2012 Faculty Awards
Congratulations to the following teachers who were honored this June for
outstanding service to their profession and to the school.
The Sumner Family Faculty Awards are given each year to outstanding
faculty members in each division who have demonstrated a love for teaching
and excellence in their fields. It is an award given by a family who has shown
an unparalleled commitment to the school for three generations. The award
symbolizes the Sumner family’s high regard for the faculty. Congratulations
to the 2011-2012 recipients of the Sumner Family Faculty Awards:
Beginning School: Alesa Davis, 2PreK and 3PreK Assistant Teacher
Lower School: Stuart McCandless, 5th Grade Teacher
Middle School: Christian Waters, 6th Grade Math and Science Teacher
Upper School: Dorothy Herrington, Upper School Eastern Civilizations Teacher
Dorothy Herrington
The Cary Jones Faculty
Mentor Award was
established through an
anonymous gift to the school
in honor of Mr. Jones’
dedication to the faculty when
he was a trustee and chair of
the Board. This year Rowland
Hall proudly honors veteran
Beginning School faculty
member Isabelle Buhler for
demonstrating excellence in
the classroom and service
to the entire Rowland Hall
community with the Cary
Jones Faculty Mentor Award.
Lower School Art Teacher Kathryn Czarnecki Receives
Marquardt Award
The Marquardt Award was established in 2011 through a generous
gift from Bob Marquardt, a long-time former trustee and Board
chair, and father of three Rowland Hall students. This gift to our
endowment annually funds an
extraordinary, faculty-proposed,
professional development
opportunity that will benefit the
school as a whole.
This year, The Marquardt
Award will support Kathryn
Czarnecki’s proposal to
attend the Les Tapies Art and
Architecture summer program
at the American School in
Switzerland.
Kathryn Czarnecki
The seminar offers teachers the opportunity to explore ideas for
strengthening their visual art departments, while reconnecting them
with their individual artistic roots and rekindling their passion
for teaching art. An important dimension of the program is the
interactive, hands-on involvement teachers have in a wide range of
workshops, seminars, discussions, presentations, lectures, activities,
and field trips, which draw on the rich cultural heritage of southern
France.
Ms. Czar, as her students know her, looks forward to the
opportunity to share and learn from teachers from around the
world on ways to implement seminar ideas into the Rowland Hall
Lower School art curriculum. One curricular unit she plans to
develop from her summer experience explores landscape painting
through French artists and working ‘en plein air on the McCarthey
Campus.
