Foreign Visitors or <strong>the</strong> englishes used in life worlds she may regularly and actively<br />

participate in or have exposure to, such as life worlds organized around<br />

entertainment, morning exercises, religi<strong>on</strong>, or <strong>the</strong> reading and trading <strong>of</strong> books<br />

or underground political news); (3) <strong>the</strong> standardized written chinese <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

People’s Republic <strong>of</strong> China (taught at school and used in such media venues as<br />

<strong>the</strong> China Daily both prior to and after China’s Great Leap Westward); (4) <strong>the</strong><br />

spoken and/or written chineses used in o<strong>the</strong>r social domains which are relevant<br />

to this writer’s existence. Given <strong>the</strong> dominance <strong>of</strong> standardized British<br />

english in Chinese educati<strong>on</strong> both before and after <strong>the</strong> 1949 communist revoluti<strong>on</strong><br />

and given <strong>the</strong> prevalence <strong>of</strong> standardized U.S. english in o<strong>the</strong>r areas <strong>of</strong><br />

life since China’s Great Leap Westward (making it possible for global corporati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

like Nike to exploit <strong>the</strong> practically free labor market and for McD<strong>on</strong>ald’s<br />

and Marlboro to break into <strong>the</strong> “vast” but “virgin” c<strong>on</strong>sumer market), it is highly<br />

possible that this designer might have had certain exposure to if not high or<br />

equal levels <strong>of</strong> expertise in both <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se englishes.<br />

Let’s suppose, for <strong>the</strong> sake <strong>of</strong> this discussi<strong>on</strong>, that we have enough textual<br />

evidence and direct or indirect access to her literacy autobiography to c<strong>on</strong>clude<br />

that her actual expertise in standardized U.S. or British english is limited<br />

and that, when composing <strong>the</strong> sign, she had not been aware <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

expressi<strong>on</strong> “public toilet.” We cannot simply rely <strong>on</strong> this informati<strong>on</strong> to predict<br />

how she would revise <strong>the</strong> sign after she has been “tipped” <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> “correct”<br />

form. How she makes sense <strong>of</strong> and works with <strong>the</strong> standardized template when<br />

redesigning <strong>the</strong> sign would be mediated by o<strong>the</strong>r factors in her discursive resources,<br />

including <strong>the</strong> potential diss<strong>on</strong>ance between <strong>the</strong> standardized english<br />

template and <strong>the</strong> templates endorsed by <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r languages and englishes<br />

that she has encountered and in which she has expertise. Let me pose just <strong>on</strong>e<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> possible scenarios. The template in standardized written and spoken<br />

Chinese is g<strong>on</strong>g g<strong>on</strong>g (public or communal) ce suo (toilet). This expressi<strong>on</strong> is<br />

also <strong>the</strong> standardized dicti<strong>on</strong>ary translati<strong>on</strong> for “public toilet.” Although both<br />

<strong>the</strong> first and sec<strong>on</strong>d characters share <strong>the</strong> same ph<strong>on</strong>etic symbols (g<strong>on</strong>g), <strong>the</strong>y<br />

bear different written forms and c<strong>on</strong>notati<strong>on</strong>s when used separately or in combinati<strong>on</strong><br />

with o<strong>the</strong>r characters. The sec<strong>on</strong>d character, g<strong>on</strong>g, is combined with<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r characters to signify “communism” or “communist.” Given China’s Great<br />

Leap Westward, it is possible (although never predictable) that this designer<br />

might feel ambivalent about <strong>the</strong> echo <strong>of</strong> “communism” embedded in <strong>the</strong> expressi<strong>on</strong><br />

g<strong>on</strong>g g<strong>on</strong>g and thus feel ambivalent about its standardized (dicti<strong>on</strong>ary)<br />

translati<strong>on</strong>, “public.”<br />
