Important notes on NEW RAVEN frames
by Thorn’s designer Andy Blance. September 2012
My thinking behind the NEW RAVEN
was this:-
“The THORN NOMAD is regarded by
most people, who have tried one, as
being the finest expedition bike ever
made. Those who have ridden the
THORN MERCURY have enthused
about its brisk sporty performance. As
we have these two fine bicycles, we
ought to do our utmost to make our new
THORN ROHLOFF BIKE the ultimate
all-rounder.”
This is what I believe I’ve achieved!
There are definite and distinct
advantages to using 26” wheels and
lately, I have become even more
convinced that, with 26” wheels, opting
for very high quality fat tyres is a better
decision than choosing skinny or
medium width tyres.
High quality fat tyres roll easily and are
exceptionally comfortable. The tyres and
the rims are still relatively light in weight,
which makes for nippy acceleration and
easier climbing.
Fat tyres protect the rims and allow “off
piste” routes to be taken, with less risk.
26” wheels are stronger than 700c
wheels of the same weight.
Even at the same weight as a 700c
combination, 26” wheels and tyres have
lower inertia, thanks to their smaller
diameter.
Step
Through 33Kg 17Kg N/A 450 555 73.5 438 N/A N/A
I believe that most people would benefit
from having 26” wheels on a general
purpose bike, in most circumstances.
You can focus the NEW RAVEN towards
being a load carrying machine, or you
can focus it towards being a supercomfortable,
sporty, light-weight,
thoroughbred beastie for rough roads, by
selecting the appropriate fork please see
page 10.
I have taken this opportunity to
rationalise the sizing.
The NEW RAVEN (Rohloff specific)
frames and the Mk3 Sherpa (derailleur
specific) frames are now manufactured
in exactly the same sizes, using the
same diameter tubes in exactly the same
2 colours.
As a consequence, spare forks for
Mk3 Sherpa or the NEW RAVEN are
now the same item.
In addition to rationalising the sizes, I
decided to use different diameter tubes
for different sized frames. The smallest
frames now use standard size tubing,
which is 1" Top tube and 1⅛" down tube.
The small to medium size frames use
oversize tubes 1⅛" top tube and 1¼"
down tube. The larger frames use extra
oversize tubes 1¼" top tubes and 1⅜"
down tubes.
I believe that this makes sense. Small
frames are inevitably stronger than large
frames and riders of small frames are
usually lighter than riders of large frames.
The Short S frames are intended
primarily for use with drop bars, or
(heaven forbid) with butterfly bars.
The Long L frames are intended
primarily for use with straight or comfort
bars.
The NEW RAVEN frames still use the
Standard Rohloff hub (with internal
cables),
they now have the beautifully functional
cast stainless seat post clamp, which we
have introduced to our other models.
These frames also have stainless
bosses and stainless cable guides. The
EBB width is the same as the RST
73mm.
The NEW RAVEN frames and both forks
will be available in either Matt Black
powder coat or in Blood Red gloss
powder coat finish.
We would, by default, supply your
choice of fork, in the same colour as
the frame but we are happy to supply
the other colour fork if you wish.
For example; the red frames would look
good with a matt black fork and the matt
black frames could look great, with the
red fork...it’s your choice!
