Blue Spring Manatees Suffer Sixty-Eight Boat Strikes continued from page 4 He had a new boat strike. It was a skeg and four props over the shoulders. Paddy heals well, and I expect it to be grayed over by next November. The big outflow was on March 8th. Pregnant Dana, Howie, Lucille and calf, Margarito, Squeaky and mom, and Annie all said goodbye. Annie is very pregnant. Every time I would see her I would look for a calf or hope she would roll and show she was still pregnant. She better bring us a calf next season! Brutus was last reported by Park Staff on March 11th. Also reported by Park Staff was Georgia and calf on March 12th. She probably knew swimming was open and was coming in to play with the swimmers and thus aggravate the Rangers. On the rescue and rehabilitation side, Caleb, a manatee taken from the refuge to SeaWorld with terrible cold stress last season, was returned to the wild. He found Blue Spring for the winter and is doing well. Slip, released two or three years ago, was picked up in Crescent Lake suffering from a boat strike and cold stress and is doing well at SeaWorld. The webcam is great! Good comments are coming in from all over the map. We watched a manatee we wanted to capture for three days play in front of the camera from 7:00 to 8:00 a.m., and when we got there she was gone. When they play at the cameras it is easy to tell male from female. The young manatee filmed playing with the alligator was named Gator. Unwanted Vehicle or Boat? We Remain Focused On Habitat Protection Issues continued from page 2 8 even during the winter months, when increasing numbers of manatees are becoming dependent upon this spring for survival. Natural warm-water sites must be protected and enhanced if manatees are to be recovered and guaranteed viable winter habitat into the future. So far, state and federal agencies have not shown the leadership required to implement such protections. With a 5-year status review of manatees currently underway by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and an update to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Com mission’s Management Plan due at the end of 2012, we are already reminding these agencies of their obligations and the current habitat-related obstacles that threaten the long-term security of the manatee population in Florida.
