England Central Area Semi-Finals<br />

Six of the best Midlands<br />

drama groups will be<br />

performing in Evesham on 9th<br />

<strong>May</strong>, each hoping to convince<br />

audiences & judges of the<br />

quality. of their work - and<br />

providing audiences with a<br />

wide range of great drama.<br />

This is the All-England<br />

Theatre Festival, which every<br />

year see dozens of theatrical<br />

groups from across the UK<br />

compete to perform the best<br />

one-act play - the best acting,<br />

production, presentation &<br />

dramatic achivement. This<br />

year the Central England semi-final will be held at Evesham<br />

Arts Centre, with the winning group & play going forward to<br />

the English national final in Harrogate.<br />

Evesham audiences can expect to see some high-quality<br />

drama of all kinds. The six shows performed in Evesham will<br />

already have overcome stiff opposition to win previous two<br />

stages of the competition - 9 preliminary heats from Hereford<br />

to Leicester and 3 quarter-finals in Nottingham, Ledbury &<br />

Burton-on-Trent. The contending shows range from witty<br />

comedies to serious issues, from original work to old<br />

favourities - and each last 40-45 minutes.<br />

The first two competitors to make it into these semi-finals<br />

are: "The Teacher?" performed by Birmingham-based<br />

Tomorrow Productions; and the Hereford Players with<br />

"Melody".<br />

"The Teacher?" is an original play by Michael Pickston in<br />

which a captured man is forced to consider his faith,<br />

performed by an company dedicated entirely to the<br />

production of new work. (Not suitable for children). "Melody"<br />

by Dublin-based Deirdre Kinahan is a funny & heartwarming<br />

piece about two middle age people who meet at lunchtime<br />

& end up sharing more than just sandwiches!<br />

The remaining four plays winning a place in Evesham have<br />

yet to be anounced. The contenders include groups from<br />

Stoke, Tamworth, Broseley, Wellington, Market Harborough,<br />

Nuneaton, Coventry & Leicester - and the dramas deal with<br />

job interviews, farcial singles nights, Chernobyl, a comedy<br />

duo...<br />

Six plays will be staged on Saturday 9th <strong>May</strong> in two sessions<br />

starting at 2pm and 7pm. Tickets for each session of three<br />

plays are £10, with a ticket to both sessions costing just £15<br />

The All-England Theatre Festival has a history dating back<br />

to 1919. Its annual competition now forms part of a UK-wide<br />

festival of amateur drama, encouraging & recognising<br />

excellence in performance & play-writing by a wide variety of<br />

groups & individuals.<br />

REVIEW<br />

Don Weller Quartet<br />

The Victory Club, Cheltenham|Fri 17th April<br />

The mighty Don Weller has been a major force on the British<br />

Jazz scene for many years. Now aged 74 and recovering from<br />

recent illness, we were treated to a more mellow and<br />

reflective Weller than perhaps we were accustomed to. His<br />

sound reminiscent of Ben Webster in places.<br />

The evening featured more ballads than usual, standouts<br />

being the Mal Waldron tune ‘Soul Eyes’ and ‘Hey There’, a<br />

song not often heard in a Jazz context.<br />

Don’s trademark humour was never far away, either with<br />

his dead-pan announcements or the sly way that he would<br />

approach a familiar melody.<br />

Weller clearly enjoyed being reunited with his old sparring<br />

partner David Newton at the piano with Newton even<br />

including a quotation from ‘Waltz for Debbie’ into his solo on<br />

‘Hey There’.<br />

The highlight of the evening was the tune that closed the<br />

second set, ‘The Way You Look Tonight’. Weller and Newton<br />

were well supported throughout by Will Harris on bass and<br />

Simon Radford, not only a driving force at the drums but also<br />

the force behind the volunteer at Cheltenham Jazz since 1984.<br />

Weller and Newton have a wonderful album available on Trio<br />

Recordings and David Newton himself will be at The<br />

Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham on June 8th with his own<br />

Trio. This is certainly a date for your Diary.<br />
