Jeff Newman Video Instruction on DVD
UP FROM THE TOP-A&B PEDALS. Many players assume that learning pedal steel guitar is about learning
a lot of licks or chords. That might be good if you knew how they all got used in a song, or any song. Great
steel players could fold up all the knee levers and play any lick, phrase or melody using only the A&B pedals.
Could you do it? If not, that may be why you get a little frustrated with the E9th tuning. You may not know the
fundamentals well enough. This course uses just the A&B pedals and nothing more. It gives you the right
foundation for understanding how the E9th tuning came about to start with. Learning the basics of what the
A&B pedals do is a must. This course gives you some great phrases and licks, and how to use them as fills with
a singer along with a band. You will learn the difference between a major chord phrase and a seventh chord
phrase. You learn that there is a time to play and a time to get out. The video has each phrase done in slow
motion, a note at a time, with Jeff explaining why each note is there, and from every point of view you would
want to see. Comes with 2 two hour DVD, CD of all the rhythm tracks with which to practice and a book with
everything tabbed out that is played on the DVD. #UFT-AB. $99.00
UP FROM THE TOP-THE D LEVER. This two hour video course explains the use of the ‘D’ lever on E9th
tuning. The ‘D’ lever lowers the 4 th and 8 th strings, E to Eb and was the first knee lever to occur on the E9th
neck. This lever makes great melody lines, fills, intros, turnarounds and chords. This course will show you how
to play it as the pros do. You will learn to play all sorts of phrases as fills to some great old Ray Price tunes in
the Jimmy Day/Emmons styles. The CD has tracks with which to practice including ‘Don’t You Ever Get Tired
of Hurting Me’ and ‘Another Bridge to Burn’. Large print tablature book and DVD. #JN-UPD. $65.00
UP FROM THE TOP-THE F LEVER. A four hour, two video course with a 54 page book of tablature and
CD of rhythm tracks. The ‘F’ lever is probably the least understood lever, but it cannot be ignored since it is
extensively used by almost every player you hear on television, on the road and in the studio. The ‘F’ lever
raises the 4 th and 8 th string E to F. This move gives you all sorts of scales, licks, phrases, and chord progressions
that you just would not want to do without. It is responsible for much of the sound of pedal steel today. This
version of UP FROM THE TOP is four hours long and the amount of information offered about the ‘F’ lever is
limitless. When you use the ‘F’ lever along with the ‘D’ lever and the ‘AB’ pedals you will finally see and
understand where most of those great licks you hear on recordings are coming from. These video courses have
clear pictures and a 3-way split screen so that you can see the neck of the guitar, the pedals and the knee levers
all at one time and up close. #JN-UPF. $99.00
C6TH WORKSHOP. This is for the beginner on the C6th neck. It will get you playing chords and single note
lines on the C6th neck in an easy to understand style. Uses the 5 th and 6 th pedal primarily to get you through
some great chord progressions heard frequently on swing tunes. Comes with two hour DVD, a book of tab and a
rhythm CD. Also shows how to tune your C6th neck and the pedals. #JN-C6W. $65.00
C6TH & SWINGING PART ONE. Two hour course on DVD which also includes a tablature book & audio
CD. This course is about getting serious with the C6th tuning and learning to play some legitimate blues &
swing scales & chord progressions. This course takes up where ‘C6th Workshop’ left off. Part one deals with
3,4,5 and 6 chord progressions that you have to play any time you play C6th blues or swing things.
#C6-S1. $75.00
C6TH & SWINGING PART TWO. This is the follow up to part one. Jeff takes songs like ‘San Antonio
Rose’ and ‘Sweet Georgia Brown’ and dissects them into chord progressions. Jeff shows you how to play seven
intros on the C6th for ‘San Antonio Rose’, how to play through the chord progressions, a nice swing
instrumental for it, and then four swing endings you can put on any tune. Also, if you have ever been weak on
the number system for chords, this will help you. Jeff goes into detail about the number system for the C6th and
how important it is to learn to think and play by it. This course has a two hour DVD, audio CD and tablature
book. #C6-S2. $75.00
