Students enjoy Worlds of Work.
Students
have wow
of a time
By Louise Levy
Education Officer – Indigenous Education,
CEO Wangaratta
fifteen Indigenous students from across
Victoria have attended a residential program,
WOW (Worlds of Work).
WOW is a flagship initiative of the Education
Foundation, a division of the Foundation for
Young Australians.
WOW brings students into the CBD to visit
a number of workplaces and take part in workshops
designed to build on students’ strengths,
their communication skills and their broaden their
aspirations.
WOW provides students with an environment
in which they will be challenged with new contexts,
ideas and role models as they set out to find
answers to a very potent essential question:
“What does it take to succeed in the global
world of life and work?”
The process of gathering a range of data to
answer this question will inform all the activities
for the week.
Students explored this question in many different
contexts and with many different people,
including their peers. More than this the program
provides students with the tools to understand
themselves better through a process of teamwork,
reflection and analysis.
Drawing on a range of innovative pedagogies
including Experiential Learning, Reflective Practice,
Action Research, Visualisation, Role Play
and Metacognitive tools, the program takes the
students on a journey that broadens their view on
what it means to be effective in the changing world
of work.
The three main objectives of the WOW program
are:
Objective 1: To increase students’ awareness
of, desire and ability to access opportunities in life
and work outside their local environment
Objective 2: To provide new experiences, connections
and opportunities for students to explore
and expand their definitions of success in life and
work
Objective 3: To increase students’ capacity to
identify and utilise their skills and strengths to
create their own pathways and achieve their future
aspirations.
The program was fully funded by The Department
of Early Education and Workplace Relations
and the Catholic Education Commission of
