I loved Sevastopol and Lviv especially<br />
when I visited Ukraine; I arrived in Lviv<br />
on a beautiful Saturday morning in<br />
May, and took a train back to Kiev the<br />
same night to fly out of the country…<br />
the huge cemetery remains a really<br />
trong memory, those thousands of<br />
graves in a beautiful park in the hills<br />
above the city. And in Kiev, the Mikhail<br />
Bulgakov museum is extraordinary.<br />
Such respect and love towards a<br />
writer. In the English-speaking world<br />
he is revered for The Master &<br />
Margarita, yet few have ever read The<br />
White Guard, whereas that is the book<br />
Ukrainians love most.<br />
The most inspiring pace for me,<br />
however, is Istanbul. I’ve visited<br />
it five times, and would be quite<br />
happy to live there for a while; it’s<br />
the most extraordinary city to take<br />
photographs, so much happening<br />
on every street corner, and history<br />
— hundreds and hundreds of<br />
years of history — around every corner.<br />
Anyone who loves photography<br />
should visit it at least once.<br />
