Additional Work Opportunities for Reservists Are you an Active or Standby Reservist who would like to do additional Reserve work? Are you looking for an opportunity to experience Army and the ADO outside the Reserve unit? Army has established a program that provides additional workforce opportunities for Reservists. Administered and managed by The Active Standby Staff Group (ASSG), the program matches reservist military and civilian skills with vacancies within Army and the ADO. There are a variety of tasks or projects that can be performed remotely or on site over short and long periods. The type of work you perform is based on your availability and choice. MAJOR JOHN STRASKYE… Cont’d from p7) Gophers are the direct opposite. If you want something done, find a Gopher. There’s usually one in every unit. And when I look around, there are quite a few here, saying goodbye to John, today. BUT I will always remember John as the quintessential GOPHER. He showed little respect towards, and had an enormous talent for cutting through, stifling bureaucracy and red tape...To get the job done. When you add this talent to his passion for the Corps and the Association - and throw in his stubbornness when he felt he was right – you had a formidable force indeed. John hated posers or poodle fakers and he had little truck with political correctness. Like all good Gophers, he often worked just inside the rules – sometimes maybe a touch outside the rules – but as I said, he got the job done. And again, like all good gophers, he would rather ask for forgiveness than for permission. (And he wasn’t long on asking for forgiveness) One thing that was never in question was his loyalty and commitment to the Corps and its members. That’s why he founded the RAAMC Association. Sure, he received help from a number of us here today but it was undeniably his idea: his baby. And there is no doubt what-so-ever that it would not be in existence today without his input and his defence of it against bureaucratic nihilists. I firmly believe that the RAAMC Association, as it develops, will become of enormous significance to all its members – Past, Present and Future – and will become John’s lasting legacy to the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps. I admired John immensely for his special talents and for his love of and dedication to the Corps. I treasured his friendship and am proud to be able to call him a Brotherin-Arms and a mate. George Mansford, in his latter days, has become quite the poet, publishing a number of verses, mainly on military life. When I told him of John’s passing, he sent me the following, to offer to Wendy and she has requested that I read it to you all. So I will finish today with a poem by Brigadier George Mansford. It’s titled… A Warrior's Farewell Go now and travel beyond the void Seek the familiar column and when you meet See once more those smiling faces Hear again laughter and sounds of marching feet No more the visions of the bloody past Gone are the nightmares and lingering pain Soon you will be home at long, long last United with fallen comrades once again And when the final roll is called Another page of history complete Rest with brave spirits such as they In a camp where you will find peaceful sleep Go swiftly now and seek your past Your duty done for all to tell With pride of who and what you were And now we bid you a fond farewell (George Mansford ©December 2007) SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT The Government announced in March 2011 the upholding of a ‘Finding’ as a result of an independent Defence Honours and Awards Appeal Tribunal Inquiry, into the ‘Recognition of a Gallantry Award for Far East Prisoners of War, during WW 2, who were killed whilst escaping”. Twenty soldiers have been ‘recognised’ for their family to receive this brave award but the Defence Dept. have only located EIGHT to date.
