James Cornies of Cornies Farms:<br />

“Add<strong>is</strong>on <strong>RZ</strong> <strong>is</strong> quick to start produc<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>an</strong>d <strong>is</strong> strong aga<strong>in</strong>st a lot of d<strong>is</strong>eases”<br />

James Cornies of Cornies Farms (6 ha) <strong>is</strong><br />

grow<strong>in</strong>g cucumber <strong>variety</strong> Add<strong>is</strong>on <strong>RZ</strong> for<br />

the third consecutive year. “Add<strong>is</strong>on <strong>RZ</strong><br />

gives a high yield <strong>an</strong>d there are no<br />

problems with d<strong>is</strong>eases like fungal d<strong>is</strong>ease<br />

olpidium. Cucumber Green Mottle Mosaic<br />

Virus <strong>is</strong> a problem <strong>in</strong> our area, but the<br />

symptoms do not appear until the end of<br />

the crop <strong>an</strong>d there does not seem to be <strong>an</strong>y<br />

yield reductions.”<br />

James Cornies <strong>is</strong> the third generation of growers<br />

who have grown cucumbers on Cornies Farms s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

1950. He grows h<strong>is</strong> quality cucumbers for the<br />

North-Americ<strong>an</strong> market. He packs them on h<strong>is</strong> own<br />

nursery, <strong>in</strong> the packag<strong>in</strong>g required by the supermarket<br />

cha<strong>in</strong>s, which he supplies via three d<strong>is</strong>tribution<br />

comp<strong>an</strong>ies. “I always have a few trial rows with<br />

other varieties on the go. th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> the third consecutive<br />

year we have chosen the <strong>variety</strong> Add<strong>is</strong>on,<br />

because of its high yield.”<br />

Easy <strong>variety</strong><br />

“the crop starts vegetatively <strong>an</strong>d ends very<br />

generatively. In the area where we are, light levels<br />

are high <strong>an</strong>d vegetative growth <strong>is</strong> a d<strong>is</strong>t<strong>in</strong>ct<br />

adv<strong>an</strong>tage.” In the daytime the grower ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s a<br />

temperature of 21°C <strong>an</strong>d dur<strong>in</strong>g the night, 18-20°C.<br />

“We ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> a day/night differential of 1-3°C. my<br />

Brothers Rob <strong>an</strong>d Ralph v<strong>an</strong> Dam<br />

are grow<strong>in</strong>g Add<strong>is</strong>on <strong>RZ</strong> for the third<br />

consecutive year at their Westl<strong>an</strong>d<br />

Greenhouses comp<strong>an</strong>y. They use the<br />

<strong>variety</strong> for the second crop, which starts<br />

<strong>in</strong> May. “Grow<strong>in</strong>g Add<strong>is</strong>on <strong>RZ</strong> <strong>is</strong> virtually<br />

trouble-free. The fruit length <strong>is</strong> good <strong>an</strong>d<br />

cutt<strong>in</strong>g starts 2 – 3 days earlier,” says<br />

Rob v<strong>an</strong> Dam, well-sat<strong>is</strong>fied.<br />

Cucumber grow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong> their blood. twenty<br />

years ago the two brothers took the nursery over<br />

from their father, who started <strong>in</strong> cucumbers<br />

nearly forty years ago. the brothers grow three<br />

crops per year. the pl<strong>an</strong>ts are grown <strong>in</strong> coco<br />

fibre. “Our target <strong>is</strong> the market for mediumsized<br />

cucumbers with a length of 13-14 <strong>in</strong>ches.<br />

th<strong>is</strong> length fetches the best prices.”<br />

experiences with drastic reductions <strong>in</strong> the pre-midnight<br />

temperature are not at all good.”<br />

James Cornies starts water<strong>in</strong>g two hours after sunr<strong>is</strong>e<br />

<strong>an</strong>d cont<strong>in</strong>ues until two hours before sunset,<br />

100-125 ml per water<strong>in</strong>g round, based on light levels<br />

of 85-100 joules. He also waters dur<strong>in</strong>g the night, if<br />

necessary. “Whether we water extra dur<strong>in</strong>g the night<br />

depends on the amount of run-off <strong>an</strong>d whether the<br />

EC <strong>is</strong> r<strong>is</strong><strong>in</strong>g too much. We water dur<strong>in</strong>g the night not<br />

only <strong>in</strong> the <strong>summer</strong>, but <strong>in</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ter as well. the<br />

rockwool also dries out when we have the heat<strong>in</strong>g on.”<br />

the EC of the feed solution depends on the stage<br />

the crop <strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong>. “the EC <strong>in</strong> the grow<strong>in</strong>g medium<br />

varies from 2.0 to 3.5. the EC <strong>in</strong> the feed solution<br />

<strong>is</strong> somewhere between 2.0 <strong>an</strong>d 3.0.”<br />

Well-paid medium cucumbers<br />

Production <strong>is</strong> good: 57 cucumbers per square metre,<br />

all Class I. “the medium cucumbers fetch the most<br />

money. We also have a market for small cucumbers.”<br />

tr<strong>an</strong>sferr<strong>in</strong>g from cutt<strong>in</strong>g stem fruits to lateral<br />

fruits creates a harvest<strong>in</strong>g peak. “ the fruit load <strong>is</strong><br />

highest <strong>in</strong> may, June <strong>an</strong>d July. When the fruit load<br />

<strong>is</strong> too high, we do some th<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g out.” th<strong>is</strong> season<br />

the fruit colour turned a little lighter around week 8<br />

<strong>an</strong>d there was a short period when the cucumbers<br />

were not quite so good. “the cause <strong>is</strong> unknown. In<br />

spite of that temporary problem we are still gett<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a large number of good cucumbers.” <br />

Rob v<strong>an</strong> Dam of Westl<strong>an</strong>d Greenhouses:<br />

“Add<strong>is</strong>on <strong>RZ</strong> gives good,<br />

medium-sized cucumbers”<br />

Pl<strong>an</strong>t bal<strong>an</strong>ce<br />

the grower <strong>is</strong> happy about the bal<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>in</strong> the<br />

pl<strong>an</strong>ts. “It <strong>is</strong> a generative crop. We are grow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the <strong>variety</strong> for the third year now <strong>an</strong>d have had<br />

no problems with the high <strong>summer</strong><br />

temperature. Production last year came to 160<br />

pieces per square metre. With our cutt<strong>in</strong>g<br />

system <strong>an</strong>d the pl<strong>an</strong>ts generative nature, we<br />

prevent large fluctuations <strong>in</strong> fruit size.”<br />

Water<br />

V<strong>an</strong> Dam starts water<strong>in</strong>g 1.5 hours after sun up<br />

<strong>an</strong>d cont<strong>in</strong>ues until 1-1.5 hours before sunset.<br />

He gives around six litres of water per pl<strong>an</strong>t, or<br />

eight litres per square metre. the EC <strong>in</strong> the<br />

grow<strong>in</strong>g medium <strong>is</strong> 2.5-3.0. the EC <strong>in</strong> the feed,<br />

depend<strong>in</strong>g on the amount of light, <strong>is</strong><br />

2.3-2.5.
