<strong>EME</strong> Junior Officer Community Involvement<br />

Over the course of the summer the<br />

candidates of the <strong>EME</strong> Officer Phase<br />

IV were extensively involved within<br />

various communities. <strong>The</strong> candidates<br />

participated in events such as the<br />

annual base Terry Fox Run, helping<br />

to raise funds and cancer awareness,<br />

as well as CFS<strong>EME</strong> Family Day and<br />

Armed Forces Day events like the<br />

Kiddie and Corporate Commando<br />

courses.<br />

While the course did great work as a<br />

whole, the community involvement of<br />

one candidate deserves special<br />

recognition. For the second straight<br />

summer 2Lt Robie Gourd volunteered<br />

his time as a counselor at Camp<br />

Geddie in Merigomish, Nova Scotia, a<br />

camp he attended as a child. <strong>The</strong><br />

camp, which is run by the<br />

Presbyterian Church of Canada,<br />

accepts children of all ages and<br />

backgrounds for a week long vacation<br />

from home.<br />

2Lt Gourd counseled and mentored<br />

boys and girls between the ages of 9<br />

and 11 years old during some of his<br />

summer leave this past August. On<br />

any given day 2Lt Gourd would lead<br />

the children through various activities<br />

including canoeing, Bible study,<br />

nature class, and arts and crafts.<br />

2Lt Gourd has found the experience<br />

both enjoyable and rewarding. When<br />

asked about his personal benefits, he<br />

noted that the experience provided a<br />

relaxing getaway from the rigors of<br />

military training. Through seeing the<br />

carefree attitude of the kids the camp<br />

also provided a spiritual outlet for 2Lt<br />

Gourd.<br />

More importantly, however, the kids<br />

benefited most from 2Lt Gourd's<br />

commitment and presence. During<br />

the open discussions around the<br />

campfire the campers were<br />

encouraged to express themselves<br />

and through 2Lt Gourd's guidance<br />

and inspiration, the kids became<br />

more self-confident and free-spirited.<br />

<strong>The</strong> experiences of both 2Lt<br />

Gourd<br />

and the children illustrate the<br />

importance of community involvement<br />

and the benefits seen by everyone.<br />

2Lt Gourd looks forward to<br />

counseling again at the camp next<br />

year and given how much fun he had,<br />

perhaps some other Phase IV<br />

candidates will join him.<br />
