Mildura Thanks to Coralee for an excellent time in Mildura. The hospitality and comradeship was wonderful. The paddle steamer and district tour were also highlights. ABA and Bravery support In Mildura we were able to interact with local Mayor Glenn Milne, who was exceptionally supportive. He wrote to the Prime Minister supporting our call for a national day to commemorate bravery. On this subject I wrote to the Prime Minister and essentially the response was that if the community of Australia thought that the proposal was a good idea, they would consider it. Following this we have made presentations to a range of groups, including the RSL, Australia Day Committee, Municipal Association of Victoria and the Order of Australia Association and have received support. Last week the Premier of Victoria announced that he would be enacting a Good Samaritan Day, following bravery shown by a number of people who suffered as a consequence. I have spoken to both the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet and also the Premier’s office. We hope that a positive national outcome follows and that the two levels of Government talk. I look forward to catching up with as many of you as possible at the Queensland festivities next month and Canberra in February. NATIONAL TREASURER / MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY– Peta Wilson Hello all! Our finances are growing at a great rate. In fact we have raised just over $150,000.00! Thanks to the hard work by our National Executive, our valuable members and also the generous recent donations received from Mr Geoff Handbury AO and Legacy Co-ordinating Council and the Returned Services League. Well done and Thank you! Membership is also growing; we have just processed our 201st member, with more to come. A very warm welcome to all our new members, I hope you find your affiliation with the ABA a rewarding experience. Unfortunately we lost a couple of members also, including the tragic passing of Mr Gregory Slater. Our sincere condolences go out to his family. A reminder that some memberships are due for renewal at the end of this year. You should have received an email or you are about to receive a letter containing a membership renewal form if this effects you. Bear in mind we have lots of wonderful ABA merchandise on offer. Best wishes, Peta Wilson National Treasurer * * * * * News from the Thurgar household. Retiring from the ABA has been a big change for the Thurgars. They say a change is as good as a holiday, and that a holiday is a good way to relax, and that relaxing is a good way to get pregnant...... Well, it must be true! We are currently 'expecting', and the date given for our baby to make their debut appearance is (can you believe It.?) the 14th of February 2010! Also, we are moving house in November to the beautiful Tweed Valley. So, with our baby's due date the same date as the AGM weekend, we have a somewhat original excuse for not being able to attend the 2010 AGM in Canberra. Please accept our apologies, as we are genuinely disappointed not to be able to be there to see everyone, but hopefully we will have some exciting news to share with you on that weekend! Needless to say, neither of us will know ourselves with a new baby to care for, but we are both very happy and full of excited anticipation.
