King William Association December 2008/January 2009 Page 6 KWA Sidewalk Improvement Program Renewed for 2008-09 The KWA Sidewalk Improvement Program is a reimbursement program that provides incentives for King William property owners to make public improvements in the neighborhood. The KWA Board recently voted to renew the program and increase the reimbursement amount for approved work to $25 per linear foot, up to a maximum of $2,500 per “street face.” To receive reimbursement, please follow these guidelines: • Applications must be submitted by January 16, 2009. • Acceptance of applications will be on a first come, first served basis. • All sidewalk work must be completed by April 1, 2009. • Applicant must submit the final City inspection report to the KWA. The KWA will make payment to the applicant within 30 days of receipt of a final City inspection report and verification of all requirements. King William Association December 2008/January 2009 Page 7 Memories of the Schuchard Family Anne Schuchard Hebdon died October 17, 2008, at age 78. Her parents were Ernst and Elizabeth Schuchard. Anne grew up in her parent’s home at 516 King William Street, currently the home of Ed and Dana Haverlah. Ernst Schuchard, grandson of C. H. Guenther, the mill founder, had the house built for his family in 1927 on lots purchased from Edward Steves. His first cousin, Kurt Beckmann, was his architect. Ernst and Elizabeth’s daughter Anne was born in 1930; their second daughter, Sallie, in 1936. Ernst’s wife, Elizabeth, died in 1946 at age 44. Two years later, Ernst married Dorothy Terry. Ernst was an accomplished artist and also an ardent preservationist. He researched and documented the remnants of the exterior painting on San Antonio’s missions and assisted in the restoration of a portion of this work at mission San Jose using natural materials. He also did extensive research and assisted in the restoration of the grist mill at San Jose. A collection of his paintings and memorabilia are housed in the archives of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas at Alamo Plaza. Ernst died in 1972 at age 79. Dorothy lived on in the house for the next 25 years. She was a proud, genteel lady but resolute – insisting on staying in her house and her neighborhood even when it fell into disrepair and disrepute in the 1940s and ’50s. She finally moved to Chandler Retirement Home in the late 1990s and died in 2001 at age 93. Ed Haverlah says that he and Dana have a tremendous admiration for the Schuchard family and feel very lucky to have fallen into the ownership of their home. “After we renovated and moved into the house, both of the Schuchard daughters came to visit and enjoyed telling stories and remembering things they did when they lived in the house as children,” says Ed. “Most of the stories were about their father, whom they obviously adored. An especially poignant moment was when they were looking out into the yard from the upstairs bedroom. They said they could almost see their father out tilling the garden on the side yard between our house and one next door. Apparently, he spent quite a lot of time in his garden.” “When one of Ernst’s granddaughters and her husband visited our place after we finished redoing the yard, he paid us a real complement,” said Ed. “This is the way Ernst always had this place looking,” the grand-daughter’s husband said.
