ut I think she was onto something.
When I decided to immigrate to
Canada 16 years ago, I have to confess
I was not so proud of India. I was in
fact angry that corruption and inefficiency
had made daily living and
commuting a living hell in Mumbai. It
is what drove me to come here. I am
not sure I would’ve made that decision
today. The economy was stagnating,
the outlook was bleak and pessimistic,
as a country we didn’t seem to be
progressing on any level.
Ever since Prime Minister Narendra
Modi took the reigns, a new sense of
optimism has gripped India and the
Indian diaspora around the world. His
charisma, boundless energy and clear
vision of India has given even the most
skeptical and pessimistic Indo-Canadian
a reason to believe in India again.
I have met so many Indo-Canadians
now approaching retirement age who
are considering spending winters in
India. The popularity and demand for
Visas-on-Arrival and OCI (Overseas
Citizen of India) is testament to the pull
India is now exerting on the diaspora.
Hundreds of thousands of second-generation
Indians who’ve been born and
brought up in the West are now living
and working across India, often to
the chagrin of their parents who left
in order to give their children a better
life. As the Indian economy grows and
more and more opportunities open up,
don’t be surprised to see thousands of
Indo-Canadians begin their version
of Ghar Wapasi. Suddenly we are not
only more confident about admitting
we are of Indian origin, we are also
more open to the idea of living there.
