Behrend Lions Volleyball
2002 Season Preview
The Penn State Behrend Lions volleyball team is coming off a
banner year in which they captured their first-ever AMCC
conference championship. “Last season we had a great year,”
said second-year head coach Kellie Diehl. “Our team really gelled
and performed at a high level when it mattered most.” After losing in
the AMCC finals the year before, the team finished the 2001 season
with a strong 22-10 record that included a 10-2 performance against
league teams.
“This year we will
rely heavily on our

and their competitive

Diehl said. “We
need this group to
step up their level
of play and be
ready to go right
from the start.”
The Behrend
Lions will have to
replace a pair of
talented allconference
players who
accounted for
over 1,000
assists, 700 digs, and 500 kills.

Leading the Behrend Lions will be senior co-captain Rose Boni
(Ridgway/Ridgway). A multi-talented player who recorded 248 digs
last season, Boni can set or lead from the back row in her defensive
specialist position. She may also see action as the libero player, the
new back-row, unlimited-substitution position that has been added
this year. “Rose’s versatility is really an asset for us,” Diehl said.
“Having the libero player this year is an exciting change, and you
need versatile athletes to play that position.”

Three key juniors will be back in uniform for the defending AMCC
champions: Danielle Bemis (Corry/Corry), Lauren Senkevich
(Aliquippa/Hopewell), and Katie Butler (Benezette/Elk County Christian).
All three will be expected to make big contributions to this
year’s squad. Bemis, a co-captain, battled injuries all season but still
accumulated 253 kills and 388 digs while earning all-conference
honorable mention honors. Senkevich led the team in solo blocks
with 25 and had 30 blocking assists and 198 kills. Butler started last
season with an injury, but looks to earn more time and work into the
line-up. Diehl is pleased with the experience of her juniors. “Danielle
will take more of a leadership role this season because of her court
experience, Lauren will be a key in the middle, and Katie was voted
the team’s most improved player by her peers, so we are optimistic
about the season’s possibilities,” Diehl said.
Also returning will be a pair of sophomores, Ashley Ordy (Butler/
Butler) and Emily Waters (Erie/Villa Maria). Ordy saw action in 111
games last year while Waters will be working to earn more playing
time. Ordy will see time as a hitter and is a key in the back row, and
Waters can handle setter’s responsibilities or play the libero position.
Adding depth for coach Diehl will be seven
first-year players—Tricia Adams (Fairview/
Fairview), Elizabeth Bello (Warren/
Warren), Erin Bennett (Erie/Central),
Amanda Evans (Pittsburgh/Upper St.
Clair), Emily Gabrys (Franklin/Franklin),
Katie Ortmann (Yatesboro/Ford City), and
Amanda Steinke (Dayton, OH/Vandalia
Butler).
The Behrend Lions will play twelve
conference matches along with three
tournaments in 2002. The season starts
with the Oberlin Tournament on August
30-31, and then the Behrend Lions host
seven teams in their annual home tournament
on September 13-14 in the Junker
Center. Defense of their conference crown
begins on September 17, at 6:30 p.m.,
when they welcome the La Roche
Redhawks.

Behrend Lions Volleyball
Coaching Profiles
Head Coach Kellie Diehl
Kellie Diehl is in her second season as the head volleyball
coach and head softball coach at Penn State Behrend.
Last year, Diehl’s team recorded an impressive 22-10 record
and won the college’s first-ever AMCC volleyball championship.
Prior to coming to Behrend in 2001, Diehl was the
head coach of the softball and volleyball programs at
Wilmington College in Wilmington, Ohio, for three seasons.
She also served as head coach of the volleyball and tennis
teams at Heidelberg College in 1996-97 and was previously
an assistant volleyball and softball coach at Mt. Union
College.
As an undergraduate, Diehl was a four-year starter for the
Behrend Lions volleyball team and a four-year starter
behind the plate for the softball team. In volleyball, she set
the school record for aces in a season and aces in a career.
On the softball field, she set the record for the highest
fielding percentage for a catcher and guided the team to the
Eastern College Athletic Conference playoffs, winning the
title in 1992.
Diehl earned her degree in business management from
Penn State Behrend in 1992 and obtained her graduate
degree in sports management from St. Cloud University in
1995.
Assistant Coach Michelle Walther
Michelle Walther is in her first season as an assistant to the
volleyball and softball programs at Penn State Behrend.
She was a standout in basketball and softball at Wilmington
College. Walther was an all-conference performer and
named the MVP of the Quakers softball team as a junior.
She earned her bachelor’s degree in communication arts
and is now working toward a master of business administration
degree at Penn State Behrend.
Assistant Coach Carol Masters
Carol Masters is in her first year as an assistant coach for
the Behrend Lions volleyball squad.
Masters was a standout player at D’Youville College in
Buffalo, New York. In 1995-96, she earned the Volleyball
Coach’s Award and was also named the Scholar Athlete of
the Year. She graduated from D’Youville with bachelor’s and
master’s degrees in occupational therapy.

than 3,700 students benefit

the atmosphere of a small college.
Students enjoy the beauty of the
college’s 725-acre campus located
only minutes away from the heart of
Pennsylvania’s fourth-largest city.
Penn State Erie has offered fouryear
degrees for more than twentyfive
years, and today students can
choose from twenty-nine baccalaureate
majors and nineteen minors,
five associate degree programs, a
Master of Business Administration
(MBA) degree, and a Master of
Manufacturing Systems Engineering
degree (M.ENG.).
Penn State Erie has a growing
academic reputation and an
impressive array of new facilities.
Fundamental to the college’s
success are vibrant partnerships
with business and industry, as
demonstrated by twenty-eight
outreach centers and programs. A
recent addition to campus is
Knowledge Park at Penn State Erie.
This 200-acre research and
development park, a partnership
with local and state agencies,
houses knowledge-based organizations
that benefit from the site’s
superior technological infrastructure
and Penn State’s strengths in
applied research and technology
transfer.
New campus facilities include an
indoor athletics and recreation
center, observatory, chapel and
carillon, and baseball and softball
fields. On-campus housing for 1,500
students includes two new residence
halls. Soon to be constructed
is a $30 million Research and
Economic Development Center as
well as an additional residence hall.
Campus life is enriched by more
than seventy clubs and organizations,
ranging from the Astronomy
Club to Habitat for
Humanity to the
Society of Women
Engineers. A growing
athletic program
features twenty-one
varsity teams (ten for
men and eleven for
women), which
compete in the
Allegheny Mountain
Collegiate Conference.
Students also participate
in nineteen
intramural and club sports.

Penn State Behrend Athletic Facilities
Junker Center
The growth of
athletics at Penn
State Behrend has
led to the development
of new indoor
facilities. The $10.2
million Junker
Center, which
opened in the spring
of 2001, comprises
72,800 square feet,
including outstanding
volleyball and basketball facilities.
The center features three allpurpose
courts and a gymnasium
seating 1,600, an eight-lane
swimming pool, three-lane
running track, jumping pits,
aerobics room, locker rooms,
offices, and a variety of exercise
equipment. The fully equipped
Jageman Fitness Room provides
a variety of exercise equipment
for students, faculty, and staff.
Behrend Fields
The college’s soccer teams
compete on the Behrend Fields,
located northwest of the baseball
and softball complex and across
the bridge over Trout Run.
The complex comprises four
multi-purpose athletic fields and
a putting green. The facility was
created in 1988, thanks to a
pacesetting gift of $1.4 million
from an anonymous donor. The
fields are also used for
intramurals and course instruc-
tion. They accommodate a
variety of play configurations,
including flag football and
softball.
Other outdoor facilities on
campus include lighted tennis
courts, sand volleyball courts,
and recreational basketball
courts.
Baseball and Softball
Complex
Penn State Behrend’s recently
completed baseball and softball
complex, located adjacent to the
main campus entrance, ranks as
one of the region’s best facilities.
Each field features a built-in
irrigation system, seventy-foot inground
dugouts, batting cages,
bullpens, scoreboards, a full
warning track, permanent
fences, a concession stand, and
scorekeepers’ stations.
