THYROID DESTRUCTION SECONDARY TO<br />

RADIOACTIVE IODINE OR SURGERY<br />

• Patients who have received radioactive iodine<br />

therapy or surgery for treatment of<br />

hyper<strong>thyroid</strong>ism may be left with no<br />

functioning <strong>thyroid</strong> tissue<br />

• If there is no significant activity 6 months after<br />

iodine treatment, it is assumed there will no<br />

longer be adequate functioning <strong>thyroid</strong>. The<br />

result is hyper<strong>thyroid</strong>ism
