Herbs are used to season our food, treat our<br />

ills, and scent and decorate our homes. T<strong>he</strong><br />

growing popularity of <strong>he</strong>rb gardening is due<br />

not only to t<strong>he</strong>ir many and varied uses, but<br />

also to t<strong>he</strong> fact that <strong>he</strong>rbs are easy to grow and<br />

maintain. We advocate organic methods for<br />

growing <strong>he</strong>rbs to produce lush foliage with high<br />

oil content, resistant to pests and diseases.<br />

DRAINAGE...Choose a location that is very<br />

well drained. <strong>After</strong> a <strong>he</strong>avy rain, water should<br />

not be standing. Many times gardeners will<br />

raise t<strong>he</strong> soil level adding top soil,compost.<br />

and gravel sand for percolation.<br />

SUNLIGHT...In t<strong>he</strong> Sout<strong>he</strong>ast a<br />

recommendation of “sun” or “full sun” may<br />

only mean 5-6 hours of direct sunlight daily.<br />

Generally, <strong>he</strong>rbs would prefer morning sun and<br />

afternoon shade, although many scenarios will<br />

work.<br />

FEEDING...Add generous amounts of a high<br />

quality compost w<strong>he</strong>n planting <strong>he</strong>rbs. Side<br />

dress monthly during t<strong>he</strong> growing season with<br />

fish emulsion and seaweed.<br />

MULCHING...Mulch will protect roots from<br />

t<strong>he</strong> <strong>he</strong>at in t<strong>he</strong> summer, cold in t<strong>he</strong> winter,<br />

and will increase water and nutrient retention.<br />

Use cypress mulch and straw, avoiding pine<br />

products which are somewhat acidic.<br />

Yarrow laughs at full sun, poor soil and drought! Yarrow has showy,<br />

flattened flower <strong>he</strong>ads composed of many tiny, tightly packed flowers. T<strong>he</strong><br />

often ferny, green or grey foliage is usually aromatic. Good butterfly plant.<br />

Dead<strong>he</strong>ad to promote blooms. Tolerates poor soil if well drained. Can<br />

become lanky if soil is too rich. Cut flowers w<strong>he</strong>n pollen is evident to extend<br />

life. Low moisture requirements while t<strong>he</strong> aromatic foliage provides good<br />

A classic yarrow that has lasting appeal. It is a striking combination of 2-3”<br />

wide lemon yellow flower <strong>he</strong>ads and lovely silver foliage. Will bloom all<br />

Showy reddish bronze flowers are ever-changing in color. Great in floral<br />

arrangements or as a decorative dried flower. Aromatic leaves w<strong>he</strong>n<br />

Clump forming perennial with evergreen silver-grey leaves. Golden<br />

compact growth habit, a long blooming period and unique flower color.<br />

Achillea Seduction Series<br />

This series has a neat habit, but what will seduce you is t<strong>he</strong> uniform<br />

flowering. Strong stems with better branching and with shorter<br />

internodes, a compact shape, and uniform flower <strong>he</strong>ight are t<strong>he</strong> great<br />

attributes of this series. T<strong>he</strong>y perform well in hot, humid conditions,<br />
