed decisions will<br />

improve the efficiency and impact <strong>of</strong> agricultural R&D systems and ultimately enhance<br />

productivity growth <strong>of</strong> the agriculture sector.<br />

The <strong>ASTI</strong> <strong>in</strong>itiative is managed by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and<br />

<strong>in</strong>volves collaborative alliances with many national and regional R&D agencies, as well as<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational <strong>in</strong>stitutions. The <strong>in</strong>itiative, which is funded by the Bill & Mel<strong>in</strong>da Gates Foundation<br />

with additional support from IFPRI, is widely recognized as the most authoritative source <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>formation on the support for and structure <strong>of</strong> agricultural R&D worldwide. <strong>ASTI</strong> data and<br />

associated reports are made freely available for research policy formulation and priority-sett<strong>in</strong>g<br />

purposes (http://www.asti.<strong>cgiar</strong>.org).<br />

ABOUT IFPRI<br />

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI ® ) was established <strong>in</strong> 1975 to identify<br />

and analyze alternative national and <strong>in</strong>ternational strategies and policies for meet<strong>in</strong>g food needs<br />

<strong>of</strong> the develop<strong>in</strong>g world on a susta<strong>in</strong>able basis, with particular emphasis on low-<strong>in</strong>come<br />

countries and on the poorer groups <strong>in</strong> those countries. While the research effort is geared to<br />

the precise objective <strong>of</strong> contribut<strong>in</strong>g to the reduction <strong>of</strong> hunger and malnutrition, the factors<br />

<strong>in</strong>volved are many and wide-rang<strong>in</strong>g, requir<strong>in</strong>g analysis <strong>of</strong> underly<strong>in</strong>g processes and extend<strong>in</strong>g<br />

beyond a narrowly def<strong>in</strong>ed food sector. The Institute’s research program reflects worldwide<br />

collaboration with governments and private and public <strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g food<br />

production and improv<strong>in</strong>g the equity <strong>of</strong> its distribution.<br />

Research results are dissem<strong>in</strong>ated to policymakers, op<strong>in</strong>ion formers, adm<strong>in</strong>istrators, policy<br />

analysts, researchers, and others concerned with national and <strong>in</strong>ternational food and<br />

agricultural policy.<br />
